Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the oldest search engines, this site owes its name to the writing of Jonathan Swift

Answer: Yahoo!

The name Yahoo! comes from a race of people, created in "Gulliver's Travels", which is ruled by horse-like creatures known as Houyhnhnms in a reversal of the traditional role of humans and horses.

On a personal note, I opened up my first post college e-mail account on Yahoo! in 1997 and met my wife through the now defunct Yahoo! Personals.
2. This search engine is a misnamed word for a very large number

Answer: Google

A Googol is 10 raised to the 100th power (a one followed by 100 0's). Since its founding in the late 1990's, Google has become the most well known search engine to the extent that when someone decides to search for information on the internet they will say they are Googling it. Google has since expanded its services to include Google Maps and Gmail and has also purchased sites such as YouTube.
3. This is where I get my US political news

Answer: electoral-vote

Electoral-Vote was started in 2004 by an American computer science professor teaching in the Netherlands who wanted to encourage Americans living abroad to vote in the 2004 election. Early on it primarily focused on aggregating state by state polling data to show where the electoral college was likely to go at any given point in time.

By 2015 a UCLA history professor joined the staff and the column expanded to feature daily political commentary with a focus on promoting voting by as many eligible citizens as possible. On Saturdays they answer reader questions while Sundays are devoted to letters to the editor.

Its website gives the upcoming schedule with specific times for the next few weeks as well as matchups for each matchday for the rest of the season. It also has results, standings, news, and highlights from across the league.
5. This site has essentially replaced the print version of the encyclopedia

Answer: Wikipedia

Wikipedia started as an online encyclopedia in early 2001. It is free to use (although user donations are encouraged for frequent users) and most articles can be edited by anyone. This means that users can see updates shortly after things happen. For example, sports league standings are often updated within a few minutes after each game ends and current events can be frequently checked.

They have highlights going as far back as the 1908 London games. Full event replays start to become available with the 1988 Calgary winter games. For the more recent games, full event replays are available for all of the event finals and most of the preliminary rounds.
