Johns Hopkins had many of the surgeons who revolutionized modern surgery. Some of these were Dr. Kelly, Dr. Halstead, and Dr. Cooley.
Dr. Kelly was famous for his advances in gynecologic surgery. Dr. Halstead was famous for his development of techniques for hemostasis. Dr. Cooley was responsible for many of the techniques and instruments that we use in cardiovascular surgery today.

The Deaver is a large curved retractor used in belly surgeries.
