The team was formed for a three match tour of New Zealand. They lost two matches and drew the other. This first XI was only comprised of players from New South Wales and Queensland.

Despite forming in 1922, Australia's geographic isolation and the lack of fast air travel limited the opportunities to play against the best nations from Europe and South America. It took over 40 years for the Socceroos to have their first crack at qualifying for the biggest stage in world football.

After all other applicants from Africa and Asia pulled out, they lost against North Korea (the two remaining teams) over two matches and failed to qualify.
