Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1900, the Pittsburgh Pirates picked up a few good players from the defunct Louisville Colonels from the previous National League season. Which newly acquired player from the Colonels led the 1900 season in batting average, doubles, triples, slugging percentage, and total bases?

Answer: Honus Wagner

Wagner, along with others such as Fred Clarke, Chief Zimmer, and Deacon Phillippe, joined the Pirates in 1900. Phillippe won 20 games for the Pirates and Wagner batted .381. This franchise that had never won the NL pennant, finished second in 1900, then won the pennant in 1901, 1902, and 1903.
2. The 1901 season saw the new American League join forces with the National League to become what was known as Major League Baseball. How many American League teams were there in 1901?

Answer: 8

There were eight teams in both leagues in 1901. The new American League consisted of (in order of finish in 1901) the Chicago White Sox, Boston Americans, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators, Cleveland Blues, and Milwaukee Brewers.
3. The merge of both the National and American League did not happen peacefully, and in 1902 the National League filed suit to block the American League from forming a new American League team in a city which already housed a National League team. Which city was this that created the controversy?

Answer: Pittsburgh

The American League tried to expand to 12 teams in 1902, including a Pittsburgh AL team. John McGraw of the New York Giants was the biggest opponent of this, and through numerous meetings with lawyers, the expansion thought was abandoned. The Pirates won the NL pennant in 1902.
4. The first World Series between the American and National Leagues took place in 1903. There were three home runs hit in the series, with Pittsburgh's Jimmy Sebring going into the record books by hitting the first one during game one. Which Boston American hit the other two in the series during game two?

Answer: Patsy Dougherty

Dougherty was in his second season of baseball in 1903. Although the Pirates won game one, Patsy's two home runs in game two off Sam Leever and Bucky Veil would propel the Americans to win game two, then the series five games to three.
5. New York Giants manager John McGraw, a powerful National Leaguer was instrumental in getting other NL owners to boycott the World Series held in 1904. McGraw did not like the format, or the chance of facing the AL New York team in the series. Which two teams would have played in the second World Series in 1904, if one was held?

Answer: New York Giants vs Boston Americans

McGraw's biggest problem was that the New York Highlanders were battling for the American League crown all season. McGraw did not want to give the other New York team any chance of superiority against the Giants, therefore banded all the other NL owners together for issues that were fairly frivolous.

In 1904, the Highlanders (later Yankees) finished in second place, 1.5 games behind Boston.
6. Fans saw two pitching Triple Crowns thrown in 1905, one in each league. Christy Mathewson of the Giants threw one in the National League. Which other pitcher threw it in the American League?

Answer: Rube Waddell

Waddell was a Philadelphia Athletic in his 10th season of baseball. Rube went 27-10 with a 1.48 ERA. Mathewson of the Giants went 31-9 with 1.28 ERA. Both teams met each other in the World Series, with the Giants winning four games to one.
7. A pitching record was set in 1906 and survived for over 100 seasons. Which New York Giant pitcher struck out seven batters in a two-inning span?

Answer: Hooks Wiltse

In a game against the Cincinnati Reds, Wiltse struck out the side in the third inning, but an error by the catcher allowed one of the strikeout victims to reach first base safely. He then struck out the fourth batter. In the fourth inning, he once again struck out the side. The Giants won the game 4-1, with Hooks striking out 12 Reds.
8. In 1907, which American League slugger led the league for the fourth straight season in home runs?

Answer: Harry Davis

Davis was a Philadelphia Athletic, and led the AL in home runs from 1904-1907. He hit 10, 8, 12, and 8, respectively.
9. The 1908 season saw a pitcher win 40 games in a season, the last 40-game winner of the 20th century, and possibly in baseball. Who was this White Sox pitcher?

Answer: Ed Walsh

There were only two 40-game winners in the 20th century. Jack Chesbro of the New York Highlanders (later Yankees) went 41-12 in 1904, then Walsh of the White Sox going 40-15 in 1908. The White Sox would still finish the season in third place. The only other pitcher that came close to the 40-win mark was New York Giant Christy Mathewson in 1908 with his 37-11 record.

These three pitchers would later be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
10. This player in May 1909 stole second, third, and home, all with the same batter standing at the plate in the same at-bat. He would do this again the following day. Who is this Hall of Famer?

Answer: Honus Wagner

Although Cobb of the Tigers batted for the second American League Triple Crown (Lajoie 1901) and was a base-stealing wonder, it was Pittsburgh Pirate Honus Wagner who pulled off the streaking feat. Honus did it three times during his career. Cobb would never duplicate the event. Cobb retired with 897 stolen bases, while Wagner stole 723. Ironically, both teams met each other in the 1909 World Series, with the Pirates winning four games to three.
