Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who were the Southeast Division champions of the Eastern Conference?

Answer: Washington Capitals

Pittsburgh was the winner of the Atlantic Division and Montreal was the winner of the Northeast Division. The Minnesota Wild are a member of the Western Conference winning the Northwest Division.
2. Who did the Penguins meet in the first round of the playoffs?

Answer: Ottawa Senators

The Penguins finished second overall in the Eastern Conference final so that meant they would be playing the seventh place team. This team was the Ottawa Senators. The team that finished first in this conference (Montreal Canadiens) played the eighth place team. The team that finished third played the fourth place team. The fourth and fifth place teams played each other.
Pittsburgh swept the Ottawa Senators which was no surprise.
3. In the Western Conference quarterfinals, the top two teams won their series.

Answer: True

Both Detroit and San Jose won their quarterfinal match-ups. Neither was easy. Detroit won 4-2 over the Nashville Predators. San Jose defeated the Calgary Flames in game 7 to win their series.
4. What was the name of the team who left in the first round during the 2008 series, after winning the Stanley Cup in the 2007 series?

Answer: Anaheim Ducks

Anaheim totally dominated the series in 2007 beating the first place Detroit Red Wings in the Conference Finals. Detroit beat both the Calgary Flames and the San Jose Sharks to meet the Anaheim Ducks in the Conference Finals.
5. What goalie started the 2008 playoffs only to be replaced in the first round, and never to reappear in the series?

Answer: Dominik Hasek

Dominik Hasek also known as the Dominator. Dominik retired of the end of the 2008 series as the second oldest player in hockey at 43 after Chris Chelios, who is 46. Chris Osgood took over Dom's job and helped the Red Wings play their best.
6. The top 10 skaters (based on points) consisted of members from 4 teams. Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia are the first three. Which was the last team?

Answer: Dallas Stars

It isn't surprising to see the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh having the top point getters in the league. Mike Ribeiro of the Dallas Stars had a 7th place finish with 17 points.
7. The Toronto Maple Leafs made it to the playoffs in 2008.

Answer: False

They did not make the playoffs. There were too many other teams who were far more consistent. The Eastern Conference always had the closest races for the playoffs. Toronto normally did better than 12 out of 15 teams. They only collected 83 points during the 2007-08 season. 22 teams out of 30 finished above them.
8. In one of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals (Montreal vs. Boston), a young goaltender from Montreal had two shutouts. What was his name?

Answer: Carey Price

Carey Price only had only 41 NHL games under his belt. Montreal's other goalie was Jaroslav Halak who played 23 games. Neither had NHL playoff experience. Carey had a shutout in game 4 (winning 1-0) and in game 7 (winning 5-0). Bernie Parent was a great goalie for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1970s, and Ken Dryden was possibly the best goalie ever for the Montreal Canadiens.
9. Name the two teams in the Eastern Conference Final.

Answer: Pittsburgh and Philadelphia

It was Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference Final. It was the battle of Pennsylvania. Montreal had played Philadelphia in the semi-finals. Detroit and Pittsburgh played in the finals. Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers played against each other in the semi-finals.
10. Which team was victorious in game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals?

Answer: Detroit Red Wings

It was the Detroit Red Wings who finally won the Cup on the road. The Pittsburgh Penguins amazed a nation with their young talent, but could not shake the rock solid Red Wings who also won the President's Trophy. That trophy is for the team who finishes first in the league during regular play.
