Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who won the Stanley Cup?

Answer: New Jersey Devils

The Devils beat the Ducks in seven games. During the finals, the home team won every game. The Ducks beat the Wild in the Western Conference Finals in four games, while the Devils beat the Senators in the Eastern Conference finals in seven games.
2. Who won the Conn Smythe trophy, as the playoff MVP?

Answer: Jean-Sebastien Giguere

Giguere won, despite being on the losing team. Brodeur certainly would have been worthy, recording three shutouts in the finals and seven overall. Giguere did however post better stats in the playoffs (winning percentage, GAA, save percentage), for whatever that is worth. Giguere was also undefeated in overtime.
3. In the first round, which team was eliminated by the Philadelphia Flyers?

Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs

Fourth-seeded Philadelphia beat the fifth-seeded Leafs in seven games, first-seeded Ottawa beat the eighth-seeded Islanders in five games, third-seeded Tampa Bay beat sixth-seeded Washington in six games and second-seeded New Jersey beat seventh-seeded Boston in five games, all in the Eastern Conference.
4. Who scored Anaheim's overtime goal in game 4 vs. Detroit?

Answer: Steve Rucchin

Rucchin's goal completed the improbable sweep of defending champion Detroit. Anaheim was the seventh seed, while Detroit was the second.
5. Once the playoffs had progressed to the conference finals, only one of the top 24 highest paid players of the 2002-2003 season still remained. Who was it?

Answer: paul kariya

Anaheim's Kariya was the NHL's fourth highest paid player with a salary of $10 million. The next closest were Martin Brodeur and Scott Stevens of the Devils, tied at 25th, both making $6,891,103.
6. The Minnesota Wild accomplished a remarkable feat in the first two rounds of the playoffs. What was it?

Answer: They came back twice from a 3-1 series deficit

Minnesota beat both Colorado and Vancouver in seven games each, despite being down 3-1 at one point in each series. Since Minnesota was the lower seed in each case, they had to win both game 7's on the road. Anaheim was the team that eliminated the first and second seeds (Dallas and Detroit) in the first two rounds.
7. Who tied with Jamie Langenbrunner for the most points in the playoffs, with 18?

Answer: Scott Niedermayer

Scott Niedermayer picked up 2 goals and 16 assists. Gaborik of the Wild was third with 17 points and Madden and Hossa tied for fourth with 16 points.
8. How many goals did the Minnesota Wild score on Anaheim's Jean-Sebastien Giguere in the Western Conference finals?

Answer: 1

The Wild's only goal, in a game 4 2-1 loss, was by Andrew Brunette. Giguere shut out the Wild, who had been offensively potent in the two previous rounds, in the first three games.
9. Which team made the playoffs in 2003 but not in 2002?

Answer: Dallas Stars

The Stars were the top seed in the West, a huge improvement over their disappointing 2001-2002 season. Toronto was the East's second seed in 2002 and the fifth seed in 2003. Boston was first in 2002 but seventh in 2003. Vancouver was eighth in 2002 and fourth in 2003.
10. Who scored the playoffs' first hat trick?

Answer: Alexander Mogilny

Mogilny picked up a hat trick in game one of Toronto's first round matchup against Philadelphia.
11. Which team did Vancouver beat in the first round?

Answer: St. Louis Blues

Vancouver beat St. Louis in game seven after being down 3-1 in the series. In the next round, they lost in game seven after being up 3-1 against the Wild.
12. How many first round matchups went to a seventh game?

Answer: 3

Toronto vs. Philadelphia, Colorado vs. Minnesota and Vancouver vs. St. Louis were all decided on April 22, 2003 in the crucial seventh game.
13. Of all the teams making the 2003 playoffs, which had the fewest regular season points?

Answer: New York Islanders

The Islanders finished the 2002-2003 regular season with 83 points. Edmonton had 92, Anaheim had 95 and Boston had 87.
14. Which team that did not make the 2003 playoffs had the most regular season points?

Answer: Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks beat Detroit on the last day of the regular season, giving the Blackhawks 79 points and preventing the Red Wings from taking the top spot in the Western Conference. The Rangers had 78 points, tied with Los Angeles and Phoenix, while Montreal had 77.
15. Which of these Maple Leafs stars did not miss at least one game of the first round due to injury?

Answer: Mats Sundin

Mogilny was hit in the face by Jeremy Roenick's flailing stick in overtime in game 3. Antropov broke his foot in game 1, but came back for games 6 and 7. Gilmour did not even play in the playoffs, having been injured almost immediately after being acquired from Montreal at the trade deadline. Sundin appeared in all 7 games.
16. Which is the only team that had two goaltenders each play in four games or more in the playoffs?

Answer: Minnesota Wild

Manny Fernandez played in 9 games and Dwayne Roloson played in 11 for the Wild. Jeff Hacket played in 3 and Steve Shields played in 2 for the Bruins, while Dan Cloutier played for all but a few minutes for Vancouver and Garth Snow played all five games for the Islanders.
17. Who scored Ottawa's overtime goal in game six of the Eastern Conference finals, sending the series to a game seven?

Answer: Chris Phillips

Phillips snuck in from the point to put a loose puck behind the Devil's Brodeur at 15:51 of the first overtime, after Vrada had unsuccessfully pounded at it a few times. Hossa set up the goal by putting the puck on net and Bonk scored earlier in the game.
18. Which of these playoff records was broken in 2003?

Answer: Most shutouts recorded by a goaltender

Brodeur picked up seven shutouts, three in the finals, beating Dominik Hasek's record of six set in 2002. No one was even close to Patrick Roy's 10 overtime wins from 1993. The Ducks-Stars 5-OT opener was one of the longest games ever, but not the longest. Scott Stevens tied Roy's record for most game seven appearences with 13.
19. Who could be seen on the Devils' bench in game seven of the Stanley Cup finals with a blue and yellow eye and a huge gash on his cheek?

Answer: John Madden

Madden took a skate to the face in game six, received stitches and kept playing. By game seven, his eye showed a horrible bruise but he nonetheless played.
20. Who, despite his age, led all players in faceoff percentage in the 2003 playoffs?

Answer: Adam Oates

Oates, age 40, won 60 percent of his draws, including the one that set up Ruslan Salei for the game winner in overtime in game three.
