Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a very tightly contested series of matches, Spain emerged the new champion from this extraordinarily popular event. However, on the road to world champions, Spain lost a match. To which team did Spain lose their only game of the tournament?

Answer: Switzerland

In their very first match of the tournament, Spain suffered a loss to a very determined and talented team from Switzerland. Despite this early and unexpected defeat, Spain persevered and continued through the rounds, to claim the world championship for their very first time.
2. Even though this team did not advance to the round of 16, they hold the distinction of not having posted a single loss. Ironically, every other team in the tournament posted at least one loss. Can you identify this team?

Answer: New Zealand

Paraguay and Brazil did not lose until the quarterfinal stage. Australia lost to Germany in the group stage. Interestingly enough, New Zealand did not lose a single game. However, they did not win any games, either (they drew all three of their group matches). Hence, they didn't quite make it to the knockout stage.
3. In a tribute to the staunch defensive skill of Spain, they won the championship by conceding only 2 goals for the entire finals tournament. On the other hand, which team scored the most number of goals during the tournament?

Answer: Germany

Germany exhibited great scoring prowess by scoring 16 goals for the tournament. The Netherlands garnered 12 goals. Argentina gained 10 goals, and Brazil managed 9 goals. It's an interesting statistic, since Spain only scored 8 goals.
4. FIFA team rankings have been the subject of some discussion and debate. Considering the entering rankings of the teams and the final results, did rankings hold for the tournament (specifically, consider the rankings of the final four teams)? In other words, did the final four teams finish in the order in which they were ranked by FIFA?

Answer: Yes

In fact, the rankings did hold. Spain, Netherlands, and Germany took the top three spots. Their initial rankings were second, fourth and sixth, respectively. Uruguay, the other semi-finalist, was ranked 16th.
5. Only one player in the tournament managed to score a hat-trick. Which team is he from?

Answer: Argentina

Gonzalo Higuain from Argentina scored the single hat-trick, that is, three goals scored in a match during the tournament. Higuain scored his three goals against South Korea.
6. In the quarterfinals, eight teams remained. In the four matches, two teams failed to score. On the other hand, which teams scored a goal but failed to advance?

Answer: Brazil and Ghana

In the quarterfinals, a total of ten goals were scored. Germany scored four of those goals. Brazil and Ghana were the only losing teams in the quarterfinals to score goals but fail to advance. Brazil entered the tournament ranked number one but lost valiantly to a determined team from the Netherlands.
7. In each tournament, records are bound to be made and broken. As the new champions, Spain has two singular records. One of them is the lowest average of goals scored. What was their approximate number of goals scored by Spain per game?

Answer: 1

The other record happens to be the lowest number of goals scored in total by a champion team. Its a surprising statistic considering the precision passing, possession, and attacking technique by such a team. Nevertheless, Spain only scored 1.14 goals per game. During group play, the overall average was 2.104 goals per game. The final average was 2.270 goals per game.
8. In the final, the championship match, which player managed to find the goal for Spain and scored in the 119th minute?

Answer: Iniesta

Among the gala of stars that Spain is proud to possess, Andres Iniesta may not be the first name to be mentioned. However, he is now a national hero due to his phenomenal goal against the Netherlands.
9. Performing as a referee in this contest is one of the most demanding tasks for any official. Who was the referee for the championship match?

Answer: Howard Webb

Howard Webb of England has a prestigious career as an official. He did set a record though, for the most cautions (yellow cards) issued in a finals match. There were 14 yellow cards issued to both teams, and the Netherlands received the bulk of those cards.
10. The 2010 World Cup deserves a mention of the prognosticating octopus named Paul. How many matches did Paul correctly predict in this tournament (he predicted all of Germany's matches plus the final)?

Answer: 8

Paul, the celebrated octopus who resides in Germany, happened to correctly select all of Germany's matches as well as the final. The probability of doing so is only 0.39%.
