Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Only two teams managed to go through the group stage with a perfect three wins. One of the two teams was Argentina, ranked seventh in the world at the time. Can you supply the name of the only other team able to gain a perfect score within their group?

Answer: Netherlands

Even though the mighty Brazilian team was ranked number one going into the group stage, they could only muster seven points due to a hard fought match with Portugal which ended in a draw. The Netherlands, ranked fourth in the world, scored nine points in its group.
2. This secretive team had the dubious distinction of having to play in the "group of death". The team finished in the ignominious last position of their group without a win or a draw. Can you name this Asian team?

Answer: North Korea

Even though North Korea, otherwise known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, played a credible game against Brazil, they lost by the narrowest of margins by 2-1. However, fortune failed to favor North Korea as they lost to Portugal by seven points, without scoring a single point. North Korea proceeded to succumb to an aggressive offense posted by the Ivory Coast.
3. Interestingly enough, FIFA world rankings held for the most part with one great exception. In group F, the 2006 world champion could only manage two points in its group. Which team is this?

Answer: Italy

This powerhouse of a team could only scrape together two draws and a loss in their group. Their single loss came at the hands of a surprising team from Slovakia. In this group, the 78th ranked New Zealand surprised many spectators by scoring three draws in the group.
4. Displaying extraordinary defense, only two teams did not allow a single goal during the group stage. One of the teams was Uruguay. The other team allowing zero goals also held the highest goal differential. Which team was this, who is a neighbor to Spain?

Answer: Portugal

Even though Portugal scored a prodigious seven points against North Korea, they could not muster their offense enough to score points against the Ivory Coast or Brazil. That being said, they also did not allow any goals to be scored against their stolid defense.
5. This extremely strong European team playing in group D had won the World Cup three times. Can you identify this team from the land of poets and thinkers?

Answer: Germany

Germany entered the 2010 World Cup ranked sixth in the world. Germany's single loss to Serbia prevented a clean sweep of the group.
6. This team in group B demonstrated its ability to accomplish upsets, at least with respect to FIFA world rankings. This team entered the tournament ranked 47th, but achieved second place in their group. This team was one of the hosts of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Which country is this team from?

Answer: South Korea

The 2002 World Cup was hosted by two Asian countries, one of which was Japan and the other being South Korea. The Republic of Korea started with an impressive victory over Greece. They faltered somewhat against a very powerful Argentinian team. The victory by Greece over Nigeria helped South Korea advance to the knockout stage.
7. Which of the following countries, with the largest population in the world, did not qualify for the 2010 World Cup?

Answer: China

Even though China won the East Asia Football Championship in 2010, they failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. It still remains a vigorously watched sport for the Chinese populace.
8. Group C of the 2010 World Cup was closely observed. It was a tightly contested competition complete with controversy. Which team ended up on top of the group?

Answer: USA

Group C might have been the most tightly packed group with respect to FIFA world rankings. England boasts one of the strongest and highly respected football leagues in the world. England entered the group ranked number eight in the world. Many pundits will avow that Robert Green's "fumble" allowed the USA to tie England in the very first match. Even so, both teams played solid subsequent matches to gain the top two positions in the group.
9. There happened to be a great deal of controversy and unpleasantness associated with this team in group A. Even though this team won the World Cup title in 1998, they finished an ignominious fourth place (last) in their group in 2010. Which team is this?

Answer: France

Former World Cup champions and still a team that possesses a great deal of talent, France apparently had to struggle with inner turmoil. They failed to win a single game and only managed a draw with Uruguay to score a single point.
10. Only one of the African teams were able to advance out of the group stage to the elimination round. Which team was it?

Answer: Ghana

South Africa failed to advance in group A due to goal difference. Unfortunately, Cameroon, a very strong team, ended up at the bottom of their group. Nigeria also came in fourth place. Ghana was able to advance due to their goal differential over Australia.
