Things went bad to worse after Ralph Hasenhüttl was sacked, only to be replaced by Nathan Jones, and they finished on a miserable 25 points. Things were closer between Leeds United, Leicester City and Everton, with a 4-1 loss to Tottenham sending Leeds down on the final day.

The final day of the season was a tense one for Leicester and Everton. Leicester thought they were safe when they took the lead against West Ham, only to have their hopes of survival dashed when Abdoulaye Doucouré scored for Everton, putting them in the clear by two points. Leicester, much to the despair of Gary Lineker, were the third team to go down.

Blackpool and Huddersfield Town were in the Championship; Huddersfield finished 18th, while Blackpool dropped down into League One after finishing second from bottom. Ipswich Town, Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday were all in League One, with Ipswich being automatically promoted (finished in second place), and Wednesday being the third team to go up after winning the playoffs.
