Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which book does Perrin meet Faile for the first time?

Answer: The Dragon Reborn

While Perrin, Loial, Lan Mandrogan and Moiraine Damodred are following Rand, they stay at an inn in the Altaran village of Remen, where Faile is also staying. She is a Hunter of the Horn and the two Hunters she met are recovering from a fight with some Aiel (one of whom is Gaul). When Perrin's party take the boat to Illian, Faile joins them, as she finds their party of an Ogier, an Aes Sedai and her Warder, and a Two Rivers blacksmith interesting and hopes they might lead her to the Horn of Valere. She hates her real name of Zarine and considers calling herself Mandarb, until Perrin tells her it is the name of Lan's black stallion. She opts for her childhood nickname of Faile, or falcon, instead. Min had had a vision of Perrin with a falcon on one shoulder, and Perrin wonders if Faile is the falcon.

Faile becomes a permanent member of the party in Illian, when Perrin accidentally reveals that Rand al'Thor is the Dragon Reborn. Moiraine warns Faile that she is sealed to them now and cannot leave.
2. Which ter'angreal is used to set a trap for Moiraine in an inn, but ends up trapping Faile in Tel'aran'rhiod instead?

Answer: A little wooden hedgehog

When the party are in Tear, Lan and Moiraine decide to send Faile, Loial and Perrin back to Tar Valon for their safety, and Faile goes upstairs to look for Loial. Perrin hears the sound of someone falling to the floor and rushes to the private dining room, to find Faile unconscious on the floor. Moiraine warns him not to go in the room, because she has sensed Spirit flows and realised that someone has set a trap using a ter'angreal shaped like a little wooden hedgehog, which she notices by Faile's hand. Moiraine realises the trap was set for her and on questioning the innkeeper, she learns that two Black Ajah sisters brought the ter'angreal, claiming it was a gift, on behalf of the Forsaken Be'lal.

Faile is mentally trapped in Tel'aran'rhiod and as Perrin is a Dreamer, he goes into the Wolf Dream to rescue her while Loial keeps watch. With Hopper's help, Perrin enters the Stone of Tear and searches for Faile. He finds her chained to block, but she disappears. He then enters a room where a falcon is chained to a perch with a lock shaped like a hedgehog, and is attacked by a flock of falcons. Perrin breaks the falcon's chain and wakes up to find that Faile is awake and freed.
3. When Perrin hears that Whitecloaks are after his family, he travels back to Two Rivers with Loial, Faile and a group of Aiel. Which Aiel is not part of the party?

Answer: Aviendha

Perrin does not want Faile to come to Two Rivers with him, but she manipulates Loial into letting her come along. Perrin is accompanied by Loial and Gaul, while Bain and Chiad go with Faile. There is tension between the parties, not just because of Perrin and Faile, but also because Chiad is from the Goshien clan, who have a blood feud with Gaul's clan, the Shaarad. When they arrive in Two Rivers, Perrin receives devastating news from the Al'Veres: his entire family (save for one young distant cousin) have been massacred by Trollocs, on the orders of Padan Fain. Fain had been targeting Emond's Field in the hope of luring Rand back. Perrin tries to be stoic, but Faile encourages him to grieve and comforts him when he breaks down in tears.

Perrin organises the defence of Two Rivers, with the help of the Aiel, Loial and two Aes Sedai, Verin Mathwin and Alanna Mosvani (who have come to Two Rivers to search for more potential novices). While the Aiel and Loial stay behind for the final confrontation with the Trollocs, he sends Faile away for her own safety, with Bain to accompany her, after marrying her. However, Faile only rides as far as Watch Hill, and returns with reinforcements; as she points out to Perrin, she promised she would go, but she did not say how far she would go. After the Trollocs are defeated, the Whitecloaks try to arrest Perrin, but Perrin refuses to go with them as they did nothing to aid the Two Rivers people, and sends them packing. He and Faile ride back to the Winespring Inn as the people cheer him.
4. When Faile and Perrin are in Cairhien, Perrin finds out that Rand al'Thor has been captured by the White Tower Aes Sedai and goes to rescue him, while Faile stays behind. To which Cairhenin noble does she offer her services as a lady-in-waiting?

Answer: Colavaere Saighan

Colavaere is a Cairhenin noblewoman who murders her rivals, Lord Maringil and High Lord Meilan Mendiana, in order to claim the Sun Throne of Cairhien. Berelain sur Paendrag Paeron, the First of Mayene and Faile's love rival, has been appointed steward of Cairhien by Rand and discovers Colavaere's plot, and warns Perrin. When Colavaere becomes Queen of Cairhien, she demotes Berelain to the position of lady-in-waiting and also takes Faile on; she enjoys playing the two women off against each other, knowing that Faile is jealous. Faile also discovers evidence of Colavaere's plot and confronts her with it when Rand returns to Cairhien after the Battle of Dumai's Wells. Perrin and Faile are reunited, though they also have a massive argument.

As punishment for her treachery, Rand orders that Colavaere be stripped of her assets and exiled to a farm. Colavaere later hangs herself in shame.
5. Alliandre Maritha Kigarin swears fealty to Perrin when he is sent on a mission to her country by Rand al'Thor, in response to a letter she sent. Of which country is Alliandre the queen?

Answer: Ghealdan

Ghealdan is a small country to the north of Amadicia, and is ruled by Queen Alliandre Maritha Kigarin, who came to the throne after her predecessor married a commoner. The Crown High Council, the Ghealdanin government, allow her to stay on the throne because she is better at handling Masema Dagar than her predecessors. Because of the presence of Masema and the Dragonsworn in her country, as well as the Whitecloaks, she sends a letter to Rand saying that she supports him as the Dragon Reborn, but is limited in what she can do. Rand sends Perrin to Ghealdan to meet Alliandre, after pretending to fall out with him, and she swears fealty to him and Rand, although the Crown High Council do not know this.

Other notable Ghealdanins in 'The Wheel of Time' include false Dragon turned Asha'man Logain Ablar; Black Ajah sister Chesmal Emry; and Noam, a Wolfbrother who becomes the wolf Boundless in the Wolf Dream.
6. Who does Perrin employ as his secretary and spymaster during the hunt for Faile?

Answer: Sebban Balwer

Sebban Balwer was originally the secretary and (secret) spymaster to Pedron Niall, the former Captain Commander of the Whitecloaks. Eamon Valda has Niall murdered and replaces him as Captain Commander, and gives Balwer the sack. He helps Morgase and her entourage escape from Amadicia by getting a wine merchant's pass.

The party run into Dragonsworn and are attacked, but are saved by Perrin's group, and Balwer offers his services to Perrin in return. He proves to be essential in gathering information about the Seanchan and Whitecloaks, and overseeing the Cha Faile, a group of Cairhenin assassins following Faile.

He also warns Perrin of Masema's corrupting influence on Aram, who has become increasingly unstable.
7. Which Aiel clan, led by Sevanna, capture Faile, Alliandre, Maighdin and various others, and take them as gai'shain?

Answer: Shaido

The Shaido Aiel are largely despised by the other Aiel clans due to their lack of honour and habit of stealing and raiding. One of ther number, Couladin, had tried to proclaim himself the Car'a'carn and lied about going to Rhuidean, but was exposed as a liar when Rand al'Thor told the gathered clans what he saw in the city. He is later killed by Mat Cauthon. The Shaido are led by Sevanna, the widow of the chief Suladric, though the real power behind the throne is the Wise One Therava.

Aiel are forbidden to take non-Aiel as gai'shain, but the Shaido break this rule and Therava tells the captives that they will serve indefinitely, rather than the usual year and a day. Sevanna takes Faile, Alliandre and Maighdin (actually the former Andoran Queen Morgase in disguise) as her personal gai'shain. Faile tries to escape, but is caught by Sevanna, tied up and left on display. Several gai'shain swear fealty to Faile and she promises to help them escape if she can. Galina Casban, a Black Ajah sister and Therava's sex slave, goes with the party but betrays them by leaving them to die in a collapsing building. Morgase uses what little channelling she knows to signal for help by waving a scarf, and a group of Shaido Aiel dig the escapees out. One of them, Rolan - who had been coming on to Faile while she was in captivity - sees Perrin coming for Faile and tries to attack him, but Perrin kills him with his hammer.
8. Masema Dagar, a Shienaran cult leader known as the Prophet of the Dragon, believes that Perrin is a Darkfriend and sends the former Tinker Aram to kill him by convincing him of the same. Who kills Masema in 'The Gathering Storm', Faile or Perrin?

Answer: Faile

Like the Whitecloaks, Masema believes that Perrin and his mentor Elyas are Darkfriends because of their gold eyes, a trait of a Wolfbrother, and conveniently ignores the fact that Perrin is a close friend of the very man he claims to worship. Aram, a radicalised former Tinker, tries to kill Perrin in the belief that he is protecting Faile, but is shot dead by a Shaido archer. Many of Masema's army are killed in the Battle of Malden, but Masema and a few survivors escape. He plans to go after Perrin again, but Faile, the Cha Faile and a group of Two Rivers archers ambush the Dragonsworn and Faile stabs Masema. She purposely does it to save Perrin from having to do it himself.

Masema has, unknown to Perrin, been collaborating with the Seanchan High Lady Suroth, who is a Darkfriend and in the pay of the Forsaken Semirhage. She had previously collaborated with Liandrin Guirale of the Black Ajah, who sold Egwene al'Vere to her as a damane, and is plotting to assassinate the Seanchan Empress Tuon and take her place, until she is exposed.
9. Which Forsaken tries to Compel Perrin during the Last Battle, only for him to remember his love for Faile and break free of her control?

Answer: Lanfear

While Perrin does fight Graendal (or Hessalam, as she is now known) in the Wolf Dream during the Last Battle, Lanfear - who has also been reincarnated with the new name of Cyndane - is the one who puts him under Compulsion, after following him around Tel'aran'rhiod and trying to gain his trust.

She plans to use Perrin to steal Callandor from Rand, and make him kill Moiraine while she kills Nynaeve, so she can rescue the Dark One and earn his favour. Perrin's love for Faile overcomes his brainwashing, as he realises that killing Moiraine will put Faile in danger.

He breaks Lanfear's neck while crying over her body, although - as Brandon Sanderson revealed in 2022 - she faked her death and was one of the few Forsaken to survive the Last Battle.
10. Does Faile become the queen of Saldaea in 'A Memory of Light'?

Answer: Yes

Tenobia, Faile's cousin is the queen of Saldaea, but is ambushed and killed by Trollocs in the Last Battle. Davram Bashere, who is one of the five Great Captains, is next in line to the throne; however, he refuses to take the crown of Saldaea until the battle is over. He is demoted from his position by Elayne Trakand due to being put under Compulsion by Hessalam and forced to become a sleeper agent, and fights as a common soldier instead. Both he and his wife Deira are killed in battle, leaving Faile as next in line to the throne of Saldaea.

Faile finally gets her hands on the Horn of Valere (though not in the circumstances she originally imagined!) when she delivers it to Olver, who sounds it when surrounded by Trollocs and summons the Heroes of the Horn to change the tide of battle. Perrin searches for Faile in the Wolf Dream, not knowing if she is alive or dead, and sees a small injured falcon; when he returns to the real world, he finds her alive, but badly injured and lying under a dead Trolloc. He takes her to the Fields of Merrilor to be healed.
