Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What driver of the #48 Chevrolet car was the fastest in qualifying and thus achieved pole position for the 2023 Daytona 500?

Answer: Alex Bowman

Alex Bowman was born in 1993 in Tucson, AZ and in 2012 he competed in his first NASCAR event. Bowman had the fastest times in both round 1 and round 2 of qualifying. In round 2 he posted a time of 49.536 and a speed of 181.686 mph (292.395 km/h). Bowman actually set a record in 2023 for having a sixth consecutive front row start at the Daytona 500.
2. Outside of the first two and final two positions, the other starting positions for the 2023 Daytona 500 were determined by the result of the Bluegreen Vacations Duels. Which Ford drivers won these duels and started in third and fourth position?

Answer: Joey Logano and Aric Almirola

The duels were held three days before and at the same track as the 2023 Daytona 500. The two duels were contested over 60 laps at a distance of 150 mi (240 km). The first duel was won by Joey Logano and the second was won by Aric Almirola. Interestingly, both Logano and Almirola were also in the top five of qualifying times being less than 0.30 seconds off of the polesitter, Alex Bowman.
3. The 2023 Daytona 500 consisted of three stages. What Ford driver of the #6 car was the leader after the first stage for which he won 10 points?

Answer: Brad Keselowski

The first two stages of the 2023 Daytona 500 consisted of 65 laps while the last stage was 70 laps. At the end of stage one, Brad Keselowski was in the lead and he was followed by four other Ford drivers. The stage one and two finishers in positions 2-10 also received points in descending amounts.

Brad Keselowski was born in Rochester Hills, MI in 1984 and he began his NASCAR career in 2004. In addition to winning the first stage, Keselowski was also the fastest in the final practice session with a time of 47.071 seconds and a speed of 191.201 mph (307.708 km/h).
4. What seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, who had retired after the 2020 season, came back to compete in the 2023 Daytona 500 and finished 31st?

Answer: Jimmie Johnson

Jimmie Johnson was born in El Cajon, CA in 1975 and he won the NASCAR Cup Series in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013 and in 2016. Johnson was the driver of the #48 car for most of his NASCAR career that began in 2001. From 2002 to 2017 Johnson won 83 races, had 374 top tens and was polesitter 36 times.

Jimmie Johnson came out of retirement for the 2023 Daytona 500 and he drove the #84 car. He started 39th but he was in the top 20 for much of the race. Unfortunately, Johnson was involved in a crash near the end of the race and he finished 31st.
5. Interestingly, none of the top ten drivers at the end of stage one were in the top ten at the end of stage two. What driver of the #1 Chevrolet car was leading after stage two?

Answer: Ross Chastain

Ross Chastain was born in Alva, FL in 1992 and he began his NASCAR Cup Series career in 2017. Incredibly, Chastain won stage two of the 2023 Daytona 500 over his fellow Chevrolet driver Alex Bowman by the miniscule margin of 0.015 seconds.
6. The first major incident of the 2023 Daytona 500 came on lap 118 when Kevin Harvick bumped a car in front of him. What driver of the #45 car did Harvick bump, causing him to lose control?

Answer: Tyler Reddick

Tyler Reddick spun out when he was bumped by Harvick and an eight car accident ensued. In addition to Reddick, Chase Elliott and Erik Jones were also knocked out of the race on lap 118.
7. On lap 182 an accident prompted another caution. What Stewart-Haas Racing teammate and driver of the #41 car crashed alongside Chase Briscoe?

Answer: Ryan Preece

Both Ryan Preece and Chase Briscoe led the 2023 Daytona 500 for at least four laps but their race ended on lap 182 after an accident. The accident on lap 182 brought about the third caution due to an accident and unfortunately there would be several more incidents before the race ended.
8. What driver of the #47 car was declared the winner of the 2023 Daytona 500 as he was leading on the 212th lap when a caution was declared?

Answer: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

The 2023 Daytona 500 had an odd finish in that Ricky Stenhouse Jr. did not actually cross the finish line. Instead, the race had to go into two overtimes as there were accidents on the final laps. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. pulled slightly ahead of Joey Logano during the second overtime and a crash behind them caused the race to be called at that point before they could reach the finish line.

The 2023 Daytona 500 was Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s first win since 2017.
9. Although he didn't finish the race due to an accident on the final lap, which driver led the most laps (42) of the 2023 Daytona 500?

Answer: Brad Keselowski

Brad Keselowski drove the #6 Ford car and he led 42 laps of the 2023 Daytona 500. Keselowski gained 10 points for leading after stage one and at six different times he was the leader of the race. In total there were 52 lead changes among 21 drivers in the race.
10. With a total of 212 laps, the 2023 Daytona 500 set a record for the longest Daytona 500.

Answer: True

Under normal circumstances, the Daytona 500 is 200 laps and a distance of 500 mi (800 km). However, the 2023 Daytona 500 was 6% longer than that with 212 laps and a distance of 530 mi (848 km). The added distance was primarily due to the multiple cautions that came about in the race's final laps.
