"The King" Richard Petty won the Daytona 500 in 1964, 1966, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1979, and 1981.

Allison had gone 67 races without a win and wrecked during qualifying which put him in the back of the pack. This left him and his crew chief, Bud Moore, wondering about their chances. Instead, they celebrated a win out-running Cale Yarborough by 33 seconds.
