Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For the 2006-07 season, basketball star Kobe Bryant changed his Los Angeles Lakers number from 8 to 24. What was his stated reason for choosing 24?

Answer: His first number in high school had been 24

Bryant's high school numbers had been 24 and 33. When he joined the Lakers in 1996, 24 was unavailable and 33 had been retired in honor of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Bryant chose 8 as this was the sum of the digits 143, the number he had worn at Adidas ABCD camp.
2. Which of these sports takes place on an area that is square with each side measuring 24 feet?

Answer: Boxing

The first set of rules to stipulate dimensions for a boxing ring was the London Prize Ring Rules of 1838. These required that "the ring shall be made on turf, and shall be four-and-twenty feet square, formed of eight stakes and ropes, the latter extending in double lines, the uppermost line being four feet from the ground, the lower two feet from the ground."

These measurements were then incorporated into the better known Marquess of Queensberry Rules of 1867.
3. In NASCAR racing, the 24 car has become synonymous with just one driver. Who is this driver that has achieved considerable success?

Answer: Jeff Gordon

Gordon's first NASCAR start was in the final race of 1992. The following year he was Rookie of the Year, and in 1995 won his first Winston Cup at the age of 24.

Earnhardt, Burton, and Johnson are most associated with the 3, 31, and 48 cars respectively.
4. The USPGA Players Championship is often dubbed the fifth golf major. Australian Greg Norman once won this tournament with a staggering aggregate score that was 24 shots under par. In which year did he achieve this feat?

Answer: 1994

Norman had rounds of 63, 67, 67, 67 for an aggregate of 264. To underline the magnitude of this achievement, up until 2009, the next best winning score at the Players Championship or Majors was "just" 19 under, achieved by Jack Nicklaus (1976 Players Championship), and also 24 years later by Tiger Woods (2000 British Open).
5. Willie Mays wore the number 24 jersey for the New York/San Francisco Giants between 1951 and 1972. How was Mays honored after his retirement?

Answer: All of these are true

Mays, known as the "Say Hey Kid", had a career average of .302 and struck 660 home runs. He was an All-Star selection for 20 consecutive years from 1954 to 1973 (his retirement season).

An additional reason for designating May 24th as Willie Mays day is that he was born on May 6th, 1931.
6. The NHL has many rules governing the sport of ice hockey with one exception. There is no Rule 24. Why is this rule omitted?

Answer: It had to do with gross misconduct penalties and these were reclassified into Rule 23

The rule was lost at the start of the 2007-08 season when gross misconduct penalties were reclassified as game misconduct penalties, and included within Rule 23.
7. The sport of Popinjay requires competitors to knock down targets on a "roost". The rules state that these targets should comprise one cock bird, four hens, and a minimum of 24 chicks. Popinjay is a version of which of these sports?

Answer: Archery

The name "Popinjay" derives from an Old English word meaning parrot. An annual tournament, organised by the Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers in Scotland, is reputed to date back to 1483.

Today, the sport, which can take the form of either vertical or horizontal shooting, is most popular in Belgium. An alternative version, using rifles, is played in Denmark.
8. The Le Mans 24 hour race is the oldest of several that test motor racing endurance. How is the winner of the race determined?

Answer: The car that crosses the finish line after 24 hours and has completed the greatest number of laps

The winning car must also cover a minimum distance in the final hour. This is to prevent damaged cars from restarting their engines just before the 24 hour mark in order to inch over the line. For a car to be classified in the final standings, it must have covered at least 70% of the distance achieved by the winning car.
9. Which of these teams was unbeaten for 24 years before finally succumbing in September 1995?

Answer: The Harlem Globetrotters

The Globetrotters were unbeaten between January 5th 1971 when they lost 100-99 to the New Jersey Reds, and September 12th 1995 when they lost 91-85 to an All Star team led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This represented a run of 8829 consecutive victories although most of these were little more than exhibition matches. Prior to 1971, they had also been unbeaten for 2495 games stretching back to 1962.
10. Soccer star David Beckham had a season in the number 24 shirt for English giants Manchester United. In later moves to Real Madrid and the L.A. Galaxy, he chose 23. This was out of admiration for which other sporting legend that had made the 23 shirt his own?

Answer: Michael Jordan

Beckham started his career at Manchester United in the 28 shirt and moved to 24 for the 1996-97 season. The following year he was given 7 and he played in this and the 10 shirt for the remainder of his United career.

Jordan wore 23 for the Chicago Bulls until his retirement in 1993. The number was retired in his honor which meant that, on coming out of retirement two years later, he had to wear 45.
