Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It was an upset-filled Wimbledon in 2010. Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams finally restored some order by winning the men's and women's singles titles respectively, but the two losing finalists were both "outsiders" and not expected to make it that far. Who were the losing finalists in the men's and women's singles of Wimbledon 2010?

Answer: Thomas Berdych and Vera Zvonareva

Nadal beat 12th seeded Thomas Berdych in straight sets to win his second Wimbledon title after 2008 (he did not play in 2009), while Serena Williams beat 21st seed Vera Zvonareva, also in straight sets to win her fourth Wimbledon singles title (2002, 2003, 2009 and 2010). Serena Williams also did not lose a single set in the entire tournament.
2. Two unseeded women from East Europe made it all the way to the semifinals at the expense of some more famous names. Which two women caused major upsets on their way to the last four at Wimbledon 2010?

Answer: Tsevatana Pironkova and Petra Kvitova

The Bulgarian lady Pironkova upset Marion Bartoli and Venus Williams along the way before losing to Vera Zvonareva in the semifinals, while Kvitova (from the Czech Republic) beat Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki before losing to Serena Williams. Both Pironkova and Kvitova were ranked well outside the top 40 coming into Wimbledon 2010.
3. Two journeyman professionals on the ATP tour, John Isner and Nicholas Mahut immortalized themselves during a first round match played on one of the outside courts. The match turned out to be a real humdinger and broke almost every existing record in the game before Isner finally clinched the match in a little over 3 days, winning the final set 70-68. How many aces did John Isner hit in the whole match?

Answer: 113

The 113 aces hit by Isner became a new record for the most by any player in any tennis match. Nicholas Mahut did not disgrace himself either, hitting 103 aces himself. The previous record of most aces in a single tennis match was 78 by Ivo Karlovic.
4. Roger Federer had played the seven consecutive singles finals at Wimbledon (2003 to 2009 inclusive) and was attempting to reach an incredible eighth consecutive final. Unfortunately, it was not to be and he bowed out, the shock victim of a major upset. In which round did Federer fall at Wimbledon 2010?

Answer: Quarterfinals

Federer struggled through the first two rounds and looked to be getting into his own in the third and fourth rounds before Thomas Berdych shocked him in four sets in the quarterfinals, his earliest exit at Wimbledon since 2002. Coming into Wimbledon 2010 Federer had lost just 2 matches on grass since that first round match at Wimbledon in 2002 -- the 2008 Wimbledon final to Nadal and the finals of the Halle tournament to Lleyton Hewitt just before Wimbledon 2010.
5. It was not just the singles, but the doubles too which was all upset ridden. Which unseeded pair won the men's doubles title at Wimbledon 2010?

Answer: Jurgen Melzer - Phillip Petzschner

The defending champions and top-seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic lost in the second round, while the Bryan brothers, among the most successful doubles pair in tennis, lost in the quarterfinals. Jurgen Melzer and Phillip Petzschner beat Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau in the men's doubles final at Wimbledon 2010.
6. The women's doubles also saw an unranked pair clinch the title. Which unlikely pair of women won the doubles title at Wimbledon 2010?

Answer: Vania King - Yaroslav Shvedova

In the women's doubles event also the defending champions Venus and Serena Williams were upset in the quarterfinals and two unseeded pairs made it to the semifinals. Both pairs which played the finals were unseeded and in the end the pair of Vania King and Yaroslav Shvedova triumphed!
7. Two former world number one players from Belgium staging a comeback clashed early in the tournament. What was the result of the women's singles fourth round match between Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin?

Answer: Kim Clijsters won in three sets

Kim Clijsters won a thrilling fourth round match in three sets against Justine Henin, but lost in the quarterfinals to Vera Zvonareva.
8. India had something to cheer after all, when one of its players went on to win the Mixed Doubles title. Which among the following players was one half of the Mixed Doubles winning team at Wimbledon 2010?
