Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After starting out 4-0 in 2012, the Cards would go on to lose 11 of their next 12 games and at season's end coach Ken Whisenhunt, the first coach to take the Cards to the Super Bowl (in January 2009), was relieved of his duties. Who replaced him as head coach of the Big Red?

Answer: Bruce Arians

After filling as interim head coach for the Indianapolis Colts, while Chuck Pagano took time off to fight cancer, and leading the Colts to the playoffs, Arians was hired as the Cardinals head coach. He coached the Cardinals through the winningest period in their history going 49-30-1 which included the Cards first 13-win season in 2015.

After leaving the Cards at the end of the 2017 season, Arians won a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers in February 2021.
2. One of Arians and GM Steve Keim's moves in the 2013 season was to grab a competent starting QB, when they nabbed which former Heisman Trophy winner?

Answer: Carson Palmer

Carson Palmer won the Heisman in 2002. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals as the #1 pick in the 2003 draft. Palmer showed a lot of promise and led the Bengals to the playoffs in 2005 but was injured on his only pass of the day. The Cardinals sent a 6th round draft pick for the 2014 draft to the Raiders for him.

In his first season in Arizona he went 10-6 but the Cardinals failed to make the playoffs. The following season he was 6-0 when he injured the same knee he injured in the 2005 playoffs. Season 2015 was his best as a pro passing for over 4,600 yards and 35 touchdown passes and led the Cardinals to the NFC championship game.
3. The 2014 season was a strange year for the Cards. They won 11 games for the first time since 1975 but along the way both Carson Palmer and backup Drew Stanton were injured and out for the season, forcing the team to use its 3rd string QB Logan Thomas in 1 game and Ryan Lindley for the final 3 games and the playoffs. In the playoffs the 11 win Cards had to go on the road and play this team who finished with a sub .500 7-8-1 record. Who was this team?

Answer: Carolina Panthers

The Panthers had 4 less wins than the Cardinals but were able to host a playoff game as they won their division, whereas the Cards finished in 2nd place. Lindley couldn't lift the Cards to a win.
4. The 2015 season was the best season in franchise history. The team won 13 games for the first time and finished the season 13-3. In the playoffs the Cards faced the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round and it was the 2nd time they defeated the Packers in overtime (and as a result of a big play). Who scored the winning touchdown to win the game for the Cards to send them to their 2nd ever NFC title game?

Answer: Larry Fitzgerald

After Aaron Rogers tied the game on a Hail Mary as time expired, the Cardinals won the toss and after a touchback got the ball on their own 20 yard line. Carson Palmer took the snap, turned and ran into his own teammate. After righting himself he found Larry Fitzgerald wide open to the left. Fitzgerald caught the ball and ran through the defense until he was tripped up on the Packer 4 yard line. Two plays later Fitz scored on a shovel pass to send the Cardinals to the NFC title game at Carolina. Unfortunately the Cards couldn't repeat the magic and fell to the Panthers 49-15.

The Cards wouldn't reach the playoffs again until the 2021 season.
5. During the 2016 season the Cardinals were in one of the strangest games in NFL history. On a Sunday night in October the Cards took a 3-0 lead into the 4th quarter. The game ended up being tied 3-3 after regulation. The teams exchanged field goals in overtime and they also traded very makeable misses. Who was the opponent in this unusual game?

Answer: Seattle Seahawks

6. The 2017 season was the last for head coach Bruce Arians as well as QB Carson Palmer, who got injured halfway through the season. After sitting out a season Arians was hired to coach another team. What was that team?

Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

In 2020, with the help of Tom Brady, the Bucs defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl LV (played in February 2021), for Arians' first Super Bowl championship as head coach.
7. The 2018 season had the Cards in rebuild mode. In need of a quarterback to replace the retiring Carson Palmer, the Cardinals brought in another former Heisman Trophy in Sam Bradford ... but in the draft they traded up to the 10th position and took which QB?

Answer: John Rosen

Who was this QB?

Answer: Kyler Murray

The Cards drafted Murray with the #1 pick in the draft even though critics pointed to his small size (he is 5ft 11in tall or 1.80m) and had doubts he could be a successful QB in the NFL.
9. During the 2020 season, the Cardinals finished with an 8-8 record, but it was one play in one game that stood out. In a week 10 matchup with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, the Cardinals trailed 30-26. With time winding down and only time for one play, Murray scrambled to his left and threw a desperation pass that was caught by Deandre Hoskins in the midst of 3 defenders to win the game 32-30. This pass play has a name attached to it making it one for the history books. What was the name of this play?

Answer: The Hail Murray

The Hail Murray is now a play that's mentioned with famous plays. like the famous Hail Mary by the Cowboys against the Vikings in the 1975 playoffs, the Sea of Hands by the Raiders in the 1974 playoffs, and the Fail Mary by the Seattle Seahawks against the Packers during the 2012 referee strike.
10. The 2021 season was one of the most unusual in Cardinals history. The Cardinals started the season 7-0 and were 10-2 with 5 games to play. They only needed to win 2 games to secure the division title and a home playoff game. The Cardinals were successful in winning the NFC West.

Answer: False

The Cardinals limped through the final 5 games going 1-4 including losses to the then 2-11-1 Detroit Lions and a final week loss to the 7-10 Seahawks at home. Instead of hosting a playoff game they had to travel to LA to play the Rams. The Rams embarrassed the shell shocked Cardinals 34-11 on their way to winning Super Bowl LVI 23-20 over the Bengals.
11. The 2022 season was a huge step backward for the Cardinals. After a 2021 season where they won 11 games and made the playoffs, the Cardinals finished the 2022 season going 4-13 which included a seven-game losing streak to finish the season. There was 1 bright spot. On a week 2 game, the Cardinals trailed 23-7 but scored 16 points in the 4th quarter with the tying score coming as time expired. In overtime, Byron Murphy scooped up a fumble and ran 59 yards for the winning score. Against what team did this happen?

Answer: Las Vegas Raiders

The Cardinals beat the Raiders 29-23 in overtime. It was 1 of only 4 wins that season.
12. In two and a half seasons, beginning at the 2nd half of the 2021 season through the entire 2022 & 2023 seasons, how many home games did the Cardinals win?

Answer: 3

Starting in week 8 of the 2021 season through the 2023 season the Cardinals home record was 3-18. This included losing 8 consecutive home games between the 2021 & 2022 seasons.
13. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury was fired after the 2022 season. To replaced him the Cardinals hired Johnathan Gannon who was the defensive coordinator from what NFL team?

Answer: Philadelphia Eagles

Johnathan Gannon, fresh off of coaching the Eagles defense to a NFC championship, was hired as the 10th Cardinals head coach in the 21st century.
14. The Cardinals finished the 2023 season 4-13. They were without QB Kyler Murray for most of the season due to suffering a torn ACL in 2022. Who filled in as starting QB for the Big Red in his absence?

Answer: Joshua Dobbs

The Cardinals received Dobbs through a trade with the Browns. Dobbs would go on to a 1-7 record before being traded to the Vikings.
15. In 2024 the Cards weren't supposed to compete but, after dropping three of their first four games ,they went on a 5-1 run to end up 6-4 and in first place in the NFC West, heading into their bye. Coming out of the bye, the Card were able to maintain their momentum and won the division.

Answer: False

Coming out of the bye, the Cards proceeded to go 2-5 to finish a disappointing 8-9. Although, considering they won 8 games combined over the previous two seasons, one would think that this would be a great season with promise going forward ... but, being a Cardinals fan for 50 seasons, this collapse is typical of this franchise as similar 2nd half collapses happened throughout my time as a fan.
