Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals 1988-2005 Quiz

My Years As A Fan

I did a quiz on my years as a Cardinals fan covering the years in St. Louis during my fandom from 1975-1987. This quiz will cover the first seasons in Arizona as the Phoenix & Arizona Cardinals from 1988-2005 when they played in Tempe.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Cardinals (formed in 1920) moved from Chicago to St. Louis in 1960. After 28 seasons in St. Louis, the Cardinals were on the move for the second time in franchise history. In their first home game as the Phoenix Cardinals, who did they play on that Monday night in September 1988?

Answer: Dallas Cowboys

The Cardinals hosted the Cowboys in their first home game as the Phoenix Cardinals in front of a crowd of 67,139. Most were sent home disappointed as the Cards lost 17-14.
2. After an up and down start to the 1988 season (the Cards were 4-4 in the first half of the season), their 9th game saw them beat the Cowboys (avenging their defeat earlier in the season). In their 10th game, the Cards hosted the San Francisco 49ers in what would be a thriller. The Cards overcame a 23-0 deficit in the 3rd quarter to defeat the eventual Super Bowl champions 24-23. Who scored the game winning TD?

Answer: Roy Green

This game was played on November 6, 1988. The comeback happened nearly a year to the day from the Cardinals record comeback from 28-3 at the start of the 4th quarter, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the previous season (on November 8, 1987). The Cardinal won 31-28. Roy "Jet Stream" Green scored the winning TD with mere seconds left in the game.

The 25 pt 4th quarter comeback was the largest in NFL history.
3. The Cardinals entered the 1989 season with a lot of hope but unfortunately QB Neil Lomax's degenerative hip caused him to retire early before the season. To replace him they utilized their first round pick in the supplemental draft to draft a QB. Who was this future field general?

Answer: Timm Rosenbach

Rosenbach came out of Washington State University and was a running quarterback. I usually say he was Jake Plummer before there was a Jake Plummer. After a decent first season as a starter, Rosenbach was injured in pre-season as he tore his ACL in practice and wasn't the same player afterward only making sporadic appearances before retiring/leaving in 1992.

He attempted a comeback to the NFL with the New Orleans Saints in 1995 but injured himself and didn't play a game.
4. For the 1994 season, the Cards had 2 quarterbacks who had previously played for Super Bowl winning teams. One was Jim McMahon who quarterbacked the Chicago Bears to victory in Super Bowl XX. Who was the other Super Bowl winning QB?

Answer: Jay Schroeder

Schroeder was on the Washington Redskins team that won Super Bowl XXII. He entered the game briefly when Doug Williams got injured and missed a few plays. Boomer Esiason and Chris Chandler played for the Cardinals but in later years and Kurt Warner, of course, quarterbacked the Cardinals to their first Super Bowl appearance in 2008, which they lost 27-23 to the Pittsburgh Steelers with 35 seconds on the clock, when Pittsburgh scored a TD.
5. During the 1991 NFL draft, the Cardinals selected defensive tackle Eric Swann in the first round. What college did Swann attend?

Answer: None

Eric Swann was slated to attend North Carolina State but didn't meet academic standards. Instead, Swann opted to play semi-pro football for the Bay State Titans in Massachusetts for $5 an hour. Despite injury woes that plagued his career Swann would go on to make two Pro Bowl appearances for the Cardinals (1995 and 1996).
6. In the 1997 NFL draft the Cardinals finally drafted a QB to bring stability to the position. Who was this home grown QB?

Answer: Jake Plummer

Jake "The Snake" Plummer was drafted in the 2nd round out of Arizona State and brought some much needed stability to the position playing 6 seasons and leading the Cardinals to their first playoff appearance in a non-strike season since 1975.
7. In 1998 the Cardinals were finally playing well enough to be in the playoff hunt. In week 16 they played the San Diego Chargers: win and they're in the playoffs. The game was decided on a game winning 52 yard field goal as time expired. What former Packer made this kick?

Answer: Chris Jacke

Chris Jacke was better known for his time with the Packers but after Joe Nedney's inconsistent play Jacke was signed and kicked the Cardinals into the playoffs for the first time since moving to Arizona. The Cardinals beat the Padres 19-17.
8. In 1998 the Cardinals made the playoffs and played the Cowboys in Dallas in the Wild Card game. The Cardinals upset the Cowboys in this game.

Answer: True

The Cardinals defeated the Cowboys 20-7 but the score was closer than the game actually was as the Cards dominated the Cowboys at Texas Stadium. However, that was as far as they would go as Vikings were too much for the Big Red in the Divisional Round, winning 41-21.
9. The 2003 season was a less than successful one as the Cards would go 4-12. Win #4 that season came in the final week on the last play of the game. By winning this game, the Cardinals eliminated what team from the playoffs?

Answer: Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings needed to win this game to qualify for the playoffs and the last-placed Cardinals seemed like easy picking. The Vikings held an 11 point 4th quarter lead but the Cardinals scored twice in the final 2 minutes of the game, including a touchdown pass from Josh McCown to Nate Poole on the final play of the game, winning 18-17 knocking the Vikings from the playoffs.
10. During the Sun Devil Stadium years (1988-2005), how many winning seasons did the Cardinals have?

Answer: 1

The Cards had only one winning season, in 1998. It would also be the only season they made the playoffs, until the Super Bowl season of 2008.
