Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For years the Cards were in search of a quarterback that could help them reach the promise land. In 2006, with the 10th pick in that year's draft, the Cards picked what former Heisman Trophy winner?

Answer: Matt Leinart

The Cardinals selected Matt Leinart from the University of Southern California(USC) with the 10th pick in the 2006 draft. They thought they finally had their QB who could lead the team to glory. Sadly, Leinart was bitten by the injury bug in 2007 and lost his starting spot, to Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, which he never got back. Leinart never did live up to expectations and after leaving Arizona for Houston in 2010, Leinart played in only 4 games between the Texans and Oakland Raiders before retiring at the end of the 2012 season.
2. On Monday Night October 16, 2006 the 1-4 Cardinals took on the 5-0 Chicago Bears. The Cardinals came out firing on all cylinders taking a 20-0 lead at the half and at one point led 23-3. In one of the strangest games in NFL history the Bears ended up scoring 21 unanswered points and relied on Cardinals kicker missing a late field goal to win 24-23. The Bears did not score an offensive touchdown in this game?

Answer: True

The Bears were able to overcome a 23 point deficit by scoring 2 defensive touchdowns before Hall of Famer Devin Hester scored on a 82 yard punt return. It was the first time in NFL history a team was able to overcome a 20 point deficit to win without scoring an offensive touchdown.

This game proved to be the beginning of the end to Dennis Green's tenure as Cardinals coach, especially after the postgame press conference meltdown ("They were who we thought they were!"). Thanks to that, this game is known as the "Monday Night Meltdown".
3. After a dismal 5-11 season in 2005, and another 5-11 season in 2006, the Cardinals fired coach Dennis Green and replaced him, with what member of the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff?

Answer: Ken Whisenhunt

The Cardinals interviewed many candidates for the head coaching job until signing former Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt helped lead the Steelers to victory in Super Bowl XL (Feb. 2006). Russ Grimm also interviewed for the job but in the end he followed Whisenhunt into the desert as the Cardinals offensive line coach.
4. After an 8-8 finish to the 2007 season the Cardinals entered the 2008 season full of hope. The Cardinals went through several up and down periods of the season and ended with a 9-7 record, which was good enough to win the weak NFC West division. Who did the Cardinals face in their first home playoff game since 1947?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

In a back and forth contest the Cardinals pulled off the victory 30-24. Larry Fitzgerald scored the first of his NFL record 8 touchdown passes on a trick play in the first quarter. The win was the first playoff win for the Cards since 1998 and their first home playoff win since the 1947 championship, when the franchise was still in Chicago.
5. After defeating the Falcons in the first round of the 2008 post-season playoffs, the Cardinals traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, to take on the Panthers, a team that defeated them earlier in the season. The Cardinals would eventually "shock the world" and defeat the Panthers 33-13. The following week the Cardinals would host their first ever NFC Championship game. Who would be their opponent?

Answer: Philadelphia Eagles

The Cardinals defeated the Eagles in one of the most exciting playoff games of the early 2000s with the game going down to the final seconds 32-25; marking the franchise's first NFC Championship and making it to their first ever Super Bowl.
6. Season 2008 saw the Cardinals make their first-ever Super Bowl appearance (Super Bowl XLIII in Feb. 2009). Who was their opponent in the Big Game?

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

In what is considered arguably the most exciting Super Bowl of all time with the Cards even holding a late lead with the game going down to the final minute. But in the end the Steelers would win 27-23.
7. During the 2008 post-season (January 2009), this Cardinals wide receiver set the record for playoff touchdowns. Who was this dynamic receiver?

Answer: Larry Fitzgerald

"Fitz" had an incredible playoff season scoring 7 touchdowns and setting a new playoff record. None was bigger than the 64 yard touchdown pass he caught late in the 4th quarter to give the Cardinals the lead in the Super Bowl 23-20. Unfortunately, an equally fantastic catch by Santonio Holmes put the Steelers over the top (they won 27-23).

The Steelers led 20-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
8. In 2009 the Cardinals repeated as NFC West champions with a 10-6 record. Their opponent in the Wild Card round was Aaron Rogers and the upstart Green Bay Packers. In the highest scoring playoff game to date, the Cardinals won the back and forth contest 51-46 in overtime. Who scored the winning touchdown in the extra period?

Answer: Karlos Dansby

In a thrilling game that is still being talked about, the Cardinals took a 24-10 halftime lead, then had a 31-10 3rd quarter lead, but the Packers fought back. In a back and forth 2nd half the game ended 45-45 in regulation. The Packers won the toss and got the ball on their 20. On the 2nd play of the drive, cornerback Michael Adams on a corner blitz hit Rogers, forcing a fumble which went right into Karlos Dansby's arms.

He ran unopposed into the endzone to win the game for the Big Red.
9. The 2009 season ended in defeat in New Orleans when the Saints beat the Cards 45-14; but the bigger loss was when QB Kurt Warner was knocked from the game in the first half in a targeted hit stemming from an alleged bounty program on the Saints. This prompted Warner to retire. The Cardinals had a real problem at quarterback with 3 different starting quarterbacks being used. Which QB was not a part of that rotation?

Answer: Matt Leinart

Matt Leinart was the Cards 1st round pick in 2006 and was supposed to be the QB of the future. However, injuries and the inability to fit into Ken Whisenhunt's offensive scheme, Leinart was thought to be Warner's heir apparent but in a stunning move he was cut in pre season. Whisenhunt brought in Anderson from Cleveland and rookies Max Hall and John Skelton. None were successful and the Cards finished the 2009 season 5-11.
10. After finishing 8-8 in 2011, the Cards entered the 2012 season full of hope. Things looked to be trending up when they started the season 4-0, which included a win over Tom Brady and the Patriots in New England. However, the next sound was a tremendous thud, as they lost their next 9 games (their 9th was a 58-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks); eventually costing coach Ken Whisenhunt his job. Who did the Cardinals hire to replace him as head coach?

Answer: Bruce Arians

Bruce Arians led the Indianapolis Colts to the playoffs in the 2012 serving as interim head coach while head coach Chuck Pagano was being treated for cancer. Arians went on to lead the Cardinals to a 49-28-1 record which included 2 playoff appearances and a division title in 2015 (which was a franchise best 13-3 record).
