Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After the 2005 season, Barry Alvarez retired and was replaced by defensive coordinator Bret Bielema. What was Bielema's record in his very first season as head coach at the University of Wisconsin?

Answer: 12-1

A year after Alvarez led the Badgers to a 10-3 mark, Bielema led the Badgers to a 12-1 record, including a second straight Capital One Bowl victory over Arkansas.
2. What National Football League head coach was the linebackers coach for the Badgers in 1987 under Don Morton?

Answer: Lovie Smith

Smith was the linebackers coach for only a season before moving on to Arizona State.
3. After he graduated in 2007, which Badger quarterback left as the winningest in school history?

Answer: John Stocco

With a Capital One Bowl victory over Arkansas, Stocco became the school's all-time winningest quarterback surpassing Brooks Bollinger, who went 30-12 from 1999-2002. Stocco finished his career at Wisconsin with an impressive 31-7 record.
4. Between 2004 and 2006, the Badgers were defeated just once at Camp Randall Stadium in those three seasons. Who defeated them?

Answer: Iowa

In 2005, in Barry Alvartez's last home game as Wisconsin head coach, Wisconsin jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but Iowa responded with twenty straight points to give Iowa a 20-10 win in Madison. That was Wisconsin's only loss at home in the three year span, including a thrilling 23-20 victory over Michigan in 2005.
5. After the Badgers won their first Rose Bowl in 1994, Alvarez was the leading canidate for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' head coaching vacancy before Alvarez pulled out.

Answer: True

Barry Alvarez was the leading candidate for the head coaching vacancy for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but elected to stay at Wisconsin and win a few more Rose Bowls. Tampa Bay hired fellow former Big Ten coach Tony Dungy as head coach and he brought them to respectability.
6. Between 1993 and 2002, the Badgers had at least one running back to rush for over 1,000 yards in the season. Which one of these backs wasn't among the backs who did reach the 1,000 yard mark rushing for a season?

Answer: Erik Bickerstaff

Brent Moss started the streak when he rushed for 1,637 yards in 1993 and ended in 2003 when Anthony Davis was injured in the third game of the season in an embarrasing loss to UNLV. Dewayne Smith led the team with 857 yards rushing. After Moss, the backs that kept the streak going were, in order, Terrell Fletcher, Carl McCullough, Ron Dayne, Michael Bennett, and Anthony Davis.
7. What is the most lopsided win in Wisconsin history?

Answer: 1890 vs. UW-Whitewater 106-0

On November 1, 1890, the Wisconsin Badgers won at home against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater by the final of 106-0.
8. In what year did the Badgers experience their first number one ranking?

Answer: 1952

They have been ranked number one just once after a 20-6 victory over Illinois on October 4, 1952. They were immediately knocked from their number one perch the following week after getting beaten 23-14 against Ohio State. On October 31, 1942, the Badgers upset powerhouse Ohio State 17-7 at Camp Randall Stadium behind Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch and the Badgers powerful groud attack.

The Badgers beat number one ranked Northwestern 37-6 on November 10, 1962, behind quarterback Ron Vander Kelen.
9. The 1951 Wisconsin Badgers defense is considered the best defense in Badger history. What was its nickname?

Answer: Hard Rocks

The 1951 "Hard Rocks" defense led the nation in defense, only allowing 154.8 yards per game. That ferocious defense actually outscored opponents' whole team 58-53. The Badgers lost 14-10 to Illinois in the last game of the season in which the Badgers should have won.

They were up 10-7 at halftime and traveled to the Illinois one yard line before going nowhere on four straight downs. Illinois traveled the length of the field to put Illinois up 14-10 and that proved to be the final score. The Badgers finished the season at 7-1-1 and missed out on the Rose Bowl because of that Illinois defeat.
10. In one of the best traditions in college football, what song is played between the third and fourth quarters at Camp Randall Stadium?

Answer: "Jump Around" by House of Pain

It used to be "If You Wanna Be a Badger" before October 10, 1998. That all changed. The Badgers played "Jump Around" on that date in a big game against Purdue and it stuck. They won 31-24 against Purdue and went on to win the Rose Bowl. After that Purdue game, "Jump Around" has been a tradition at Camp Randall Stadium and the stadium gets rockin' and it seems like the place is going to collapse.

The tradition is widely known around the country and what a tradition it is!
