Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. COB BY BOX or cob by the ears, this corn-loving manager set a record in September 2009 for being the first manager ejected 150 career times from the game. Who was this manager that gave the umpires such an earful?

Answer: Bobby Cox

Bobby managed the Braves from 1978-1981, then took the helm of the Blue Jays from 1982-1985. He came back to Atlanta in 1990, seeing his first league pennant in 1991. In the 1990s, Cox took the Braves to five World Series, but could only walk away with one title.
2. JEST A PRO BULL, this National League slugger was the first in 2009 to hit 40 home runs in the season. Who was this Rookie of the Year and multiple MVP Award winner, who was seeking his first-ever home run crown?

Answer: Albert Pujols

The Cardinal won the Rookie of the Year Award in 2001. Prior to his 2009 quest, Albert was in the top five in the home run title hunt five times. His first two MVPs came in 2005 and 2008.
3. The 1998 New York Yankees won an amazing 114 of the 162 games played in the season. In 2001, the Mariners won 116 games in the 162-game season. They both fell short of which team that was like A BUS CHIC COG, and drove over everyone to win 116 games in their 152-game season?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The 1906 Cubs were headlined with the names of Frank Chance, Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Mordecai Brown. The Cubs went 116-36 under player-manager Frank Chance. They went up against the 93-58 White Sox in the World Series, and lost four games to two.
4. In the 1990s, pitcher Greg Maddux won four consecutive NL Cy Young awards with two different teams. Another pitcher just a few seasons later also won four consecutive NL Cy Youngs, and did them with only one team. Who was this pitcher who was NO DARN SHY JON because he also won the Cy Young in the American League earlier?

Answer: Randy Johnson

Maddux won his Cy Young's from 1992-1995 with the Cubs and Braves, respectively. When he took his fourth award in the National League in 1995, Randy Johnson won the American League Cy Young. Randy would go on to win four consecutive with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 1999-2002.
5. When the 2008 season came to an end, this player looked like A RED FLESHY FIG because he was stuck on 499 career home runs. Who was this that became a member of the 500 Home Run Club in 2009?

Answer: Gary Sheffield

Gary was a Detroit Tiger in 2008, and a suspension of a few games near the end of the 2008 season cost him the 500 membership for the time being. Sheffield came back in 2009 with the New York Mets. On April 17 against the Brewers, Sheffield hit number 500 off Mitch Stetter while leading off the seventh inning. The Mets won the game 5-4.
6. A stolen base is a base free of charge. This team wore a CLOD LIKE SATAN HAT and burned up the base paths in the 1970s, and set an American League record by stealing 341 bases in one season. Which team was this?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

The 1976 Athletics were led by centerfielder Billy North who stole 75. They had seven players steal in double-figures. Even utility player Don Baylor stole 52, and designated hitter Matt Alexander got into the act with 20. Even with all that, the Royals still took the AL West crown by 2.5 games over Oakland.
7. I could say, "YE I SAWMILL", because I sawed off many home runs by becoming the fourth player in Major League history to hit 500 home runs in a career. I joined the immortal Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Mel Ott. Who am I?

Answer: Willie Mays

Ruth hit 714 over his career. Foxx, mainly with the Athletics and Red Sox, ended his 1940 season with exactly 500 home runs, and would go on to hit another 34 before he retired in 1945. Mel Ott of the New York Giants would become the third player with 500 in 1945. Mays became the fourth player on September 13, 1965, with a blast off Houston Astro Don Nottebart. Willie would retire with 660. Slugger Hank Aaron became the fifth player in history to reach the 500-mark in 1968.

In July, his number 500 came off Giants pitcher Mike McCormick.
8. In the movie, "Major League", Pedro Cerrano would have Jobu take the fear away from bats. This Los Angeles Dodger had a fear of bats when Giants pitcher Juan Marichal clubbed him over the head with one. Although he used to say to his reliever, "OH RON, SORE JOB", after this incident he said, "Oh me and my sore head". Who was this Dodger catcher?

Answer: John Roseboro

Unfortunately, John's Associated Press obituary read, "Former Los Angeles catcher John Roseboro, forever remembered as the player Juan Marichal clubbed over the head with a bat during a game in 1965..." Roseboro, who died in 2002, was a great catcher and complimented the pitching likes of Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, and relief pitcher Ron Perranoski.

The Candlestick Park game in 1965 had Koufax on the mound with Marichal at-bat. After Roseboro and Marichal exchanged a few words, Marichal began clubbing Roseboro with the bat, leaving him more than bloodied.

The clubbing resulted in 14 stitches to John's head. However, after missing two games, he came back to begin an 11-game hitting streak. Ironically, Marichal finished his final Major League season as a Dodger in 1975.
9. Like A MESS IN TIN TOWN, this team set an American League record by hitting five home runs in one inning of a game in 1966. The Kansas City Athletics could do nothing but watch them all fly. Which team was this with the big bats?

Answer: Minnesota Twins

On June 9, the Twins' Rich Rollins and Zoilo Versalles tagged Catfish Hunter with back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning. With Hunter relieved by Paul Lindblad, Tony Oliva and Don Mincher greeted Lindblad with two more back-to-back home runs. So, the Athletics relieved Lindblad in lieu of John Wyatt. Mr. Wyatt, meet Mr. Harmon Killebrew and his bat. Boom, home run number five was hit. Six runs on six hits, five of them home runs in the inning.

The Twins defeated the Royals 9-4. The first National League team to hit five home runs in one inning was the New York Giants, who in 1939 showed their power against the Cincinnati Reds.
10. In modern-day baseball, Dodger Maury Wills became the first speedster to steal 100 bases in a season in 1962. Who was the second player in modern-day history that could make a BOOK CURL when he stole more than 100 bases?

Answer: Lou Brock

Wills' 104 record was set in 1962. The Cardinals' Brock stole 118 in 1974. It would be the only time in his career that Lou reached the century mark, but still retired with 938. Rickey Henderson of the Athletics was the next player to steal 100, and he did it three times in his career. Vince Coleman of the Cardinals was fourth player to reach 100 stolen bases in 1985, and the last player of the century to top the 100-mark.
