Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first Major League baseball team, to call Seattle its hometown?

Answer: Pilots

Seattle found the Pilots in their only season in 1969. The team found themselves with the 2nd worst record in baseball that season, finishing with a 64-98 record, above the Cleveland Indians. The team moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers of the American League the following season.

The newly formed Seattle Mariners found their place in the great state of Washington in 1977, ironically, finishing with the same inaugural record of 64-98.
2. Who joined Ozzie Smith, as a 2002 Hall of Fame inductee?

Answer: He was a sole inductee

The others listed were inducted more than 10 years earlier. This was the first time since 1993, where only one player was inducted. His name in 1993 was Reggie Jackson. Ozzie, a tremendous loss to the Padres after 4 seasons, played his remaining 15 seasons as a St.Louis Cardinal. Ozzie was a 15 time All-Star, and a 12 time shortstop Gold Glove. He retired in 1996.
3. What team won the 1902 World Series?

Answer: There was no World Series

When Mike retired, he had hit more than twice the amount by the 2nd place team runner-up, Del Ennis, with 259.
5. I was a rookie in 1949 for the Cleveland Indians. I played for 17 seasons in the Major Leagues, but it spanned through 5 decades. 4 of my 5 born names were, Saturnino Orestes Armas Arrieta, as I was born in Cuba in 1922. I then came out of retirement once again, and played in 2 games for the White Sox in 1980, and retired for the final time. In my career, I won 3 Gold Gloves as a left fielder, and was in the season MVP top ten voting 5 times. Who am I?

Answer: Minnie Minoso

The others listed retired before 1949. Saturnino Orestes Armas Minoso Arrieta, began his career with the Indians in 1949 at the age of 26. His next season was in 1951, where he played continuous until retirement in 1964 with the White Sox. He came back with the same team in 1976, then again in Chicago in 1980 for 2 games.

Answer: Hack Wilson

Sosa was the only other Cub mentioned. Hack smacked 56 home runs in 1930 for the Cubs. A stellar year, Wilson also led the league in walks, RBIs, home runs, and slugging percentage. He retired in 1934 after 12 seasons. Sosa first topped 55, when he hit 66 in 1998.
9. What team did manager Walter Alston lead to 7 National League pennants?

Answer: Dodgers

The others listed were all American League teams. Alston managed the Brooklyn, and later Los Angeles Dodgers to 7 NL pennants, taking the team to 4 World Series victories. He stepped down due to illness in 1976, and gave the reins to Tom Lasorda. Alston died in 1984 with 2040 career wins.
