Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What position did the great Hank Aaron play throughout his career?

Answer: Outfield

Aaron was an outfielder with the Braves from Milwaukee and Atlanta most of his career. He retired with the Milwaukee Brewers after 2 seasons in 1976. His 755 home runs topped the 20th century.
2. In 1902, the Cleveland franchise was called what?

Answer: Bronchos

After beginning their history as the Blues in 1901, the team changed its name to the Bronchos, but only for the 1902 season. From there they went to the Naps, and finally the Indians in 1915. The Bronchos' fifth place finish was led by Nap Lajoie.
3. What player had the nicknames of 'Commerce Comet', and 'Muscles'?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

Mantle was a total package with the Yankees throughout his entire career. In 18 seasons in the Pinstripes he smacked 536 home runs. Mickey won 3 MVP Awards, and hit 18 World Series home runs in 12 appearances. He died in 1995.
4. I 'broke' into the Majors in the late 1940s. I won a Rookie of the Year Award and a MVP Award in different seasons. I played my entire career of only 10 seasons with one team. I went to 6 World Series, but only became victorious one time. I led the league 2 times in stolen bases, and once with a batting crown. Who am I?

Answer: Jackie Robinson

Robinson did indeed break into the Majors with a capital B, as the color barrier was finally broken. Jackie won the Rookie of the Year in 1947, then the MVP in 1949. His dedication paved the way for many future greats.
5. How many World Series did the Philadelphia Phillies win throughout the entire 20th century?

Answer: 1

The Phillies' only fame to glory came in 1980 under manager Dallas Green. The Phillies defeated the Kansas City Royals 4 games to 2. The Series MVP was Mike Schmidt. The Phillies had been to the World Series 5 times in the 20th century.
6. Which of the following managers played in only one Major League game in their career?

Answer: Walter Alston

Durocher leads this list with 17 seasons as a player. Huggins played for 13 seasons, and Martin played for 11 seasons. It was Walter Alston who not only played in one game, but only had one at-bat. In 1936, Alston came to bat for the first and only time in his career at the age of 24 for the St.Louis Browns. Unfortunately he struck out in his only appearance.

He later became one of the greatest managers in history, by managing the Dodgers for 23 seasons, beginning in 1954. He took the Dodgers to 7 World Series, winning 4 of them.
7. How many times in Honus Wagner's career, did he win 25 games in a season?

Answer: 0

Wagner was a shortstop, but did pitch in two games early in the 20th century. 'The Flying Dutchman' led the league in batting 8 times in his 21 seasons. He began his great career with 3 seasons with the now defunct Louisville Colonels, then the remaining 18 seasons with his Pittsburgh Pirates.
8. I only played for 10 seasons in my career with 3 franchises. In those 10 seasons, I won a Rookie of the Year, a Cy Young, and a league MVP Award. I went to 3 World Series but never won a game. Not bad for a pitcher, as I retired with a .271 batting average and hit 15 home runs of my own. Who am I?

Answer: Don Newcombe

The others listed were not pitchers. Newcombe spent most of his career with the Dodgers. In 1949 he won the Rookie of the Year Award, the same year as teammate Jackie Robinson won the MVP. In 1956, he won the Cy Young and the National League MVP Award. Don retired with a fine record of 149-90 in 1960.
9. Who was the first player in history in both leagues to win the Rookie of the Year Award twice?

Answer: None listed

The Rookie of the Year Award can only be received in a player's rookie season. Of these greats listed, Brooks was the only one who did not win a Rookie of the Year Award, but made up for it with his 15 consecutive All-Star appearances, and his 1964 MVP Award.
10. How many 2002 World Series Champions Anaheim Angels won 20 games in the season?

Answer: 0

Jarrod Washburn led the team with a record of 18-6. 2002 would be the 22nd consecutive season that the Angels could not produce a 20 game winner. Their last was the great Nolan Ryan in 1974, when he won 22.
