Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After entering September 1969 as the leaders in the National League, the Cubs lost a potentional division title to which team?

Answer: New York Mets

The Amazin' Mets stole September from the Cubbies and went on to a dominant postseason, including victory in the 1969 World Series.
2. When the Red Sox lost game seven of the 1975 World Series, they blew how big of a lead?

Answer: 3 runs

The Red Sox, fresh off their miraculous game six win, had a 3-0 lead. They let the Cincinnati Reds score 4 unanswered runs to lose the World Series.
3. In the 1980s, two players had slow rollers through their legs to lose championships. We all know about Bill Buckner in 1986, but who was the victim in 1984?

Answer: Leon Durham

After blowing a 2 games to none lead, a slow roller under Leon 'Bull' Durham's legs let the Padres tie and eventually win game five to clinch the National League pennant.
4. During 'The Buckner Game' of the 1986 World Series, who took the loss for the Red Sox?

Answer: Calvin Schiraldi

With a two run lead in the 10th, Red Sox reliever Calvin Schiraldi got the first two hitters out. He then proceeded to give up three consecutive singles, scoring one. Bob Stanley then came into the game to let the tying run score on a wild pitch, and to let the winning run score after the ground ball went through Buckner's legs.

Although Stanley was pitching when the game ended, the winning run got on base when Schiraldi was pitching, so Schiraldi got the loss.
5. In game six of the 2003 NLCS, what was the name of the fan who became infamous for his attempt to catch a foul ball?

Answer: Steve Bartman

During the eighth inning when the Cubs had a good lead, a foul ball down the left field line went right towards him. However, Moises Alou thought it was his ball too. For Cub fans, the argument of whether or not he interfered with Alou's ability to make the catch is still a heated debate. Nevertheless, when the inning ended, the Marlins had captured the lead and would win game six.
6. The 1964 Phillies lost a seemingly insurmountable lead in the National League standings to fall just one game short of the 1964 World Series. Who did represent the National League in the 1964 World Series?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

With a 6 1/2 game lead with 12 games left, the Phillies lost 10 straight games and lost to the Cardinals in the pennant race by one game. In a move that cost Phillies manager Gene Mauch a chance to go to the World Series, he decided to use only his two top pitchers, Jim Bunning and Chris Short, in the starting rotation, a questionable strategy that left the Phillies in the dust and just short of the Fall Classic.
7. The 1978 Yankees came from close to the back of the pack in July, to eventually win the AL East, AL Pennant, and the World Series. Who blew the double-digit lead in the standings?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Who could have thunk it? The once-cursed Red Sox were the ones who suffered after blowing their huge lead and then losing a one-game playoff to the Bronx Bombers to miss the postseason once again.
8. Who was the umpire whose blown call cost the St. Louis Cardinals game six of the 1985 World Series?

Answer: Don Denkinger

With no one out in the bottom of the ninth, Jorge Orta hit a ground ball and was seemingly thrown out at first, but Don Denkinger called him safe. Consequently, the Cardinals made enough errors to lose game six, and were blown out 11-0 by the Kansas City Royals in game seven to lose the 1985 World Series.
9. Which team blew a 6-0 lead in game three of the 1996 World Series, and subsequently lost their two games to none lead to lose the Series in six games?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

Though dominant in the National League East for more than one decade, the Braves had won only one World Series in home of Atlanta. Losing four straight games in 1996, losing a famous game seven to the Twins in 1991, and other World Series losses are more what fans remember of the Braves and their postseason efforts.
10. Cub fans are very familiar with the Billy Goat curse that has kept them out of the World Series since 1945. Who owned the goat in question?

Answer: Billy Sianis

According to three interviews with Sam Sianis, William Sianis' nephew-in-law, the Curse of the Billy Goat can only be dispelled by the Chicago Cubs organization by showing a true sincere fondness for goats, allowing them into Wrigley Field because they like them, and not simply for publicity reasons.
