Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1927 when Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs, how many times did he strike out in the season?

Answer: 80-89 times

The Babe struck out 89 times in 1927, which was 29 more times than he homered. He also led the Yankees with strikeouts that year although Gehrig was a close second with 84.
2. How many times did Giant great Juan Marichal win a Cy Young Award?

Answer: He never won it

Marichal never won the Cy Young. He was most famous for the 'bat incident' involving Dodger catcher John Roseboro for which he was suspended for eight games in 1965.
When Roseboro threw the ball back to the pitcher, it flew past Marichal's face. Marichal then turned around and hit him with the bat.
3. Which of the following did NOT receive a Rookie of the Year award?

Answer: Steve Garvey

Garvey was not a rookie of the year. Moon won it in 1954 with St. Louis, McCovey with the Giants in 1959, and 5'5" Albie Pearson won his in 1958 with Washington.
4. What was the nickname of the Houston baseball team from 1962 to 1964?

Answer: Colt '45s

Houston became the first pro baseball team in Texas in 1962 and sported the team name of Colt .45s. A few years later, a move to the newly built Astrodome and Houston's connection to the ever growing U.S. Space Program lent itself to a name change -- the Houston Astros.
5. Who was the first manager of the Kansas City Royals?

Answer: Joe Gordon

Joe Gordon was the first at the helm in 1969. They finished in 4th place behind the hitting of Pat Kelly and Lou Piniella. The 1969 season was the last in Gordon's managerial career.
6. The 1960 World Series had the National League's Pittsburgh Pirates facing the American League's New York Yankees. The Pirates finally won in seven games. Who was the Most Valuable Player of the Series?

Answer: Bobby Richardson

Bill Mazeroski's walk off home run in Game 7 won the Series for the Pirates, but Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson won the MVP. It was the first time someone from the losing team had done so.
7. Who was the first manager of the New York Mets?

Answer: Casey Stengel

Casey Stengel managed the Mets from their inaugural season in 1962, through to 1965. The first season was quite the disaster, with the Mets losing 120 games. Casey's final record with the NY Mets was 174 wins and 404 losses, which prompted him to quip "Doesn't anyone here know how to play this game?"
8. The Philadelphia Athletics moved to which city in 1955?

Answer: Kansas City

The A's completed their move to Kansas City in 1955 and played their entire history in Municipal Stadium. Their final record in KC was less than stellar, as they had almost 400 more losses than wins. They moved in 1967 to become the Oakland Athletics.
9. Who was the first designated hitter in regular season play?

Answer: Ron Bloomberg

Bloomberg faced off against Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant on April 6, 1973 and drew a walk on five pitches. Bloomberg finished the game with one hit in three at bats.
10. "The Catch" by Willie Mays is regarded as one of the most historic plays in World Series history. Mays made an over the shoulder catch of a long fly ball during the first game of the 1954 World Series. What Cleveland Indian batter took Mays to deep center field?

Answer: Vic Wertz

Left-handed Wertz drove the ball 420 feet into the Polo Grounds deep center field. This would have been a home run in many other stadiums, but the Polo Grounds had the deepest center field in the league and the "Say Hey Kid" was able to track it down.
