Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Randy Couture. He was the first person to win UFC Championships in two different weight classes, but his first title was the UFC Heavyweight Championship which he won all the way back at UFC Japan. Can you recall who it was he defeated?

Answer: Maurice Smith

Randy won a massive victory over Vitor Belfort to become the number one contender for the UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 15 on October 17, 1997.
He fought Maurice Smith at UFC Japan on December 21, 1997, where he won via majority decision after 21 minutes of action.
2. Tito Ortiz. His first title was the newly created UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, which he won by unanimous decision at UFC 25. What was the name of his opponent in the match?

Answer: Wanderlei Silva

Frank Shamrock retired and vacated his UFC Middleweight Championship (199 lb). This division was then renamed the Light Heavyweight division and a new title created.
Tito Ortiz and Wanderlei Silva were considered the two top contenders at the time, and were chosen to compete for the title on April 14, 2000 at UFC 25.
3. Matt Hughes. He won the UFC Welterweight title by KO in a controversial decision at UFC 34 by defeating which competitor?

Answer: Carlos Newton

UFC 34 took place on November 2, 2001. The victory came when Hughes, caught in a triangle choke by Carlos Newton, lifted Newton in the air and slammed him to the mat, causing him to lose consciousness.
The controversy occurred after the match when Newton said that the reason Hughes fell to the mat was because Hughes himself was already unconscious from the triangle choke Newton had him in, therefore the knockout victory was just a fluke.
4. Mark Coleman. He was the first UFC Heavyweight Champion, winning the title at UFC 12. Who was the opponent he defeated for this honour?

Answer: Dan Severn

This occurred on February 7, 1997. Dan Severn was a late replacement in the fight, substituting for his friend, Don Frye, who was unable to participate due to injury.
Coleman won an impressive victory by submission choke after only 2:57 of the fight.
5. B.J. Penn. He moved up in weight classes for his first championship, the UFC Welterweight Championship, which he won at UFC 46. Who was his opponent in the match?

Answer: Matt Hughes

Hughes had already defeated all the available opposition within the welterweight division, so Penn moved up weight classes for his shot at the title on January 31, 2004.
Considered a complete underdog going into the fight, Penn won just four minutes into the first round by rear naked choke with only 23 seconds left in the round.
6. Chuck Liddell. Considered the top contender for a number of years, he finally won the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship at UFC 52 with a first round knockout victory against which UFC fighter?

Answer: Randy Couture

Both competitors served as coaches during The Ultimate Fighter's first season before going into this fight.

7. Georges St-Pierre. Considered one of the top "pound for pound" fighters by multiple MMA sources, his first title win was the UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 65. What was the name of the fighter he defeated?

Answer: Matt Hughes

Both competitors appeared as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 4 which increased the animosity between Hughes and St-Pierre going in to the fight.
UFC 65 took place on November 18, 2006. St-Pierre won the fight by TKO at 1:25 of round two after dominating Matt Hughes for the entire fight.
8. Pat Miletich. He became the first UFC Lightweight Champion (under 200 lbs) at UFC Brazil. Who was his opponent for this historical victory?

Answer: Mikey Burnett

Miletich became one of the top contenders in the newly formed UFC Lightweight division by winning the first Lightweight tournament at UFC 16.
He competed for the new UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC Brazil (also known as UFC 17.5) on October 16th, 1998 defeating Burnett by split decision at 21:00.
The weight class limits were changed in 2001, and Miletich became champion of the newly formed Welterweight division.
9. Rich Franklin. A former Mathematics teacher in Cincinnati, Ohio, Franklin quickly made a name for himself in the UFC. He won his first title at UFC 53 defeating which opponent for the UFC Middleweight Championship?

Answer: Evan Tanner

People started to take notice at The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale when Franklin defeated UFC Legend Ken Shamrock via TKO.
This led into UFC 53 on June 4, 2005 where Franklin won the title due to doctor stoppage at 3:25 of the fourth round, and earning a position as coach on The Ultimate Fighter 2.
10. Brock Lesnar. In only his third UFC fight, Lesnar won the UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 91 in a massive victory against which opponent?

Answer: Randy Couture

Known primarily for his career in the WWE, Lesnar made his debut in the UFC on February 2, 2008 at UFC 81 losing to former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir.
