Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 31

Answer: Pelle Lindbergh

Pelle was a member of the 1980 Swedish Olympic bronze medal winning team. He was a 2nd pick by the Flyers in 1979 and immediately came under the wing of the legendary Bernie Parent. Pelle even wore Parent's Fibrosport style mask. In 1985 Lindbergh won the Vezina Trophy while leading the Flyers to the Stanley Cup finals. Sadly on November 10, 1985 Lindbergh lost control of his Porsche and crashed into a wall in front of a school.

He died of his injuries the following day. Even though his number wasn't officially retired no one has worn #31 for the Flyers since his death.
2. 27

Answer: Ron Hextall

After the loss of Pelle Lindbergh the Flyers were in need of a replacement. They didn't have to look far as in their farm system sat this hot headed goalie from Manitoba. During his rookie year of 1986-87, he immediately made an impact leading the Flyers back to the finals only to lose to the powerful Edmonton Oilers 4 games to 3.

Hextall became only the 3rd player to win the Conn Smythe(most valuable player in the playoffs) from a team that lost in the finals. He also won the Vezina Trophy as the leagues top goalie in his rookie year(1986-87).

Hextall became the first goalie to score a goal by shooting the puck into the net when he scored against the Boston Bruins on December 8, 1987. He repeated the feat during the 1989 playoffs when he became the first goalie to ever score in the playoffs when he scored a goal against the Washington Capitals on April 11th.

This was also a short handed goal.
3. 35

Answer: Wayne Stephenson

"Steph" came to the Flyers from St. Louis in 1975 to back up Bernie Parent. During the 1976 season, Stephenson became the primary starting goalie due to Parent having to deal with a neck injury. It was Stephenson and not Parent who was in goal against the vaunted Soviet Union Red Army hockey team on January 11, 1976 and defeated them 4-1.
4. 1

Answer: Doug Favell

Although #1 for the Flyers is best known by Bernie Parent, the first Flyer to wear the number was Doug Favell. Favell and Parent were teammates but during this time Parent wore #30 while Favell wore #1. Favell is known for wearing the first painted mask when he painted his Higgins style mask orange for Halloween. Parent and Favell were traded for each other before the 1973-74 season.

It was then Parent started wearing #1 in homage to his mentor the legendary Jacques Plante.
5. 30

Answer: Bruce Gamble

Bruce Gamble was traded to the Flyers for Bernie Parent in 1971. Gamble's claim to fame was on February 8, 1972 during a game against the Vancouver Canucks he suffered a heart attack but still finished the game. Although he won the game 3-1 it would be the last game he would play. Sadly he passed away in 1982 at the young age of 44.
6. 49

Answer: Michael Leighton

Leighton was the last goalie to lead the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010. In that same seasons playoffs he helped the Flyers achieve the near impossible by coming back from a 3 games to none deficit to defeat the Boston Bruins 4-3. At that time the Flyers were only the 3rd NHL team to accomplish this feat( 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs & 1975 NY Islanders) and only the 4th team in all 4 major sports to accomplish this (the 2004 Boston Red Sox came back from 3-0 to defeat the Yankees in the American League Championship Series).

In 2014 the LA Kings joined this exclusive club when they came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the San Jose Sharks on their way to their 2nd Stanley Cup. .
7. 33

Answer: Pete Peeters

Peeters was called up for a few games in 1979 after an eye injury ended Bernie Parent's career. In 1979-80 season, Peeters' first full season, he shared goaltending duties with Phil Myre. During a 35 game stretch the 2 goalies combined for a 25-0-10 record for a 35 game unbeaten streak which still remains as the longest unbeaten streak in American sports history.
8. 79

Answer: Carter Hart

Hart appeared to be having a very promising NHL career but his 2023-24 season was cut short due to legal troubles in London, Ontario Canada. Before he left the team in 2024 he compiled a 96-93-29 record and a 2.94 goals against average.
9. 29

Answer: Ray Emery

Ray Emery was signed by the Flyers for the 2009-2010 season, although he was playing very well he developed a rare bone disease that ended his season early. After stints in Anaheim and Chicago he returned to Philadelphia for 2 more seasons. Sadly Ray passed away in 2018 due to an accidental drowning.
10. 34

Answer: John Vanbiesbrouck

"Beezer" joined the Flyers for the 1998-99 season and played 2 seasons in Philly. While he played well, he was often shaky in the playoffs including when the Flyers blew a 3 games to 1 lead over the NJ Devils in the 2000 Eastern Conference Finals.
