The beneficiary of Snodgrass' error, pinch-hitter Clyde Engle, later scored the tying run on a hit by Tris Speaker, and Steve Yerkes then scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Larry Gardner.

Another goat in that memorable game was Giants third baseman Freddie Lindstrom, who made a crucial error on a ground ball.

Two of Peckinpaugh's errors came in the seventh game, allowing the Pirates 4 unearned runs and giving them a come-from-behind 9-7 win. This series was noteworthy in that it was the first time a team had come from a 3-1 deficit in games to win a Series.

Ruth had walked with two out in the bottom of the ninth with the Yanks trailing 3-2. He tried to steal second to get into scoring position, and was thrown out.

The once obscure Auker gained fame after the turn of the 21st century when he became known as the last living pitcher who had faced Babe Ruth. His reputation was further enhanced when he published his memoirs, "Sleeper Cars and Flannel Uniforms," at the age of 90, and in it he made no bones about his preference for depression-era baseball, and his disdain for today's game. Mr. Auker died in 2006 at the age of 95.

The real goat here is Cubs manager Charley Grimm, who chose to start Borowy even though Borowy had pitched 5+ innings in game 5, and 4 innings in game 6. The Chicago press had a field day criticizing Grimm over this ill-conceived decision.

Answer: Johnny Pesky

After the Red Sox finally broke their long drought and won the Series in 2004, star pitcher Curt Schilling graciously dedicated the victory to all the past Red Sox players, specifically mentioning "goats" Johnny Pesky and Bill Buckner, saying that "now we can remember them for the great players they were", and not just for a single (mis)play.

Terry achieved redemption 2 years later when he pitched a complete game shutout in game 7 of the 1962 Series against the Giants. The other choices also pitched for the Yanks in that historic game. Mickey Mantle was later quoted as saying that losing the 1960 Series was the biggest disappointment of his career.

The oddity about that Series is that the Yanks lost despite outscoring the Pirates 55-27.

Answer: Yogi Berra

Keane was the Cardinals manager, who resigned and was then hired by the Yankees to replace Berra. Houk was the General Manager who fired Berra, and many feel he had planned to do so since the infamous Phil Linz harmonica incident on the team bus, when Berra told Linz to stop playing and then smacked it out of Linz's hand when he didn't stop. Yogi's infamous 14-year feud with the Yankees did not stem from this firing, but rather from being fired by owner George Steinbrenner 3 weeks into the 1985 season. Berra vowed never to return to Yankees Stadium as long as Steinbrenner owned the team.

It took a deathbed request by Joe DiMaggio to Steinbrenner to heal the rift. DiMaggio asked Steinbrenner to apologize to Yogi, which he did and Yogi made an emotional return to Yankee Stadium in 1999.

The Cardinals got blown out 11-0 in game 7, with the Royals coasting behind their ace, Bret Saberhagen.

The noise at the Metrodome was so deafening players had to use hand signals to communicate. To me this is contrary to the spirit of baseball, hence the Metrodome gets the nod as the "goat" in this Series.

Pendleton was the Brave who hit the double, while Gant and Bream were the Braves who failed to drive in Smith from 3rd. Even with Smith stopping at 3rd, the Braves still had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, so it certainly looked like the run was going to score regardless of Smith's baserunning gaffe. But he didn't and the rest, as they say, is history.

Luis Gonzalez was able to loft a ball just over the drawn-in infield for the series-ending hit.

Despite tying for the league lead in losses during the regular season with 16, Hernandez was picked to start game seven based on his reputation as a great postseason pitcher earned during the 1997 postseason when he was the World Series MVP for the Marlins. However, Hernandez was chased in the 3rd inning. The other choices also pitched for the Giants in that game.
