Question 5 of 10
5. Due to being part of a six-horse mutual wagering bet, this horse was not the longest-priced Kentucky Derby winner ever. Had people been asked to bet on him alone, he might have broken the record set in 1913. His futures odds were set at 500-1 just a few weeks before he won the 1971 Derby, becoming in the process the first horse raised in a foreign country and the first horse who had raced 1-1/4 mile previously to win. What horse pulled the shocker two weeks before he also won the Preakness Stakes in 1971? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. In 1973, Secretariat was the heavy favorite heading into the Wood Memorial Stakes, where he would finish third. His stablemate won the race, handing an ill Secretariat his first defeat since his very first race. Who was this horse that beat Secretariat just weeks before the Kentucky Derby? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. 22 days after he became the first horse to win the Triple Crown without ever having lost a race, Seattle Slew ran in the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park. However, he raced poorly, finishing fourth, 16 lengths behind the winner. The winner ran the 1-1/4 miles in 1:58 3/5, only 2/5 of a second shy of a world record. What horse that would end up losing to Seattle Slew a total of 9 times in 10 lifetime meetings won the first race that Seattle Slew ever lost? Hint

He held the lead entering the top of the stretch, but started falling back, eventually jumping the rail and tumbling into the infield. Luckily, he was not injured and, after losing his next race, won the final 18 races of his career. What horse won the race at Saratoga to give Niatross his first career defeat? Hint

Question 9 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1913, this horse pulled the biggest Kentucky Derby upset of the century. Going off at 91-1 odds, what horse not just won the race, but set a track record in completing the 1-1/4 mile race in 2:04 4/5?

Answer: Donerail

His record time wouldn't last all that long. The following year, Old Rosebud won the Kentucky Derby in 2:03 2/5.
2. In 1999, Blood-Horse released a list of the 100 greatest North American horses of the century. The horse that came in #1 on the list had won 20 of his 21 lifetime races, losing only once. Who was the horse that came in #1 on the list and what horse upset him in his only defeat?

Answer: Man O' War - Upset

The Sanford Memorial Stakes started while Man O' War was still circling behind the starting line. Man O' War was closing fast at the end, but still lost by half a length. Man won 9 of 10 races as a 2 year old and 20 of 21 in his lifetime. He defeated Triple Crown winner Sir Barton in a match race. Colin never retired, making him one of two major North American horses to retire undefeated in the 20th century (Personal Ensign in 1988 was the other).
3. In 1930, Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox shipped to Saratoga for the Travers Stakes, a race that was at the time as prestigious as the Triple Crown races and much more historic. He was, however, upset by this horse that went off at 99-1 odds. What horse now has a race at Saratoga named after him that is a prep race for the Travers?

Answer: Jim Dandy

Gallant Fox retired a few months after the race and became the only Triple Crown winner in the century to sire another Triple Crown winner when Omaha won the Belmont Stakes to complete the sweep in 1935.
4. Native Dancer almost managed an unblemished career record, losing only the Kentucky Derby by a neck from 22 lifetime races. What horse whose odds stood at just shy of 25-1 stunned the Grey Ghost on the first Saturday of May in 1953?

Answer: Dark Star

Native Dancer would win the Preakness three weeks later, defeating Jamie K. by a neck. The Preakness was his second win in a row, as he won the Withers Mile at Belmont the week before the Preakness, two weeks after his defeat in the Kentucky Derby.

Answer: Canonero II

Canonero II, who trained in Venezuela, went off as part of a six-horse mutual field at 15-1, but managed to pull the shocker. He then went on to win the Preakness before losing in the Belmont.

Answer: Angle Light

Angle Light didn't do much before or after. Secretariat? He went on to win the Triple Crown, breaking the Kentucky Derby time record and shattering the world record for 1 1/2 miles in 2:24, a time that would stand throughout the rest of the century.
7. 22 days after he became the first horse to win the Triple Crown without ever having lost a race, Seattle Slew ran in the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Answer: J.O. Tobin

J.O. Tobin won the race in front of 68,115 spectators, one of the largest crowds in Hollywood Park had ever seen. Affiliate finished second and Text was third.
8. Niatross had never lost in 19 career pacing races before heading up to Saratoga the day after Indepedence Day in 1980. He held the lead entering the top of the stretch, but started falling back, eventually jumping the rail and tumbling into the infield. Luckily, he was not injured and, after losing his next race, won the final 18 races of his career. What horse won the race at Saratoga to give Niatross his first career defeat?

Answer: Trenton Time

In his following race, a trial for the Meadowlands Pace, Niatross went off stride at the beginning. He recovered to miraculously finish fourth, good enough to qualify for the final. Despite losing, many people believe that to be his most impressive performance. Niatross won the Meadowlands Pace final, which was at the time the richest race ever for pacers.

He would never lose again, retiring with 37 wins in 39 lifetime races. His loss at Saratoga remains a mystery as it was obvious to anyone watching that for some reason, he didn't fire that day.

He was about to drop into third in the home stretch before he jumped the rail.
9. Of all the major horse racing upsets of the 20th century, none in North America came close to the 1993 Breeders' Cup Classic when what foreign horse won at odds of 133-1?

Answer: Arcangues

Volponi pulled an upset in the 2002 Breeders' Cup Classic, but not on the same level as Arcangues did in 1993. Arcangues, who was ridden by Jerry Bailey during the race, never did duplicate the feat and was retired to stud after a disappointing 1994 campaign.
10. In 1996, Cigar attempted to break Citation and Mister Frisky's record of 16 consecutive victories in North America when he was shipped to Del Mar for the Pacific Classic. However, he was denied by what horse, who went off at just shy of 40-1 odds?

Answer: Dare And Go

Alphabet Soup and Louis Quatorze would both upset Cigar two months later in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Holy Bull pulled up lame in 1995 in the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park, a race Cigar won, and was retired to stud. Many people have argued that Cigar would have never approached 16 consecutive wins had Holy Bull not gotten injured.
