Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

In ice hockey, there are different levels of infraction, including minor penalties for 'small' things, major penalties for more severe actions, and depending on the infraction, a player can also receive a misconduct penalty (10 minutes), or be ejected from the game entirely (match penalty or game misconduct).

Minor penalties, as noted above, are the least severe of the infractions, and when a player has been 'awarded' a penalty for their actions, they must sit in the penalty box for two minutes. While they are in the box, the opposing team has an advantage of having more players on the ice, resulting in a 'power play' while the offending side attempts to 'penalty kill.' If the team on the power play scores during this time, the penalty is ended immediately, and the penalized player may return to the game. Sometimes, players receive offsetting penalties, and neither side has an advantage. Depending on the rules, this could result in 4-on-4 play for a time.

The minor penalties from this quiz collection include:

BOARDING - a hit that causes a player to go into the boards dangerously
CHARGING - a hit on a player that is like a regular check, but is defined by the distance and speed traveled before the hit - usually defined as 'three skating strides', but is at the ref's discretion
CROSS-CHECKING - when the shaft of the stick is used between two hands to forcefully hit
DELAY OF GAME - for when a player is intentionally stalling the game
ELBOWING - as it sounds, typically to the head
HIGH-STICKING - striking a player above the shoulders with the stick (intentional or not)
HOLDING - impeding a player's progress by grabbing at their jersey, body, head, hands, or stick.
HOOKING - using the stick to impede a player's progress (as it sounds)
INTERFERENCE - usually regards interfering with the goalie's ability to play unimpeded, but can also be called for impeding another player on the ice when they do not have the puck
ROUGHING - not quite fighting, but usually a punch or shove, and often after play has been whistled down
SLASHING - swinging a stick at a player, usually contacting their hand or stick
TOO MANY MEN - as it sounds... more players on the ice than should be - usually happens during an exchange when a player coming off the bench touches the puck before the player they are replacing is off the ice
TRIPPING (aka SLEW FOOT) - when someone is intentionally tripped (by use of stick or other means)

Other minor penalties include: kneeing, contact to the head, obstruction, holding the stick, and unsportsmanlike conduct

*** Depending on if the infraction prevented the possibility of a breakaway, a penalty shot could be granted instead of a 2-minute penalty***

Major penalties are more severe and come with a 5-minute timeout in the penalty box, and unlike minor penalties, these do not expire if the opposing team scores on their advantage. The offending team must play the entire 5 minutes short-handed.

The major penalties from this quiz collection include:

FIGHTING - as it sounds, often accompanied with a game misconduct of some level
SPEARING - using the blade of the stick to spear into someone, dangerously

Other major penalties include: butt-ending, checking from behind, fight instigating, holding/grasping the facemask, pushing-off opponent with skate, leaving the bench during an altercation, and any of the minor penalties deemed severe enough to warrant major-penalty status

Misconduct penalties are generally granted for objectionable behaviour or for a more severe penalty that doesn't quite warrant being ejected from the game (referee's discretion). Players serving the 10-minute penalty sit in the penalty box during this time, but the team is not short-handed like with the minor and major penalties.

Game misconduct penalties (match penalties) will eject a player from the rest of the game, and are for more severe infractions than what would grant a regular misconduct penalty (again, referee's discretion).

--------------------------

The non-ice hockey penalties:

OFFSIDE - this happens in hockey, but is not a penalty, only resulting in a stoppage of play and a new faceoff, outside of the defending team's end.
ENCROACHMENT - a penalty in American football
BALK - a penalty in baseball
FAULT - in tennis or volleyball, when making an error on a serve
TACKLING - a penalty in soccer, if severe or dangerous
