Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which NFL team lost the 1972 Super Bowl only to come back and win the 1973 Super Bowl and complete the season with a perfect record?

Answer: Miami Dolphins

In 1972, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-3. The following year, the Dolphins defeated the Washington Redskins 14-7. This left the Dolphins with an undefeated 14-0 season. Despite this, the Dolphins were largely considered underdogs going into the Super Bowl because of their loss in the prior Super Bowl.
2. Which MLB team suffered from the Curse of the Bambino that caused it to lose four World Series appearances after selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1920, until it finally won in 2004?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

The Curse of the Bambino came about in 1920 when the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. Prior to this, the Red Sox were seen as a powerhouse in baseball having won five prior championships to which Babe Ruth was considered essential.

However when Babe Ruth was sold, the Red Sox fortunes plummeted. The team did not make another World Series appearance until 1946. They lost three other subsequent World Series finals until they finally won it 2004 by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals.
3. At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the USA finished second in the men's swimming 4 x 100m medley relay, losing the gold medal for the first time since the event was contested. Which country claimed the gold?

Answer: China

The United States had won the gold medal in the men'4 x 100m medley relay since the event debuted in 1960, with the exception of 1980 when the U.S. boycotted the Olympics in Moscow. Prior to the 2024 Paris Olympics, controversy surrounded the Chinese swimming team. Dozens of Chinese swimmers had previously tested positive for banned substances but it was later revealed their samples had been contaminated and those who had been banned were reinstated.

This did nothing to relieve allegations of doping amongst the Chinese swimmers. China upset the U.S. in the event, claiming the gold by roughly a half a second. Because of the U.S. loss in this event, swimmer Caleb Dressel broke his streak of gold medal wins.

He had won 9 medals in previous events and Games, all of them gold, with this medal breaking that trend with a silver.
4. Once dominant in the event, the USA suffered a series of catastrophic failures in the men's 4 x 100m sprint relay at the Olympic Games. In which year did both the men and the women's team drop the baton and fail to even make the finals?

Answer: 2008: Beijing

The U.S. often comes into the event as the favorite and the top qualifier in the preliminary rounds. However beginning in 2008, the U.S. failed to medal in the men's 4 x 100 m relay for five straight Olympics due to a series of baton disqualifications from dropping it to making illegal passes to passing outside of the designated area.

In 2008, both the men and the women's team dropped the baton during a pass which led to instant disqualifications.
5. Three of the first four WNBA Finals were contested between the Houston Comets and the New York Liberty. Which team lost all of three of these matchups?

Answer: New York Liberty

The first WNBA finals occurred in 1997 when the Comets defeated the Liberty 65-51 in the one-game final. They also defeated the Liberty in 1999 and 2000, winning two games to one and then two games to zero. The Comets also won the 1998 WNBA Championship but the team defeated the Phoenix Mercury. The New York Liberty would go on to lose the WNBA final in 2002 and 2023 as well.
6. Which short-lived NHL team was the first U.S. team to play for the Stanley Cup, a tournament they ultimately lost to the Montreal Canadiens in 1916?

9. In 1957, the Little League team from La Mesa, California became the first American team to finish as a runner up to a foreign nation in the tournament, when they lost the final game to a team from which country?

Answer: Mexico

The Little League World Series was dominated by teams from the USA in the decade following its founding in 1947. In fact despite its name, international teams did not begin playing in the league until 1952. 10. Which American swimmer lost the gold medal in the 100m butterfly in an upset at the 1988 Summer Olympics, by one one-hundredth of a second, and then proceeded to win the gold in five subsequent events?
