1999-2000 was the first season the Mountain West Conference participated in sporting events. The Mountain West Conference was a break off from the once 16-team Western Athletic Conference.

The original teams in the MWC were Air Force, BYU, Colorado St, University of New Mexico, San Diego St, UNLV, University of Utah, and Wyoming. Then in 2005, TCU became a part of the MWC bringing it to a 9-team conference.

In 2007, UNLV made its reappearance in the NCAA Tournament, beating Georgia Tech and Wisconsin making it to the sweet sixteen for the first time since 1991. The four times UNLV had been to the final four was in 1977, 1987, 1990, and 1991.
