1. Which of Sheikh Mohammed's favourite stallions died from grass sickness after only one breeding season?

Answer: Dubai Millennium

The Sheikh said that this was the best horse he had ever owned or seen. He won the Dubai World Cup in 2000 and although he did not win the English Derby, he did win 9 out of his 10 races. After his first season at stud where he covered over 65 mares, he contracted the often incurable grass sickness disease.

Inspite of two operations, he was not responding to treatment and Sheikh Mohammed agreed to this lovely stallion being allowed to die peacefully whilst under anaesthetic to avoid further suffering.

The Sheikh made every attempt to buy all the first and only crop of foals sired by Dubai Millennium.
2. Which 1987 Derby and St. Leger winning stallion broke his leg in a paddock accident at Dalham Hall Stud in 1991?

Answer: Reference Point

This successful Mill Reef stallion was found in his stud exercise paddock with a broken leg in 1991. He sadly had to be put down and is now in the stallion burial area at Dalham Hall Stud.
3. Who was the unlucky owner of Banstead Manor Stud, when his hot favourite Dancing Brave failed to win the English Derby in 1986?

Answer: Prince Khaled Abdullah

Banstead Manor stud in the pretty village of Cheveley has been the home to many top stallions. Dancing Brave went on to win the Prix de l'Arc, the Triomphe the same year, and then retired to stud in Newmarket. He sadly had the rare Marie's Disease which almost killed him in 1987.

He was sold to a stud in Japan in 1990 before his progeny showed success in ensuing years, including Derby winner Commander in Chief and 30 other stakes winners.

Egerton Stud (next door to the National Stud) is was the training yard for David Elsworth. It was famous in the times of Edward VII when owned by the Earls of Harewood and stood some famous stallions, including Brigadier Gerard, Royal Palace, Abernant and Owen Tudor, over the ensuing years.
5. Which Derby winning Newmarket trainer was murdered by his stud groom at Glebe Stud in 1994?

Answer: Alex Scott

Alex Scott trained Lamtarra to win the Derby whilst at Gainsborough Stables. He had a long running dispute with his stud groom who lay in wait for him one evening and shot him dead with a shotgun. There is now an Alex Scott memorial race held at Newmarket racecourse each year. His assistant trainer, Ed Dunlop, took over the training "reins" with Lamtarra winning the Derby in 1995.

The National Stud is the showcase for British Thoroughbred breeding. It stands in 500 acres of peaceful pastureland at the southern entrance to Newmarket and next to the July Racecourse. It has stood many famous stallions over the years, the most well known of which has to be Mill Reef. It currently stands Cockney Rebel, Bahamian County and Silver Patriach, among others. It also has a stud staff training scheme for students from all other the world.

Hascombe and Valient Studs in Ashley are two of the prettiest studs in the area. White painted, South African style thatched buildings house their band of brood mares and young stock. They have also bred the winner of the Eclipse Stakes with Compton Admiral, and the Queen Elizabeth II stakes with Summoner.

The Godolphin training stables and gallops had been developed by Sheikh Mohammed over the past 5 years. Most of the top horses overwinter in Dubai and are shipped back to Newmarket each Spring. The complex is magnificent with its own training track and gallops, which rival those of the Jockey Club Estates on the neighbouring lands.
9. Which magnificent Newmarket stud stands the 2007 Derby winner, Authorized?

Answer: Dalham Hall Stud

The purpose built Dalham Hall Stud is owned by Darley Stud Management (Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai). It has stood many top stallions including Authorized, Echo of Light, Halling, Red Ransom. Past residents have been the ill fated Dubai Millennium and Reference Point.
10. Which successful commercial stud near Kentford is owned and run by Swedish millionnairess Kirsten Rausing?

Answer: Lanwades Stud

Kirsten Rausing is one of the richest women in the UK. She runs both Landwades and St. Simon Stud, standing the stallions Hernando, Selkirk and the handsome Sir Percy. She is one of the few women members of the Jockey Club and is a familiar figure driving around Newmarket in her ancient Mercedes.
