Overall, he was a bust as the first choice ever. In 1969, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in a deal that saw 1963 second choice overall, Pete Mahovlich, come to Montreal.

The Little M went on to win four Stanley Cups with the Habs and score 773 points in 884 regular season games. Monahan never sipped champagne from the Cup. McKechnie and Meehan were also chosen in the 1963 draft both by the Toronto Maple Leafs, and went on to have solid NHL careers.

Patrik Stefan ended up a major bust, scoring only 188 points in 455 regular season games. He played six seasons with the Thrashers and one with the Stars before leaving the NHL for good after the 2006-07 season. The Sedin twins were still going strong as the premier forwards on the Vancouver Canucks, who drafted them 2nd and 3rd overall in the 1999 draft. Pavel Brendl was taken fourth overall by the New York Rangers in the same draft, and was even a bigger bust then Stefan, scoring only 22 points in 78 regular season games before ending his NHL career.

3. In the 1993 Draft, the Ottawa Senators took this Quebec Major Junior Hockey League phenom with visions of him leading them to a Stanley Cup. Which player did they choose?

Answer: Alexandre Daigle

Alexandre Daigle never lived up to his promise of being the next Mario Lemieux. He bounced around with six NHL teams including the Sens scoring only 327 points in 616 regular season games. His work ethic and character were questioned repeatedly but teams kept giving him chances due to his obvious hockey skills.

He left the NHL for good after the 2005/2006 season. Gratton taken third overall by Tampa Bay also was a bust but did enjoy a very long journeyman career retiring after the 2008/2009 NHL season. Lecompte was taken twenty-fourth overall in the first round by Chicago and Charbonneau was taken fifty-third overall in the third round also by Ottawa. Neither played a game in the NHL.

4. In the 1994 NHL Draft, the Edmonton Oilers took future captain Ryan Smyth with the sixth overall pick in the first round. The Oilers also had an earlier fourth overall pick. Which player did they choose?

Answer: Jason Bonsignore

Jason Bonsignore played only 21 games with the Oilers, scoring three points before being traded to Tampa Bay where he played another 58 games scoring 13 points before exiting the NHL. The Oilers chose Mike Watt 32nd overall in the second round of the 1994 draft.

He played only 14 of his 157 NHL games with Edmonton. Moreau was chosen by Chicago later in the first round, and Souray was chosen by New Jersey in the third round. Moreau was traded to the Oilers by the Blackhawks in 1999. Souray signed as a free agent with the Oilers in 2007.

5. In 1979, the NHL changed the name of the draft from the Amateur Draft to the Entry Draft. Which player did the Colorado Rockies (later the New Jersey Devils) pick with the first overall pick?

Answer: Rob Ramage

Rob Ramage played professionally for the Birmingham Bulls of the now defunct World Hockey Association the year prior to being drafted in the NHL Entry Draft. He was one of a number of amateur players who played in the WHA that year because they were deemed to be too young to qualify for the 1978 NHL draft. Ramage went on to be a NHL captain, playing over 1000 regular season games. Turnbull was chosen second overall by St. Louis, Foligno third overall by Detroit, and Gartner fourth overall by Washington. All three had solid NHL careers.

The Boston Bruins chose Dryden and then traded him along with Alex Campbell to Montreal for Paul Reid and Guy Allen. All the players involved in the deal were chosen in the 1964 draft. Only Dryden ever played in the NHL.

Cheveldayoff and Kocur were picked in the first round respectively by the Islanders and Red Wings, and Duval in the second round by the Rangers, and none of them played in even one game in the NHL.

With the 15th pick overall, the Buffalo Sabres took this Russian forward whose best season in the Russian Hockey League had him compile only 17 points in 60 games. He did not even get a sniff at the NHL. The Sabres could have taken his Russian teammate and solid NHL scorer Alexander Frolov instead.

The Los Angeles Kings chose Frolov 20th overall in the first round of the same draft. Ovechkin was a NHL superstar forward with the Washington Capitals. Bure was a retired former NHL superstar. Perezhogin was chosen in the first round twenty-fifth overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens.

He played 128 games for them prior to returning to play in Russia following the 2006-07 NHL season.

9. Future NHL superstar and then Quebec Major Junior Hockey League phenom Denis Savard, was taken third overall in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. 10. NHL prima-donna scorer Dany Heatley demanded a trade from the Ottawa Senators during the 2009 summer offseason. Eventually, his wish was granted and he was traded to the San Jose Sharks. Dany Heatley was chosen second overall in the first round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers. Following the 2002-03 season, the Thrashers were starting to resemble a team on the rise with offensive talents like Heatley, Ilya Kovalchuk, Vyacheslav Kozlov, and Mark Savard. That all changed on September 30, 2003, when Heatley crashed his car while speeding and killing his friend and teammate Dan Snyder.

Heatley suffered serious injuries in the accident and missed most of the 2003-04 NHL season playing only 31 games during the second half of the season. Atlanta did not qualify for the playoffs, and Heatley did not play another game for the Thrashers as the team met his request for a trade by sending him to the Ottawa Senators for Marian Hossa.
