Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. United States
Answer: White
The United States Men's soccer team played in Group B in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup. After tying with both Wales and England, the USA narrowly defeated Iran and qualified to the knockout stage. They faced the Netherlands in an exciting Round of 16 match. Despite a goal by Haji Wright, the USA lost 3-1 to the "Oranje" and were eliminated from the competition.
The USA wore their traditional white uniform to their Round of 16 match. Their away kit was a flashier blue kit, which they used in their matches against England and Iran.
2. Argentina
Answer: White
Led by superstar Lionel Messi, Argentina began the race for the trophy with a shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia. But the South American nation recovered and won its other two Group C matches, against Mexico and Poland, advancing as first place of the group. The "Albicelestes" faced a tough Round of 16 match against Australia, but prevailed. Argentina would then beat the Netherlands in a penalty shootout, and subsequently beat Croatia 3-0 in the semi-finals. On December 18, Argentina and France contested what was regarded by many as one of the greatest World Cup finals in history. Argentina emerged victorious and Messi finally got to lift the coveted trophy.
Argentina wore their classic white and light blue striped shirt, which matches the country's flag, to most of their matches. The only time that Argentina wore its dark blue away kit in Qatar was during the group stage match against Poland.
3. South Korea
Answer: Red
South Korea drew an extremely difficult group at the 2022 World Cup, as it competed in Group H against Portugal, Uruguay, and Ghana. Despite a 0-0 draw with Uruguay and a 2-3 loss to Ghana, South Korea managed to beat Portugal with a last-minute goal by Hwang Hee-chan. This dramatic goal meant South Korea would progress from the group stage while Uruguay would be eliminated, due to the number of goals scored by each squad. Unfortunately for the Asian squad, their World Cup journey came to an end in the Round of 16 match, where they lost 4-1 to Brazil.
South Korea wore its fully red home kit to every single match in the 2022 World Cup, which meant it could not show off its colorful away kit at the tournament.
4. England
Answer: White
An England team of mostly young players, led by manager Gareth Southgate, had a successful group stage at the 2022 World Cup. England began the tournament with a devastating 6-2 win against Iran, followed by a tie with the USA, and a 3-0 victory over Wales. The "Three Lions" then beat Senegal 3-0 in the Round of 16, but were eliminated by France in the quarter-finals.
Despite having a sleek red away kit, England decided to wear their traditional white jersey to all its World Cup matches.
5. Poland
Answer: White
Poland was placed in Group C for the Qatar World Cup. The Europeans began with a 0-0 tie against Mexico, which could've been a Polish win but for a missed penalty by striker Robert Lewandowski. Poland then beat Saudi Arabia 2-0, and then lost by the same score to Argentina. Because Mexico couldn't score more goals in its match against Saudi Arabia, Poland progressed to the knockout stage. The Poles would go on to lose to France 3-1 in the Round of 16.
Poland wore its white jersey in every World Cup match that the country played.
6. Morocco
Answer: Red
Morocco was one of the most surprising stories of the 2022 World Cup. The African squad started the tournament with a 0-0 tie to Croatia, but then won the next two matches against Belgium and Canada. These two victories placed them at the top of Group F. After a rather lacklustre Round of 16 match against Spain, which ended 0-0 and was decided in penalties, Morocco faced Portugal in the quarter-finals. Morocco surprised the world by winning 1-0 and earning a ticket to the semi-finals against France. Though Morocco would lose the semi-final, and then again lose the third-place match to Croatia, the team still had a memorable performance.
Morocco wore their home red jersey to most of their World Cup matches. The exceptions were their games against Belgium and Canada, where the team wore their white kits instead to avoid confusion with the other countries' colors.
7. Portugal
Answer: Both
Qatar 2022 was superstar Cristiano Ronaldo's last World Cup. Unfortunately, Ronaldo could not add the Cup to his list of accomplishments. Portugal defeated Ghana and Uruguay in the group stage, which was enough to put them at the top of Group H and allow them to advance despite their last-minute loss to South Korea. Portugal then convincingly defeated Switzerland by 6-1 at the Round of 16, but then lost to Morocco by 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
Portugal's home kit was a mix of dark red and green, while its away jersey was white. The home kit was used in the group stage matches against Ghana and Uruguay, as well as in the Round of 16 game against Switzerland. For its matches against South Korea and Morocco, Portugal used its white away kit, as it was booked as the away team for both games.
8. Switzerland
Answer: White
Switzerland had become a tough team to beat in modern World Cup history, and the 2022 World Cup's group stage was no exception. The Swiss began by beating Cameroon 1-0. Despite a single-goal loss to Brazil, the Alpine squad defeated Serbia by 3-2. Both Brazil and Switzerland ended with 6 points, but Brazil's higher goal difference placed the "Cariocas" at the top of their group. Switzerland's opponent in the Round of 16 was Portugal, and that match ended with a crushing 6-1 Portuguese win.
Switzerland's home kit was red, while their away kit was white. The Swiss wore red to their matches against Cameroon and Brazil, while their white away kits were used in the game against Serbia, and in their only knockout stage match against Portugal.
9. Croatia
Answer: White
There were high expectations for Croatia given that they were the runner-up at the Russia 2018 World Cup. Known for its defensive style, Croatia had two goalless ties in its Group F matches against Morocco and Belgium. However, the Balkan country's 4-1 win against Canada put them in second place in the group and through the KO round of 16. Croatia would go on to knock out both Japan and Brazil in penalty shoot-outs. The journey came to an end when Argentina beat Croatia 3-0 in the semi-final. Still, Croatia took third-place medals back home by beating Morocco.
Croatia wore its traditional home kit, a white shirt with red squares, to all but one of its World Cup matches. The exception was the semi-final against Argentina, where the Croatians wore a blue jersey.
10. Referees (final)
Answer: Red
Though many teams had red or white kits (or both!), only nine of them wore one or both of these colors during the 2022 World Cup knockout stage. For example, France did not use its white jersey, while Spain decided to use a light blue shirt against Morocco instead of its traditional red uniform. Thankfully, the referees rescued this 10-question quiz!
Red was only one of many colors that the referees wore to the 2022 World Cup. Most of the officials were dressed in either black or yellow for knockout stage matches, though red was fairly popular too. Salvadorian referee Ivan Barton and his team dressed in red for the England v Senegal Round of 16 match, as did American referee Ismail Elfath for the Japan-Croatia Round of 16 game. The Brazilian referee team headed by Wilson Sampaio was also in red for the England-France quarter-final. No white jersey was used by any referee during the tournament.
Lastly, red was the chosen color for officials to wear in the final between Argentina and France. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak, his two Polish assistant referees, and fourth official Ismail Elfath, used red jerseys to officiate the final.
