Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On day one of the 2014 Sochi Olympics, the three Dufour-Lapointe sisters from Montréal competed in the same freestyle skiing event. Two of them medalled, receiving Gold and Silver. In which event did they accomplish this?

Answer: Moguls

Gold-medal winning Justine Dufour-Lapointe is the youngest of the three sisters, aged 19 at the time of the Games. Her next older sister, Chloé (22), took home the Silver, while their older sibling, Maxime (25), was eliminated after the second (of three) runs.

In the first two runs Justine was chasing her sister Chloé in the standings. Of the 20 competitors (12 qualifying) in run number one, Chloé, Justine and Maxime finished 3rd, 4th and 11th respectively. In run number two (six qualifying), Chloé, Justine and Maxime came in 2nd, 3rd, and 12th respectively. The final run saw Justine edge out her sister to take the Gold with the highest-scoring run of the day (74.80%).

Kearney Hannah of the U.S.A. took the Bronze.
2. Day three of Sochi saw four Canadians competing in the Men's Moguls. Two of them made the podium as they won the Gold and Silver medals. Who was the Gold medal winner, who successfully defended his crown from the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver?

Answer: Alexandre Bilodeau

It was very nearly a Canadian podium sweep as Bilodeau, Kingsbury and Gagnon finished one, two and four respectively. But for Bilodeau, it was a shaky start.

Twenty competitors made the first run, with only 12 able to qualify to the second round. Canadians Marquis, Kingsbury and Gagnon made the second, third and fourth best runs respectively, while Bilodeau was down at number eight. The second run (six qualifying) saw Bilodeau move up the ranks as Kingsbury, Gagnon and Bilodeau made the top three runs, while Marquis found himself eliminated, finishing in 9th place. The final run had Bilodeau blow away the competition with a score of 87.70% (the highest of the day), with Kingsbury scoring 82.36% for the Silver, and Russian Alexandr Smyshlyaev taking the Bronze.
3. Charles Hamelin participated in four different short track speed skating events in Sochi. In which one of them, on day three of competition, did Charles win the Gold?

Answer: 1500m

Charles Hamelin was a favourite to win multiple medals, but was only able to bring home one; a Gold in the 1500m where he narrowly beat out Tianyu Han (Silver) of China and Victor An (Bronze) of Russia.

In his other events, Hamelin did not fare as well. The 500m race saw him fall during his heat 8 qualifying race, and he also fell in his 1000m quarterfinal as he was coming around the final turn (in second place). In the 5000m relay, Hamelin, along with teammates Charle Cournoyer, Michael Gilday and Olivier Jean, won the B final. Unfortunately, the B final was not a medal event, and the Canadian team was unable to defend their Gold from Vancouver.
4. Day four of the Olympics saw Canadians win Gold and Bronze in one of the 12 new additions to the Sochi Games. In which sport did Dara Howell (Gold) and Kim Lamarre (Bronze) compete?

Answer: Ski Slopestyle

Dara Howell achieved a score of 94.20 on her first (of two) runs in ski slopestyle, and that score was able to hold on for a Gold medal win for the 19-year-old from Huntsville, Ontario. Kim Lamarre crashed on her first run, but pulled out an 85.00 on her second run to take the Bronze. Sandwiched in the middle with a score of 85.40 was Devin Logan (USA).

The 12 new events at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games were Ski Halfpipe (Men's and Women's), Ski Slopestyle (Men's and Women's), Snowboard Slopestyle (Men's and Women's), Snowboard Parallel Slalom (Men's and Women's), Women's Ski Jump, Biathlon Mixed Relay, Luge Team Relay, and the Figure Skating Team Event.
5. After achieving four Gold medals in the first four days of competition, Canada did not win another Gold until day 12 when Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse slid into first place in Women's Bobsled. By how much time did they win?

Answer: 0.10 seconds

The Canadian Women won Gold in Vancouver by a comparatively wide margin of 0.85 seconds over the second-place (also) Canadian Silver medallists. In 2014, though, the defending Olympic champions were trailing behind the United States 1 team (Elana Meyers and Lauryn Williams) through the first three runs. Fortunately for the Canadians, the American team made some errors on their final run, allowing the Humphries and Moyse to move from second to first.

The Canadians four runs were 57.39 seconds, 57.73 seconds, 57.57 seconds, and 57.92 seconds. After their third run, the Canadian team were trailing by 0.11 seconds.

Third place Bronze was claimed by the United States 2 sled (Jamie Greubel and Aja Evans).
6. Sochi day 13 was definitely not unlucky for Canada's athletes as two Gold medals were earned. The first was in Women's Curling, with Team Canada skipped by Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones. What was their final win-loss record, including the round robin matches?

Answer: 11-0

Jennifer Jones, Kaitlyn Lawes, Jill Officer and Dawn McEwen made Olympic history by winning every match in the tournament, going a perfect 11 and 0. It was Canada's first Gold in Women's Curling since Sandra Schmirler's rink won in Nagano in 1998.

After going a perfect 9-0 in the round robin, Canada faced Great Britain in the semifinals, defeating them 6 to 4. They followed this up with a 6 to 3 win over Sweden in the Gold medal match.

In the Bronze medal match, Great Britain beat Switzerland 6 to 5.
7. Canada's second Gold on day 13 of Sochi 2014 came with Canada's victory over the United States in Women's Hockey. Who won her record-setting fourth Gold medal with the team?

Answer: Hayley Wickenheiser

Canada's Women's Hockey team came into Sochi with three consecutive Gold medals in 2002 (Salt Lake City), 2006 (Torino) and 2010 (Vancouver). In Nagano (1998) they took home the Silver, losing out to the Americans. It looked like Canada was going to lose out to the USA again, down 2 to 0 with less than five minutes left in regulation, but the Canadians mounted a late comeback, scoring twice with 3:26 and 0:55 left to play, sending the game to overtime.

At 8:10 of overtime, the Canadian women broke the hearts of the US team, claiming the Gold medal on a goal by Marie-Philip Poulin (who also tied the game).

Hayley Wickenheiser has been a part of each of Canada's medal-winning performances up to and including Sochi, along with teammate Jayna Hefford. Those two women, along with Caroline Ouellette (who did not play in Nagano), are the first Canadians to earn four Gold medals in Olympic competition (Summer and Winter combined).
8. Another freestyle double medal performance occurred on day 14 as Marielle Thompson claimed the Gold and Kelsey Serwa took Silver... in which event?

Answer: Ski Cross

Three Canadians began the Ski Cross competition (Thompson, Serwa and Georgia Simmerling), and all three of them made it through the qualifying stage, and the round of 16. Unfortunately, Simmerling fell in the quarterfinals, leaving only Thompson and Serwa to challenge for the podium, which they did.

In the final race, Thompson and Serwa were joined by Sweden's Anna Holmlund and France's Ophelie David. Holmlund claimed the Bronze behind the two Canadians.
9. Canada earned a second Gold medal on Sochi day 14 when the Men's Curling team won the final match. Who was their opponent in the Gold medal game?

Answer: Great Britain

Skipped by Brad Jacobs, the Canadian team included Ryan Fry and brothers E.J. and Ryan Harnden. They got off to a shaky start, winning only one of their first three games in the round robin and finishing second to Sweden in the standings.

Matched against China in the semifinal, Canada won handily by a 10 to 6 margin. They followed up with a powerful finish in the Gold medal match against Great Britain, winning with a 9 to 3 tally.

This was Canada's third Gold in a row in Men's Curling, following wins in 2006 (Turin) by Brad Gushue and in 2010 (Vancouver) by Kevin Martin.
10. The last day (16) of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi gave Canada their last opportunity to win Gold as they faced Sweden in the Men's Hockey Gold medal game. Did they win Canada's 10th Gold of the Games?

Answer: Yes

Canada's Men's Hockey team played a stellar tournament, allowing just three goals against in six games played. The games that counted the most were both shutouts: the semifinal against the USA 1 to 0; and the Gold Medal match against Sweden 3 to 0.

The three goals in this final game were scored by Jonathan Toews, Captain Sidney Crosby, and Chris Kunitz, each of them scoring their first (and only) goal of the tournament.
