Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Please note: The word clue when capitalized refers to one of "The 39 Clues." Otherwise it is just a minor clue to help find the real Clue. Now, on to the quiz! Immediately after arriving to their hotel room in London, England, Dan, Amy and Nellie receive an envelope with a message inside. They barely get a chance to read it when a hawk flies in through their 12th-floor hotel room and snatches it right out of Nellie's hand.

Answer: False

An animal does, in fact, come in through their hotel room window to steal the message, but it is not a hawk. Rather, it is a monkey that steals it, and leaves behind a thick metal coin with an elaborate 'K' stamped on it. When they look out the window to see where the monkey is going, they watch in dismay as it is collected into a waiting limousine.
2. The animal left behind a coin embossed with the letter K - representing the Kabras. Just as Amy figures out where their clue is leading them, Nellie stops her from speaking, realizing that the coin is, in fact, a listening device. They search the room and find three more bugs. Which Cahill branch's bug did they NOT find?

Answer: Madrigal

The Madrigal family branch, of which Amy and Dan are a part, had a listening device built right into the wall of the hotel room. Even though they are the same branch, the current leaders of the branch are still keen on keeping tabs on what is happening in the clue hunt, and their old habits of subterfuge and mistrust are not easily given up.
3. Amy determines that the clue points to William Shakespeare, and the trio go about securing tickets to the next production playing at the Globe Theatre. Which Shakespeare tragedy is playing?

Answer: Romeo and Juliet

When Dan realizes that they're going to have to go see a play, he is horrified. "Torture," Dan muttered. "Cruel and unusual punishment. Worse than poisonous snakes and spiders in Australia. Worse than almost being chopped up into lollipops in China. This has got to be the worst thing we've had to do yet!"
4. All the different teams converge on the Globe Theatre, including one team that had been out of commission since they got caught in an explosion in Philadelphia (way back in the first book). What team?

Answer: Starling

Of the Ekaterina branch of the Cahill family, the Starlings were injured in the explosion at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia that the Holt family had set for Amy and Dan.
5. When Ned, Ted and Sinead confront their fellow Ekat Alistair Oh about sharing clues, Alistair refuses. The siblings sneer at him about the help he has given Dan and Amy Cahill. Sinead asks, "How else would they have solved anything?" With which of these did Alistair NOT respond?

Answer: Cunning

"Integrity," Alistair said softly. "Courage. Intelligence. Daring. Hard work."

When confronted by Ned, Ted and Sinead, Alistair had been brooding to himself over the state of things between the Cahill family branches, and how he had let himself down, and also how he had repeatedly let down Amy and Dan.
6. What did Jonah Wizard have to do to provide a distraction for his mother to look for a clue?

Answer: Pretend to be a wax statue.

After coming away from the fracas at the Globe Theatre without a clue, Cora Wizard claimed that Jonah's heart was no longer in the Clue hunt. As a result, she took him to the police station to be identified as one of the people involved at the Globe, and threatened exposure of the incident to his adoring public if he didn't do things her way.

In order to give Cora a chance to look for a clue that she believed was hidden in the shoe of the wax statue of Shakespeare at Madame Tussauds, Jonah pretended to be one of the statues. Once he started to move, it drew crowds of starstruck fans.
7. The fragments of paper that Dan managed to save during the fight at the Globe Theatre gave them enough information to seek out Shakespeare's birthplace to look for their next clue. Where was Shakespeare born?

Answer: Stratford-upon-Avon

With the partial clue in hand, Dan, Amy and Nellie go the the house/museum where Shakespeare lived in Stratford-upon-Avon. Unable to find anything, they look again at their clue and realize that the line "For this great man we sing was b____ here" doesn't actually fit the rhythm of the sonnet that it is a part of. Believing "buried" to be the better word, they make their way to the Holy Trinity Church nearby.
8. The teams all converge once again, this time at Shakespeare's burial site - the Holy Trinity Church. Ian Kabra questions a couple of the other groups about their Clue totals to confirm what he believes. Between all of the groups, how many of the 39 Clues have already been found?

Answer: 38

All of the teams at the church have come to the point where they are waiting for Dan and Amy to arrive, as they have come to realize that the young pair have proven themselves excellent Clue hunters. As Amy and Dan enter the church, the other groups all make their way out, leaving cameras behind to see what the siblings do, and being prepared to follow them.
9. Dan takes rubbings of the inscription etched into Shakespeare's tombstone, enough for each team. In the process he discovers a hidden message beneath the one that everyone could see. What does it implore the one who finds it to do?

Answer: Dig up the grave

Dan and Amy sneak back to the church after dark and dig through crumbling mortar to find a metal pole inscribed with five words over and over: Madrigal Stronghold * Cahill Ancestral Home. They also find a fragile ribbon with mixed up letters on it. Unfortunately, their subterfuge was to no avail, as the other teams all showed up as they revealed the artifacts.
10. With a new clue in hand, Amy and Dan determine that they must find a location at 53 degrees N, 6 degrees W. When they check it on Nellie's GPS, they are surprised to see where the coordinates point. Where do they have to go?

Answer: In the ocean, two miles off the coast of Ireland

Even though the helicopter pilot that they hired insisted that there would be nothing at those coordinates, Dan, Amy and Nellie are pleased to find a small island when they reach the spot. Was this the former home of Gideon and Olivia Cahill?
11. At the Cahill ancestral home, the teams all converge once again, and they find an elevator that requires a retinal scan from a representative of every Cahill branch. In what order does the computerized voice call the branch names?

Answer: Ekat, Janus, Lucian, Tomas, Madrigal

Everyone else is amazed that Dan's retinal scan is approved as a Madrigal representative. Dan had told Jonah that fact while they were in China, but Jonah had figured it was an angry exclamation over not knowing what branch he actually was.
12. The elevator opened to reveal a staircase spiraling into the depths. At the bottom, the group arrives at a door with a plate inscribed with a message that summarized the goal of the Madrigal branch of the family: "On this island a family split apart, on this island a family can _______." What is the missing word?

Answer: reunite

Over the centuries, the Madrigals had remained a mysterious opponent to the other branches of the Cahill family, none of whom were aware of the existence of the youngest Cahill sibling, Madeleine. While the ultimate goal of the Madrigals was to reunite the family, much of their time was spent simply preventing the other branches from finding all 39 Clues until the time was right and a reconciliation was possible.
13. As the different teams are trying to make sense of what they have learned, an explosion occurs above them, raining rocks and boulders down on them. Everyone dives for cover or helps someone to a place of safety. Who caused the explosion?

Answer: Isabel Kabra

Ian and Natalie Kabra had come on this leg of the clue hunt without their mother, trying to reconcile their own misgivings over Isabel's ruthlessness.

Despite the efforts of the Madrigal branch to force the different families to work together in this stronghold, Isabel's actions change this fact as the explosions rip open doorways that would have required all five groups to open together.
14. The groups arrive at a final door that says "Outsiders believe that this lost play of Shakespeare's is a sequel to one of his comedies. But Madrigals know that the play actually described Madrigals' hopes for the Cahill family to reunite." What is the name of the play?

Answer: Love's Labour Won

Historians have found reference to "Love's Labour Won" through the references of the late sixteenth-century writer, Francis Meres, and on a bookseller's referring to it as a recent work of Shakespeare's, but no play of this title has survived.
15. Isabel's treachery is foiled, and as a group, they discover what the 39th Clue is. Amazingly, it is not another ingredient to the serum, rather it is the recipe on how to mix the 38 ingredients found in the Clue hunt. The different groups decide to trust Amy and Dan to make the right choice and each team divulges their different Clues.

Answer: True

Over the course of the Clue hunt, Amy and Dan proved themselves to be true Madrigals in the sense of wanting the family to be united, using many opportunities to work with other teams, and even to sacrifice Clues and safety to themselves to safeguard the others at different times. Now Dan and Amy are faced with a huge responsibility, and an uncertain future.
