Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If there's a trophy that's close to the heart of an Aussie sports fan, it's the one we contest with the England Cricket Team every couple of years. That's right, the Ashes. But they won't let that trophy out of the Lord's Cricket Ground, so I'll have to settle for taking five wickets in an innings. After that I'll be presented with what item, which I can then mount for my trophy shelf?

Answer: Ball

Ah, the sight of Glenn McGrath or Shane Warne holding the ball aloft and showing it all corners of the ground. Two of the best bowlers Australia has ever seen, and what a team they made. McGrath took 29 five wicket hauls in his career, while Warne took 37. That's a lot of cricket balls for the trophy shelf!

I better head off to the nets to get in some more bowling practice!
2. I've just been measuring my trophy cabinet for a trophy I really want to win. I think it'll be a tight fit though. What is the diameter of the gold ball that sits on top of the Larry O'Brien Trophy, given to the U.S. National Basketball Association winning team?

Answer: Nine inches

I can't wait to get this one onto my trophy shelf. It's made from silver covered in gold, and weighs around 7.25 kilograms (16 pounds). The basketball part of the trophy is actually pretty close to the size of a real ball.

I think maybe I better lift some weights, as I'll need to be pretty strong to lift the trophy over my head.
3. I'm going to have a ball winning this next trophy. It was formerly known as the 'Jules Rimet Trophy', and has been won by Brazil at least five times - but by what name is it now known?

Answer: FIFA World Cup Trophy

If I had won this trophy before 1970, I'd have had one made from gold and trimmed with lapis lazuli, depicting Nike! (Of course, Nike is the Greek goddess of victory). Now when I get this trophy, it'll be Earth being held up by two human figures. It will still be gold of course, but with a malachite base. I have a place reserved for this one...now to work on my soccer/football/round ball skills!
4. The Six Nations Championship Trophy annual rugby tournament features the national teams of England, France, Scotland, Wales, and which two other European countries?

Answer: Italy and Ireland

I'm excited to be playing against some of the world's best teams. Until Italy joined the competition in 2000, it was - you guessed it - the Five Nations Trophy that was contested.

The competition was originally started in the late 19th century but it wasn't until 1993 that a trophy was awarded, won for the first time that year by France.
5. I'm off to get some lessons from John Bertrand, whom I expect will bombard my ears with terms like 'hull' and 'winged keel' and 'yar'. After those lessons I reckon I'll be all set to win what trophy from the New York Yacht Club, who had held it from 1857 - 1953?

Answer: The America's Cup

Hmmm, I'll need to find a large place to display the 'Auld Mug' as it's affectionately known; it's huge! It's made of sterling silver, and looks more like a jug than a mug to me. And she's old! The first time this annual event was won was 1851.

The New York Yacht Club held it from 1857 until 1983 when it was won by the yacht Australia II, from Royal Perth Yacht Club, and John Bertrand was the skipper! I heard that that's the longest winning streak in the history of sport, and I'm inclined to believe that!
6. I really want this trophy, named after a quartet of players who led France to victory in the Davis Cup in 1928. Called 'Coupe des Mousquetaires', what is the English name for the trophy players contest at the French Open?

Answer: The Musketeers' Cup

I thought they had it wrong for a second - weren't there three musketeers? Then I discovered that the trophy was inaugurated in 1927 and honoured four Frenchman who had won a Davis Cup victory! It was soon after the movie success of the 1925 adaption of The Three Musketeers novel by French writer, Alexandre Dumas.

The name was adopted for the cup, and obviously, it stuck and became official. The four champions who won the Davis Cup victory and subsequently honoured by the trophy were Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet and Rene Lacoste.

Now, who can help me develop a two-handed backhand shot?
7. In le Tour de France I could win a trophy at the end, but what I really want in my possession is the 'maillot jaune'. By what English name is that coveted prize known?

Answer: Yellow Jersey

Given for finishing all the stages in the fastest combined time, I'd like to add this garment, presented since 1919 to the leader of le Tour de France, to my collection of trophies. Actually, there's evidence that a yellow jersey was given the to the race leader to wear before that time, but officially, it was introduced in 1919.

It has had a bit of an on-and-off history (no pun intended!) with the presentation of the jersey abandoned the very next year (at first) but then given to the leader after the ninth stage. At various times the 'maillot jaune' has had zips inserted at the front, at the back, had the rider's initials on the front and on the sleeve, been one-size-fits-all and made in a limited number of sizes. I don't care if it fits me or not, so long as I get to wear it!
8. I really don't mind if I manage to acquire the Melbourne Cup, the Triple Crown or the Goodwood Cup. If I get one of those, though, in what sport will I have excelled?

Answer: Horseracing

Of course, being a Mebournian, I'd really like to win the Melbourne Cup, presented to the winner of the race of the same name each November. Such is the dedication of Victorians to the race, we're given a public holiday to celebrate! And celebrate we do. Thousands flock to the Flemington Race Track for a day of fun and frivolity.

There are contests for the best-dressed lady, best-dressed gent, the best hat - oh, and we manage to remember to see the horse races, too. The Melbourne Cup is known as the 'race that stops a nation' as all around Australia, people watch or listen to see which horse will win!
9. I can't wait to have the trophy presented to the winner of the British Open, and you'll soon see why! The Golf Champion Trophy is also known by what name?

Answer: The Claret Jug

What's not to love? This will look great on my trophy shelf. I think it'll look a lot better than the original prize, a leather belt with a silver buckle, with which the winner was presented in the mid 1800s. After Scotsman 'Young' Tom Morris won the belt for the third consecutive time he became the permanent owner of it and discussions began to find a new trophy. The Claret Jug, as it is traditionally known, was forged by Mackay Cunningham & Company of Edinburgh and was first presented in 1873.

I'm off to the driving range to get in some practice!
10. It's a cold place I have to go to attempt to lay hold of this trophy, but I understand teams with great players such as Wayne Gretzky have done it in the past. If I wanted to win the Stanley Cup, what sport would I have to play?

Answer: Ice hockey

I know that Lord Stanley (an Englishman who was Governor of Canada from 1888 until 1893) expressed a wish that there could be trophy that to present to the best amateur Canadian hockey team. The Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, known informally as the Stanley Cup, was purchased by Lord Stanley in the late 1800s. It is has been presented ever since to the winning team, by the Amateur Hockey Associations of Canada initially, and subsequently by the premier North American hockey associations; from 1910 by the National Hockey Association, and since 1926, the National Hockey League.

If I want to win this one, I better get my skates on!
