Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. College basketball is massive in North Carolina, with some of the country's most successful schools based there. Which is the only one of these colleges that did NOT win the men's NCAA national championship during the 20th century?

Answer: Wake Forest

North Carolina won three national crowns in the 20th century, with Duke and NC State both triumphing twice. Whilst they didn't manage to win a national title, the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest have proved to be no slouches either, finishing third in 1962 and winning numerous ACC titles.
2. The Chrysler Classic, a golf tournament on the PGA tour, became the Wyndham Championship in 2007. In which North Carolina city does it take place?

Answer: Greensboro

The Greater Greensboro Open, as it was called in its pre-sponsorship days (1987 and prior), has been a stop on the PGA tour since 1938. Sam Snead won the tournament a record eight times between 1938 and 1965. David Love III won it in 2006, the last year it was named the Chrysler Classic, and Brandt Snedeker won it in 2007 when it became the Wyndham Championship.
3. The Carolina Panthers joined the NFL in 1995, and in just their ninth season made it all the way to the NFL title game. Which team defeated them in Superbowl XXXVIII?

Answer: New England Patriots

Coached by John Fox and quarterbacked by Jake Delhomme, the Panthers won the NFC South with an 11-5 record. In the playoffs, they saw off the Dallas Cowboys, St Louis Rams and Philadelphia Eagles to reach the Superbowl in Houston. The Patriots just edged out the Charlotte-based team, winning 32-29 with a last-gasp field goal from Adam Vinatieri.
4. Which sport would you be most likely be going to watch if you headed to the city of Concord, near Charlotte?

Answer: Auto racing

The Charlotte Motor Speedway is located just northeast of Charlotte in the city of Concord, and is a regular venue on the NASCAR calendar. The Sprint All-Star Race, Coca-Cola 600, and Bank of America 500 all take place there.
5. NHL hockey came to North Carolina in 1997 when which team relocated to the state and renamed themselves the Carolina Hurricanes?

Answer: Hartford Whalers

The franchise was originally known as the New England Whalers and began as a Boston-based WHA team in 1971. A change of league and a move to Hartford followed in 1979. The team struggled to make money in the Connecticut city and moved to North Carolina in 1997, playing temporarily in Greensboro before a new arena in Raleigh was completed.
6. Joey Cheek, from Greensboro, NC, is an Olympic gold medallist in which winter sport?

Answer: Speed skating

Joey Cheek was born in Greensboro in 1979. In 2006, he won the sprint title at the world championships in Heerenveen. A few weeks later in Turin, he added Olympic gold in the 500m discipline.
7. There are no major league baseball teams in North Carolina, but plenty of Minor League ones. Which one of the following was NOT the name of a team based in the state during the 2012 season?

Answer: Cape Fear Crocs

The Knights were a team in the AAA International league, whilst the Crawdads and Intimidators were both members of the Class A South Atlantic League. The Crocs were a South Atlantic team based in Fayetteville until the end of the 2000 season, when they relocated to Lakewood, New Jersey, and renamed themselves the Blue Claws.
8. Which former world heavyweight champion boxer was born in Magnolia, NC?

Answer: James "Bonecrusher" Smith

Smith was born in Magnolia in 1953 and turned pro in 1981. After losing to Larry Holmes in an IBF title fight in 1984, he defeated Tim Witherspoon in 1986 to claim the WBA version of the world title. The following year, he lost a unification bout with Mike Tyson.
9. The Charlotte Bobcats were an NBA expansion team in 2004. They replaced the city's previous franchise, the Hornets, who had relocated to which city in 2002?

Answer: New Orleans

The Charlotte Hornets began playing in 1988, but public disaffection with owner George Shinn saw plummeting attendances around the turn of the millenium. The Hornets relocated to New Orleans after the 2001/02 season, but the NBA moved quickly to fill the gap, with the Bobcats beginning play in November of 2004.
10. The Appalachian State Mountaineers created one of the biggest shocks in the history of college football in 2007 when they went on the road and defeated which storied program in front of their home fans?

Answer: Michigan

The Mountaineers, based in Boone, NC, play their football in the Southern Conference at FCS level. When they travelled to Ann Arbor to play the Wolverines in the 2007 season opener, most fans expected them to be little more than cannon fodder for their FBS opponents. Instead, in front of over 109,000 fans, they blocked a last-second Michigan field goal attempt to win the game 34-32.
