Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Columbus Blue Jackets were a National Hockey League expansion team in 2000. They reached the NHL play-offs for the first time in 2009 under the direction of which head coach?

Answer: Ken Hitchcock

Hitchcock was appointed as head coach of the Blue Jackets in November, 2006. The 2008-09 season saw them reach the play-offs for the first time in franchise history, but it turned out to be a short campaign. Facing up to the defending champion Detroit Red Wings in the first round, they were swept 4-0.
2. Edwin Moses, from Dayton, Ohio, was a track star who won two Olympic gold medals in which event?

Answer: 400 m hurdles

Moses won Olympic gold at both Montreal in 1976 and Los Angeles in 1984. The US boycott of the 1980 games in Moscow prevented him from completing a very probable hat-trick. Between 1977 and 1987 he won an astonishing 122 consecutive races. He won gold at the World Athletics Championships in both 1983 and 1987.
3. The Cleveland Browns joined the National Football League in 1950. They were members of which league from 1946 until 1949?

Answer: All-America Football Conference

The Browns were founder members of the AAFC, and were champions of that league in all four seasons of its existence. Following the 1949 season, the AAFC folded, with the Browns joining the NFL, along with the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Colts. The Browns didn't waste any time adapting to life in the NFL, winning the league title in their very first year as members.
4. Which legendary golfer was born in the Columbus, Ohio, suburb of Upper Arlington?

Answer: Jack Nicklaus

Nicklaus was born in Upper Arlington in 1940. He won the US Amateur title twice whilst a student at Ohio State. Turning professional in 1961, he won his first major at the 1962 US Open. He would go on to become the first male golfer to win 18 professional majors, the last of which came at the 1986 Masters.
5. Which professional tennis tournament is the oldest in the USA to have been continuously played in a single city, the first edition having taken place in 1899?

Answer: Cincinnati Masters

Although the US Open is older, having started in 1881, it hasn't always been played in New York - early editions took place in Newport, RI.
The Cincinnati Masters was first held in 1899, with Nat Emerson and Myrtle McAteer being the respective men's and women's champions. The event takes place on hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
6. What was the nickname given to the Cincinnati Reds team which won back-to-back baseball World Series titles in 1975 and 1976?

Answer: Big Red Machine

The hiring of manager Sparky Anderson in 1970 triggered off a decade in which the Reds were regular postseason participants. The "Big Red Machine" won six divisional titles and four pennants during the 1970s and won the World Series twice. In 1975, they defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in a classic Series which wasn't decided until the bottom of the ninth of game seven at Fenway Park.

The following year, the Reds won in much more conclusive style, sweeping the New York Yankees 4-0.
7. If you took a trip to Canton, Ohio, you would be able to visit the Hall of Fame of which sport?

Answer: American Football

The Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in Canton in 1963. The location was chosen as a reflection of the part played by the long-defunct Canton Bulldogs in the development of the professional game in the early years of the 20th century. Between four and seven new members are selected to the Hall each year.

The day after their induction, the Hall of Fame exhibition game is played between two NFL teams at the adjacent Fawcett Stadium.
8. The Ohio State Buckeyes are one of the most successful colleges in gridiron history, with numerous conference and national championships. Which head coach led them to five national titles between 1954 and 1970?

Answer: Woody Hayes

Hayes was appointed head coach at Ohio State in 1951, and, during a 28-year tenure, led the school to five national titles and 13 Big Ten crowns. His teams went to the Rose Bowl eight times, winning on four occasions. He was fired after an incident at the 1978 Gator Bowl when he punched a Clemson player.
9. The Cleveland Cavaliers joined the National Basketball Association in 1970. They reached their first NBA Finals in 2007, when they lost to which team?

Answer: San Antonio Spurs

With Mike Brown as coach and LeBron James at small forward, the Cavaliers defeated the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Championship. Their first trip to the Finals was to end in disappointment when they were swept 4-0 by the Spurs.
10. If you went to a Columbus Crew game, which sport would you be watching?
