Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Massachusetts golf course hosted three US Opens in the 20th century as well as the 1999 Ryder Cup?

Answer: Brookline

The Country Club, Brookline, is located in Norfolk County in the western suburbs of Boston. It first held the US Open in 1913, when Francis Ouimet was the winner. Julius Boros (1963) and Curtis Strange (1988) also won US Opens there.
2. Which legendary ice hockey player helped the Boston Bruins to Stanley Cup victories in both 1970 and 1972, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy on both occasions?

Answer: Bobby Orr

Orr was born in Ontario in 1948 and made his NHL debut with the Bruins in 1966. He won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year for 1966/67. In 1970, the Nruins swept the St Louis Blues to win their first Stanley Cup since 1949, with Orr being voted MVP of both the regular sason and the play-offs.

Another title came along in 1972, when the New York Rangers were defeated 4-2. Orr again won both the regular season and play-offs MVP awards. After ten seasons with the Bruins, he joined the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent in 1976.
3. Which boxer from Brockton, Massachusetts is the only World Heavyweight Champion to go though an entire professional career undefeated?

Answer: Rocky Marciano

Marciano was born in Brockton in 1923. He turned pro in 1948 and won the world title in 1952, defeating Jersey Joe Walcott. He made six successful defences of his crown before retiring from the sport in 1956.
4. The Boston Cannons are a team in which sport?

Answer: Lacrosse

The Cannons have been members of Major League Lacrosse since the league's foundation in 2001. In 2012, they played their home games at Harvard Stadium. They won the first championship in franchise history in 2011, defeating the Hamilton Nationals in the final.
5. The New England Patriots won three Super Bowls in a four-year span in the first decade of the 21st century. Which one of the following teams was NOT one of their victims in the big game?

Answer: Seattle Seahawks

The Patriots won their first crown at Super Bowl XXXVI in February, 2002. An Adam Vinatieri field goal on the last play of the game saw them edge out the Rams. Two years later, in Superbowl XXXVIII, Viantieri was at it again, his field goal with 4 seconds left being enough to see off the Panthers.

The following year, in Superbowl XXXIX, they held off a late Eagles comeback to repeat as champions.
6. Which figure skater from Woburn, Massacusetts was, in 1994, the victim of a serious assault allegedly organised by rival skater Tonya Harding?

Answer: Nancy Kerrigan

Kerrigan was born in Woburn in 1969, and made her Olympic debut in 1992, winning a bronze medal. She was attacked in Detroit in January 1994, although the damage done turned out to be less serious than intended. She made it to the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, winning a silver medal. Five people served time in jail in connection with the attack, although Harding escaped jail time following a plea bargain.
7. Which manager was in charge of the 2004 Boston Red Sox when they won their first World Series in 86 years?

Answer: Terry Francona

Going into the 2004 season, the Sox hadn't won a World Series since 1918, a drought often described as the "Curse of the Bambino", referring to the sale of Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919. With first-year manager Francona at the helm, the Red Sox made the play-offs as a wild card team, but looked like they would come up short once again when they lost the first three games of the ALCS to the Yankees, and trailed in the 9th inning of game four.

They salvaged that game in extra innings, then went on an unprecedented run, winning the next three games to advance to the World Series, then sweeping the St Louis Cardinals to win it all.
8. In 2012, which stadium was the home venue for the New England Revolution MLS team?

Answer: Gillette Stadium

The New England Revolution began play in 1996 as one of the original franchises of Major League Soccer. In 2012, they shared Gillette Stadium in Foxboro with the NFL's New England Patriots.
9. The University of Massachusetts Minutemen's football team moved up from FCS to FBS level in 2012 when they joned which conference?

Answer: Mid-American Conference

The University of Massachusetts has its flagship campus in Amherst. The Minutemen play sports across a number of conferences - basketball in the Atlantic 10, ice hockey in Hockey East, Lacrosse in the Colonial Athletic Association, and football in the MAC.
10. The Boston Celtics won eight successive NBA titles between 1959 and 1966 under the guidance of which coach?

Answer: Red Auerbach

Auerbach was appointed head coach of the Celtics in 1950 and transformed the struggling franchise immediately. In 16 seasons at the helm of the team, Auerbach reached the playoffs every single year, winning nine divisional crowns, and going to ten straight NBA finals, winning nine of those, including eight in a row.
