More commonly known as the winning quarterback in the legendary 'Stanford Band Play' game, California product Gale Gilbert was the third string quarterback for the Buffalo Bills when they were defeated in four consecutive Super Bowls between 1990 and 1993. Following the '93 season, Gilbert became a member of the San Diego Chargers and watched from the sidelines as starter Stan Humphries guided the franchise to its first Super Bowl appearance, losing to the SF 49ers 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX.

Following the 1980 season, the 49ers front office agreed that shoring up their coverage unit was a top priority. The franchise drafted Southern Cal cornerback/safety Ronnie Lott, Missouri cornerback Eric Wright, and Pittsburgh safety Carlton Williamson. All three were immediate starters and helped guide the inexperienced 49ers to a 26-21 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI.

At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, sprinter Bob Hayes helped the USA's 400 meter relay team win the gold medal. Seven years later as a starting wide receiver, he helped the Dallas Cowboys win their first Super Bowl by defeating the Miami Dolphins 24-3 in Super Bowl VI. Nicknamed "Bullet Bob", Hayes's amazing speed helped lead to the creation of the zone defense, which many opponents employed in an attempt to contain the receiver.

Drafted late by the 49ers out of Notre Dame in 1979, Joe Montana spent most of his rookie season observing incumbent starter Steve DeBerg, who in 1978 had set an NFL record for passing attempts in one season. By 1981 Montana was the team's starter, and DeBerg had been traded to the Denver Broncos where he started for two seasons before losing the job in 1983 to rookie John Elway.

Following the New York Jets' legendary upset of the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, Jets owner Sonny Werblin rewarded running back Matt Snell with a mint green Cadillac El Dorado for his performance in the victory. Snell gained 123 yards on 30 carries and scored the team's only touchdown, then watched as quarterback Joe Namath was presented with the game's MVP award despite a performance far less glamorous then his persona.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Ken Anderson passed for 300 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the team's loss to the SF 49ers in Super Bowl XVI.

The pro football community and its fans were stunned shortly before the 1970 season when legendary coach Vince Lombardi died of intestinal cancer. At the time of his diagnosis in June of that year, Lombardi had completed his first season as coach of the Washington Redskins.

A week after his death, the NFL renamed the World Championship Game Trophy, awarded annually to the winner of the Super Bowl, to the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

To commemorate the release of 52 American hostages in Iran, organizers placed an 80 foot long, 30 foot wide yellow bow above the entrance of the Louisiana Superdome for Super Bowl XV between the Oakland Raiders and the Philadelphia Eagles. Replicas of the bow were handed out to those in attendance.

Super Bowl XXXIII between the Atlanta Falcons and the Denver Broncos featured the oldest player ever to appear on a Super Bowl roster up to that point. 45 year old quarterback Steve DeBerg was a member of the Falcons that season, and watched from the sidelines as the Falcons and starting quarterback Chris Chandler lost to the Broncos 34-19

As an experiment, the NFL decided to lift its blackout rule for Super Bowl VII between The Miami Dolphins and the Washington Redskins. The game was played at the Los Angeles Coliseum January 14, 1973. The previous six Super Bowls had all been subject to local blackouts.

This policy was enforced even if the game was a sell-out. Following Super Bowl VII, the NFL changed the rule permanently to allow for local broadcasts of any Super Bowl that sold out at least 72 hours prior to kickoff.

Richard Dent recorded his first sack of Super Bowl XX on New England Patriots quarterback Tony Eason. He shared the sack with linebacker Wilber Marshall. The sack forced Eason to fumble the football and it was recovered by Bears defensive end Dan Hampton.

Because of a weak regular season schedule and lack of experience (only LB Nick Buonicconti was at least 30 years old), the undefeated 1972 Dolphins were a one point underdog heading into their showdown with the Redskins. Miami won the game 14-7, holding the Redskins offense to zero points.
