Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team won the first post-season overtime game in NFL history?

Answer: Baltimore Colts

The Colts beat the Giants 23-17 in the 1958 NFL Championship Game, in what some call the greatest game ever played. Oddly enough, the Giants lost the first NFL overtime game of any kind by the same score, to the Los Angeles Rams in the 1955 preseason.
2. Which kicker ended the 1998 Minnesota Vikings season with a 38 yard field goal in the NFC Championship Game?

Answer: Morten Andersen

Andersen's kick beat the Vikings 30-27, and put the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII where they lost 34-19 to the Denver Broncos. Gary Anderson was the Vikings kicker at the time.
3. Who ended the Houston Oilers 1989 season with a 50 yard field goal in the AFC Wildcard Game?

Answer: Gary Anderson

Anderson's long field goal gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a 26-23 win. They advanced to the divisional playoffs where they lost to the Broncos 24-23.
4. Which of these was the first team to play two overtime games in the same post-season?

Answer: Cleveland Browns

In 1986, the Browns beat the New York Jets 23-20 in double overtime in the divisional playoffs, then lost 23-20 in overtime to the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game. The Packers of 2003 were the second team to do this.
5. In a 1977 AFC divisional playoff game, quarterback Ken Stabler threw a 10 yard TD pass to tight end Dave Casper, to give the Oakland Raiders a 37-31 double overtime win over which team?

Answer: Baltimore Colts

With this win, the Raiders advanced to the AFC Championship Game where they lost to the Broncos 20-17. The Colts didn't qualify for the playoffs again for 10 years.
6. Which team did the San Diego Chargers beat in overtime to advance to the 1981 AFC Championship Game?

Answer: Miami Dolphins

In one of the most exciting games in NFL history, the Chargers beat the Dolphins in the divisional playoffs, 41-38 in overtime. The Chargers led 24-0 after the first quarter, but Miami replaced starting quarterback David Woodley with backup Don Strock and tied the game at 24.

After both teams scored two more touchdowns, Chargers tight end Kellen Winslow blocked a Miami field goal attempt on the last play of regulation to force overtime. Incredibly, Winslow blocked another Dolphins field goal in overtime and Chargers kicker Rolf Benirschke, who had missed a 27 yard attempt that would've won the game, made a 29 yarder and the game was over.

The Chargers then lost the AFC Championship Game to the Cincinnati Bengals 27-7.
7. Which team won the first post-season overtime game after the 1970 AFL/NFL merger?

Answer: Miami Dolphins

On Christmas Day 1971, the Dolphins beat the Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 when kicker Garo Yepremian hit a 37 yard field goal half way through the second overtime period. This game set a record for the longest NFL game ever played, and was also the first ever post-season win for the Dolphins. Miami went on to win the AFC Championship 21-0 over the Baltimore Colts, before falling 24-3 to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl VI.
8. Which team beat the New York Giants 19-13 in overtime in a 1989 NFC Divisional playoff game, to advance to the NFC Championship Game?

Answer: Los Angeles Rams

The Rams beat the Giants when quarterback Jim Everett hit wide receiver Willie "Flipper" Anderson with a 30 yard TD pass. The Rams then lost to the 49ers for the NFC Championship 30-3.
9. Which team did the Tennessee Titans beat in overtime to advance to the 2002 AFC Championship Game?

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Titans knocked off the Steelers 34-31 before losing the AFC Championship Game 41-24 to the Raiders.
10. Which team did the Miami Dolphins defeat 23-17 in overtime in a 2000 AFC Wildcard game?

Answer: Indianapolis Colts

The Dolphins beat the Colts only to be destroyed 27-0 by the Oakland Raiders the following week.
