Answer: New York Mets

The Mets had the unfortunate opportunity to have the worst one-run games record in the season. Appearing in 43, they won only 15. They finished the 2003 season with a record of 66-95, a last place in finish in the National League Eastern Division.
2. Which of the following greats was born on the same month and day as a U.S. President?

Answer: Warren Spahn

Spahn, mostly of the Boston and Milwaukee Braves, was born on April 23, 1921. 130 years earlier, the first U.S. President bachelor, James Buchanan, the 15th President, was born April 23, 1791.
3. Which team in 2003, lost eight games in the season by 10 or more runs?

Answer: Texas Rangers

Although Detroit had the worst record in 2003, they were only blown out twice in the season. The Rangers lost a league-leading eight times by 10 or more runs. Philadelphia and Seattle went the other way, blowing out their opponents seven times by 10 or more runs in a game during 2003.
4. Why was September 28, 1951, such a memorable date in history?

Answer: The Giants finally caught the Dodgers in an amazing comeback season

The Giants went on a tear, and went 23-8 in the last month of the season, catching the Dodgers for first place in the National League race. The season ended in a tie on September 30, forcing a three game playoff. The Giants won the first game, 3-1. The Dodgers came back with force, and shutout the Giants 10-0.

The tie-breaker was historical in itself. This was the 'Shot Heard Around the World', with Bobby Thomson's home run winning it for the Giants, 5-4. The Giants went to the World Series, losing four games to two at the hands of the Yankees.
5. During the entire 20th century, the New York Yankee franchise lost the most games to which other franchise?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

In exactly 1900 games during the century, it was the Detroit Tigers that gave them fits. The Yankee franchise lost 895 games to the Tigers. The Red Sox were a close second with winning 856 against the Yankees, compared to losing 1027. The Yankee franchise began as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901, then the New York Highlanders, then the infamous pinstriped Yankees.
6. Which of the following managing greats, never played in the Major Leagues?

Answer: Joe McCarthy

Both Mack and Williams played for 13 seasons, along with taking their Athletics to the World Series. Walter Alston, managed the Dodgers for over 20 seasons. He played in one game in the 1936 season for the St. Louis Cardinals. McCarthy, who managed the Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox, never played in a game himself. With the Yankees, he helmed the team to eight World Series appearances in 16 seasons, winning seven from 1931-1946.

He won 2125 games, and retired in 1950 ranked third in wins behind the Athletics' Connie Mack, and the Giants' John McGraw.
7. From the emergence of the National League in 1876, and the American League in 1901, California led all states with providing players to these Major Leagues in the 19th and 20th century. California had almost provided 1700 players throughout the time. Which state came in second, for most players provided to the Major Leagues in the time frame?

Answer: Pennsylvania

New York came in the third spot with 1036 players. Amazingly, Pennsylvania, although not a huge land area state, provided 1288 players to the Major Leagues in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the Pennsylvania notables were: Eddie Collins, Roy Campanella, Reggie Jackson, Ken Griffey Jr, Nellie Fox, Tom Lasorda, and Rube Waddell.

Indiana had 329, while Georgia had 263. Both Alaska and Wyoming were at the bottom of the list with eight each.
8. The largest winning streak in the 2003 season by a team was 12 games. Which team did this?

Answer: Arizona Diamondbacks

In the middle of the season, Arizona ran off 12 wins straight, from June 18 to June 30. It didn't help, as they finished third in the National League West. Minnesota had the second largest streak, by winning 11 in a row during September.
9. In 1950, which team defeated the St. Louis Browns by 25 runs, setting a 20th century record for largest margin victory?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Although 1950 was the year of the Yankees by winning their second consecutive World Series title, it was the third place Red Sox who defeated the Browns, 29-4. Dom DiMaggio and Ted Williams contributed to this fiasco.
10. Which team won the 1906 World Series?

Answer: Chicago White Sox

The inaugural World Series was in 1903, with the Pilgrims of Boston defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates. 1906 was the first of three consecutive World Series for the Chicago Cubs.
