Question 1 of 10
1. The ABA (American Basketball Association) began play in 1967 with 11 teams. One of those teams, the Pittsburgh Pipers, were the first ever champions of the new league. However, upon winning the ABA title, instead of defending their title the next season, the Pipers picked up and moved to what city? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. When the WHA (World Hockey Association) began play in 1972, like all start up leagues, they wanted to have a team in New York City which was the largest TV market in the world, so the New York Raiders were born. They were set to begin play in the Nassau Coliseum but the owners of the Coliseum didn't want a WHA team so the NHL granted Long Island a franchise (Islanders). The Raiders were thus forced to play in Madison Square Garden where they were 4th fiddle behind the Rangers, Knicks, and whatever else was going on (concerts, circus, etc.). After the first season of poor crowds and lackluster play the team was sold and the new ownership changed the name to the Golden Blades, but after just 20 games in front of a nearly empty building the team picked up and moved south and became what team? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The Houston Oilers were a charter member of the AFL in 1960 and won the first 2 AFL championships. They were a staple of the NFL post merger (post 1970), making the playoffs many times but are best remembered for blowing a 32 point second half lead to the Bills to lose 41-38 (playoffs in January 1993). A few seasons after this devastating loss the team left Houston to become what team? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The New Orleans Jazz began play in the NBA for the 1974-75 season but in 5 seasons in The Big Easy, the Jazz found no success and moved to Salt Lake City in 1979. All seemed lost for New Orleans but in 2002 another team left and moved to New Orleans. What was that team? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Major League Baseball doesn't have a lot of movement but in 1901, when the American League was founded, there were teams everyone is familiar with like the Philadelphia Athletics, Washington Senators, Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Stockings (White Sox), There was another team whose name is familiar, the Baltimore Orioles, but they're not today's Orioles. They were only around for two seasons before moving and becoming what team? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. During the 7 years the WHA operated (1972 to 1979), teams moved or folded nearly every season as well as an occasional expansion team somewhere. In 1975 an expansion team was granted to Denver, Colorado and they were christened the Spurs. But this didn't last too long. After only 34 games, due to poor attendances, the team moved and became what team? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Kansas City Scouts came into the NHL for the 1974-75 season along with the Washington Capitals. However, the Scouts had trouble drawing due to several factors including an economic downturn in the midwest so, after only two seasons, the team moved to Denver and became the Colorado Rockies. This wouldn't be their last move. After six lackluster seasons in Denver, the second of which resulted in the franchises first ever playoff appearance, the team moved again and became what team? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. When the NHL expanded in 1972 one of the new teams was the Atlanta Flames. The Flames played in Atlanta for 8 seasons and even though they were moderately successful finishing above .500 in 5 of those seasons and making the playoffs every season but two (only winning one playoff game in the process), the team had problems drawing crowds and eventually moved to what Canadian city? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. In 1930 the Portsmouth Spartans (OH) began play in the NFL. They existed for four seasons until they moved and became what beleaguered team? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The USFL was only around for three seasons (1983 to 1985), but they were three eventful seasons. The most successful franchise in this league was undoubtedly the Stars who appeared in all three championship games winning two of them. The first two seasons saw the Stars play in Philadelphia but after the league announced they were going to move to the fall for the 1986 season, knowing they wouldn't be able to share a stadium with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Stars had to find a new city. Where did they move to prior to the 1985 season? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The ABA (American Basketball Association) began play in 1967 with 11 teams. One of those teams, the Pittsburgh Pipers, were the first ever champions of the new league. However, upon winning the ABA title, instead of defending their title the next season, the Pipers picked up and moved to what city?

Answer: Minneapolis

Despite winning the title and even drawing well in Pittsburgh, the Pipers picked up and moved to Minnesota to become the Minnesota Pipers. In an even more bizarre move, after only one season in Minneapolis, the Pipers moved back to Pittsburgh but the team was a failure on the court and the box office and even after a name change to the Condors they folded after the 1971-72 season.

Answer: Jersey Knights

The Golden Blades moved to Cherry Hill, NJ which is a suburb of Philadelphia. Philadelphia had just lost the Blazers to Vancouver but neither team could compete with the Flyers who were in the midst of their first Stanley Cup winning season. The arena the Knights played in was awful to say the least.

There was no visiting team locker room so the visiting team had to dress at their hotel, the boards had chicken wire and not plexiglass, and the ice sloped in one direction which made it seem the visiting team had to skate uphill for 2 periods.

This only lasted one season as the franchise moved out west to become the San Diego Mariners.

Answer: Tennessee Oilers

Some might not remember that the Oilers kept the Oilers name for two seasons after the move to Tennessee (1997 and 1998), and didn't become the Titans until moving into their new stadium in Nashville in 1999. It was that season where the Oilers/Titans playoff fortunes would change as first they would avenge their playoff loss to the Bills with the Music City Miracle (they won 22-16 with the winning touchdown was score with 15 seconds on the clock).

They eventually made it to the Super Bowl where they gave the Greatest Show on Turf St.Louis Rams all they could handle and fall 1 yard short of tying the game on the final play of the game, to lose 23-16.

Answer: Charlotte Hornets

The Hornets began play in 1988 and had marginal success making the playoffs in 6 of their 14 seasons, winning 4 series. But attendance dwindled and the ownership moved to New Orleans to be the New Orleans Hornets then changed to the Pelicans in 2013.

Answer: New York Highlanders

In 1903 the Orioles were sold to two NY politicians and became the New York Highlanders, a name they would keep until the 1913 season when they became the NY Yankees.

Answer: Ottawa Civics

The Spurs problems began when it was announced the NHL's Kansas City Scouts were moving to Denver in 1976 and the fans in Denver didn't consider the WHA a major hockey league. So after only 34 games the Spurs moved to Ottawa and became the Civics. Their uniforms continued to be the same as the Spurs. Eventually new uniforms wouldn't be needed because the Civics folded after only 7 games even though they played in front of sold out crowds in Ottawa.

Incidentally, the Spurs/Civics players didn't know the team had moved and only found out when they were to play the Stingers in Cincinnati the scoreboard read "Civics" and "Oh, Canada", Canada's national anthem, was played before the game.

Answer: New Jersey Devils

Even after the move to NJ the newly named Devils were less than successful finishing either 5th or 6th in the Patrick Division for their first 5 seasons in NJ, meaning none of their first 13 seasons had a winning record. In 1988 their fortunes began to change and not only did they have their first winning season, but they won their first playoff series even going to the conference finals. Eventually the Devils would become one of the more successful teams in the NHL winning division titles, going to the Stanley Cup finals and winning the Cup.

They won their first Stanley Cup in 1994-95.

Answer: Calgary

The Flames failure was the first time the NHL tried expanding to the south. After they moved, there wasn't another team in the southern USA until the Tampa Bay Lightening entered the league in 1992.
9. In 1930 the Portsmouth Spartans (OH) began play in the NFL. They existed for four seasons until they moved and became what beleaguered team?

Answer: Detroit Lions

The Spartans were a successful franchise but they moved to Detroit for the 1934 season. The Lions won their first championship a year later in 1935. They won 3 more NFL titles.

Answer: Baltimore

The Baltimore Colts left that city the previous year moving to Indianapolis leaving Baltimore without a football team. The Stars moved to Baltimore and won the 1985 USFL championship over the Oakland Invaders 28-24. The Philadelphia Stars were one of the teams that were a part of the USFL revival in 2022 but were not one of the USFL teams that merged with the XFL which became the UFL in 2024.

Incidentally the revived Stars did make the championship game losing to the Birmingham Stallions 33-30 meaning the Stars were a part of the first four USFL title games.
