The Loneliest Boy In the World Quiz

It can be counter intuitive that a professional athlete standing in front of tens of thousands of cheering fans would ever feel lonely - but there is no lonelier feeling in sport than having your gaffe displayed for the world to see.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which superstar Italian player missed the final penalty kick of the 1994 World Cup Final?

Answer: Roberto Baggio

Roberto Baggio was named the best played of the 1994 World Cup, but unfortunately for him and for the Italian team, the image of him hanging his head after he kicked a penalty that would have kept the Italians in contention for the World Cup trophy well over the bar and into the blue sky is what the final is best remembered for.
2. Which French midfielder was red-carded in the 2006 World Cup Final for headbutting an opponent?

Answer: Zinedine Zidane

Zidane was said to have been provoked by Italian defender Marco Materazzi, who spoke negatively about his sister. Zidane had been far and away the best player of the tournament so far, winning the Golden Ball. He retired after the game and chose to serve his red-card suspension through community service. He has never apologized to Materazzi, claiming that provocation is wrong.
3. Which Colombian defender conceded an own goal in the 1994 World Cup, that may have been a factor in his death?

Answer: Andres Escobar

Escobar had stretched to block a cross from his American opponent when he inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net, which contributed to Colombia's elimination from the tournament. Many professional players will know the terrible feeling of conceding an own goal, but Escobar would suffer greatly for his mistake.

He was shot and killed in his home country of Colombia, with the assailant reportedly taunting him about the own goal with each bullet shot out of his gun.
4. Which then-undefeated professional boxer was knocked out by heavy underdog Buster Douglas in 1990?

Answer: Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson entered the bout with a perfect 37-0 record facing the #7 ranked Douglas, who was definitely the underdog on the night. The fight was considered a warm-up for his eventual title challenge against Evander Holyfield. Douglas would shock the world by knocking Tyson out in tenth round. Tyson had reportedly partied all night, calling Douglas an "amateur he could beat, even if he hadn't slept for five weeks".
5. Which Seattle Seahawks quarterback famously threw a last-possession interception against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX?

Answer: Russell Wilson

The Seahawks were knocking on the door of their second consecutive championship. With seconds left to play, they found themselves with three downs to score a touchdown, down 4 at the Patriots' one yard line. The coaching decision to throw the ball instead of handing it to star running back Marshawn Lynch was widely criticized by media and fans alike, as Wilson would throw an interception to rookie cornerback Malcolm Butler, effectively ending the game and handing the Patriots and Tom Brady their fourth Super Bowl championship.
6. Which NFL team famously surrendered a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons were quarterbacked by the 2016 regular season MVP Matt Ryan, and found themselves leading the game 28-3 after a stellar first half defensive performance, including an interception of Tom Brady returned for a touchdown. In one of the biggest breakdowns in professional sports history, the Patriots would score 25 unanswered points in the second half to tie the game and take it into overtime.

They would ride the momentum into the extra period, scoring a touchdown to immediately end the game, leaving the Falcons shell shocked in front of over 70,000 people.
7. Which Brazilian mixed martial artist ended his run of 16 straight victories following an upset knockout loss to Chris Weidman in UFC 162?

Answer: Anderson Silva

Anderson Silva, nicknamed "The Spider" was a dominant striker in his UFC career, holding the Middleweight title for 7 years. During his bout with Weidman, he was taunting his opponent and playing to the crowd before Weidman connected with two punches that sent Silva to the canvas, ending his unbeaten streak.

The rematch would end in horrifying fashion as Silva would break his leg following a leg kick check by Weidman, who retained his title.
8. Which American basketball superstar would lose to the underdog Dallas Mavericks following a poor performance in the 2011 NBA Finals?

Answer: LeBron James

James was considered the best basketball player in the world when his Miami Heat was set to face the Dallas Mavericks in the 2011 NBA Finals. His team was also the favorite, boasting two other superstars from James' draft class, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. James performed poorly by his standards, leading to a 4-2 series loss to the Mavericks. "The King" would bounce back, winning back to back championships in 2012 and 2013.
9. Which American basketball player held on to the ball during a tie-game in Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals, instead of calling for a time out?

Answer: JR Smith

The heavily favored Golden State Warriors met the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2018 NBA Finals and, against all odds, the Cavaliers were in a close game when George Hill was sent to the free throw line down by 1 with seconds remaining in the game. Hill would score the first free throw but miss the second, leaving the game tied. With one timeout remaining, Cleveland had great chances to win the game after JR Smith corralled an offensive rebound.

However, instead of taking a timeout and giving the team a chance to draw up a play for the final shot, JR Smith, misinterpreting the situation, held on to the ball while the seconds ticked on, sending the game into overtime, where the Cavaliers would eventually lose and go on to lose the series 4-0.
10. Blunders can be detrimental for officials as well. Baseball umpire Jim Joyce mistakenly called a runner safe, taking away which elusive feat from pitcher Armando Galarraga?

Answer: Perfect Game

A perfect game had only occurred 20 times in the past century when Galarraga was facing his 27th and final batter on June 2, 2010 when Jim Joyce called Jason Donald safe at first base, awarding him a hit. Instant replay would clearly show that Joyce was completely wrong, and the umpire was devastated by his decision, which was irreversible despite the entire stadium immediately realizing the gaffe.

He would tearfully apologize to both Galarraga and all baseball fans following the game, but the pitcher was extremely understanding stating coyly that "nobody's perfect, and "he probably feels worse than I do".

The two were widely lauded for their sportsmanship following the incident.
