1. Who scored the first ever goal at the FIFA World Cup Finals, in the tournament held in Uruguay in 1930?

Answer: Lucient Laurent

The very first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. The hosts went on to win the competition. Lucien Laurent scored in a 4-1 French victory over Mexico.
2. In the very first Super Bowl who scored the first touchdown?

Answer: Max McGee

The first Super Bowl was famously won by the Green Bay Packers. The Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 thanks in part to two touchdowns from McGee.
3. Who was the first ever Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion?

Answer: Spencer Gore

The first Championship was held in 1877. The Gentlemen's Singles was the only tournament and there were 22 entries. Gore was actually born in Wimbledon and also played first class cricket for Surrey.
4. The first Ryder Cup match was played in 1927 - who won the first singles match?

Answer: Bill Mehlhorn

The US team beat Great Britain 9.5 points to 2.5. Teams were nine a side and matches were played over two days. The competition became USA versus Europe in 1979. Mehlhorn never won a major tournament in his career but recorded 20 PGA tour victories.
5. Who hit the first ever World Series home run in 1903?

Answer: Jimmy Sebring

The Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League played the Boston Americans of the newly formed American League. Boston won the last four games, winning the series 5-3. Sebring also played for the Washington Senators as well as the Pirates and died aged only 27 from Bright's Disease in 1909.
6. At the first modern Olympiad held at Athens in 1896, the 100 metres was won by the only athlete to adopt a crouching start - what was his name?

Answer: Thomas Burke

Winners were awarded a silver medal and runners up received a copper one. Bostonian Thomas Burke was a more fancied 400 metre runner, an event he also won in a time of 54.2 seconds.

Answer: Charles Bannerman

Bannerman scored 165 in Australia's first innings thus becoming the first player to record a century in test cricket. Australia won the match by 45 runs. The match was played over four days with approximately 20,500 people attending.
8. The first Formula One World Drivers' Championship was held in 1950 - what nearly 44-year-old driver won it?

Answer: Giuseppe Farina

Farina won three races out of seven that year, driving for Alfa Romeo. It seems remarkable now but Farina was one month short of his 44th birthday. Even more remarkable was the fact that the great Fangio was even older at 46 when he became World Champion for the fourth time in 1957.
9. The first Rugby world cup was held in 1987. What player made history by scoring the first try?

Answer: Michael Jones

The competition was jointly held by Australia and New Zealand. Jones scored the first try for New Zealand against Italy. New Zealand went on to win the competition, winning all their games. The first try in the competition was actually a penalty try.
10. Who won the first World Snooker Championship in 1927?

Answer: Joe Davis

Englishman Joe Davis won the title an amazing 15 times, the last of these was in 1946. Nearly as remarkable, his brother Fred, who was 12 years Joe's junior, was champion eight times.
