Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many days is the Four Days of Dunkirk race?

Answer: 5 or 6

Despite what the name might imply, the race - which was first held in 1955 - the race hasn't actually been four days since 1963, when an individual time trial was added and the event was held over 5 or 6 days. The race is named for the Dunkirk Evacuations during WWII.
2. In 2018 the Three Days of De Panne cycling race was shortened to a one-day race and became the Three Days of Bruges-De Panne. In which year was the "three days" part dropped from the name, to become the Classic Bruges-De Panne?

Answer: 2021

It took three years for the "three days" part to be dropped from the name.
In order to keep a multi-day event, a women's race was introduced in 2018.
3. All three Grand Tours had long-distance foreign starts in 2022.

Answer: True

The Giro d'Italia started in Hungary, the Tour de France started in Denmark, and the Vuelta a Espana started in the Netherlands.
4. Which of the following riders won a Grand Tour that started in his home country?

Answer: Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard won the 2022 edition of the Tour de France, which started in Denmark.

Alejandro Valverde did win the 2009 edition of the Vuelta a Espana, however, that race started in the Netherlands. While Chris Froome won the Tour de France four times in the 2013-2017 period, he crashed out of the 2014 edition, the one that started in the UK. Fabio Aru won the 2015 edition of the Vuelta a Espana, which started in Spain.
5. Which of the following races DID take place on its originally scheduled date in the Covid-19 affected 2020 season?

Answer: Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

Taking place on 29 February, the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad was held before the season was temporarily suspended.

Originally scheduled for 5 April, the Tour of Flanders was postponed to 18 October. Originally scheduled for 10 October, Il Lombardia was actually held earlier than its usual time; on August 15. Though, it had originally been reschuled for October 31, but that date was changed so it wouldn't conflict with other races that had been rescheduled. While initially rescheduled for 25 October from its original 12 April date, Paris-Roubaix ended up being cancelled entirely.
6. What unusual situation forced the race organisers to cut short stage 19 of the 2019 Tour de France?

Answer: Mudslide

As the riders began the descent of Col d'Iseran, a sudden hailstorm caused mudslides, which rendered the road to the finish at Tignes unusuable. Instead the stage was stopped and the time was taken at the top of Col d'Iseran, with no stage winner being declared for the day. Stage 20 was also shortened from 130 km to just 59.5 km.
7. A rider who wins the Paris-Roubaix receives a rather special - and heavy - trophy. What is said trophy?

Answer: Cobblestone

It is only fitting that the Paris-Roubaix, known for its cobbled stoned roads, would have a cobblestone as the trophy.
8. The winner of the Tro-Bro Leon race gets a piglet.

Answer: False

While there is indeed a piglet, it is the best-placed Breton rider who gets the piglet. The race was first held in 1963.
9. Why would a rider grab a newspaper when cresting the top of a climb?

Answer: For insulation on the descent

Riders stuff the newspaper down the front of their jerseys in order to protect themselves against the wind effect from going down-hill with speeds at up to, or sometimes even over, 100 kph.
10. Which of the riders below is Odd?

Answer: Eiking

Odd Christian Eiking (born 28 December 1994) rode to prominence during the 2021 Vuelta a Espana when he took the red jersey after the 10th stage, and defended the lead until the end of stage 17.
