1. Whiffing, fanning, blowing them out of the box are all terms for striking out a batter. Who was the first left-handed great to strikeout 4000 batters in their career?

Answer: Steve Carlton

The others were all right-handers, and none reached the 3000 strikeout mark. Carlton played most of his career with the Cardinals and Phillies. He retired with 4136 strikeouts in 1988, second only to the great Nolan Ryan at the time. He had since been passed by left-hander Randy Johnson.
2. Left-footed? Who was the first sole left-hander batter to steal more than 100 bases in a season?

Answer: Lou Brock

Cobb was the only other left-hander batter listed, but he nor the others ever stole 100 bases in a season. Brock of the Cardinals broke Maury Wills' record of 104, when he stole 118 in 1974.

Cobb was the only left-handed batter listed. In addition to his .3664 career average, he was the first player in baseball with 4000 hits, retiring with 4189. Pete Rose broke Ty's career hit record in 1985.

The others were all right-handers. Doby was the first black American League player when the Cleveland Indians rostered him in 1947. Larry was the runner-up MVP in 1954 to another left-hander, Yogi Berra.
