Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marco Silva

Marco Silva oversaw Fulham's return to the Premier League in 2022, after they beat Luton Town 7-0 and finished top of the Championship. They then established themselves as a solid mid-table side, finishing 10th in 2023 and 13th in 2024. Fulham had been heavily reliant on the goals of Aleksandar Mitrovic and following his departure to Al-Hilal in August 2023, questions arose as to how they would manage without him. However, Rodrigo Muniz, Raúl Jiménez, Alex Iwobi - who had previously played under Silva at Everton - and Bobby Decordova-Reid all made up for Mitrovic's absence.

Silva, like his fellow countryman Jose Mourinho, had a tendency to argue with referees - he had been sent off in the FA Cup quarter final against Manchester United the previous season. Although both Al-Ahli and Al-Hilal offered him jobs in the 2022-23 post-season, he turned them down to stay in England, much to the relief of Fulham's fans, and signed a new deal in October 2023. Fulham beat both Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-0, but suffered two heavy defeats to Manchester City (0-4 at home and 5-2 away). Silva got revenge on his former club Everton in the League Cup quarter final, when Fulham knocked them out7-6 on penalties. They reached the semi-final for the first time in their history, but were knocked out by the eventual winners Liverpool 3-2 on aggregate.

Fulham play at Craven Cottage and their nickname is the Cottagers, hence the country cottage in the picture.
2. Paul Heckingbottom/Chris Wilder

Under Paul Heckingbottom who, ironically, had played for rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the 2000s, returned Sheffield United to the Premier League in 2023. However, they received a rude awakening in the Premier League, and Heckingbottom was sacked after Vincent Kompany's Burnley, who were also struggling, beat them 5-0. He was the first Premier League manager to be sacked that season, 2023-24.

A familiar face appeared in the form of Chris Wilder, who returned in December for his second stint at Sheffield United. However, they continued to struggle and beat Derby County's miserable record of 89 goals conceded in a season (by conceding 104 goals); their final goal difference was a shocking -69. Thirteen of these goals were conceded against Newcastle, eight goals at home and five away. They only won three games, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 and Brentford 1-0 at home, and Luton Town 3-1 away. Despite this, Wilder stayed and Sheffield United.

Sheffield United's nickname is the Blades, and their club badge features a pair of crossed swords.
3. Andoni Iraola

Following the sacking of Gary O'Neil, Andoni Iraola, previously of Rayo Vallecano, became manager of Bournemouth in June 2023. Despite being a little-known manager, he soon made his mark, getting Bournemouth into the fifth round of the FA Cup after beating Swansea 5-0 in the fourth, and gaining home victories against Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton, Fulham and Crystal Palace, and away victories against Wolverhampton Wanderers (managed by his predecessor Gary O'Neil), Crystal Palace and Manchester United, among others. However, they also suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat to Manchester City.

After finishing a respectable 12th, Iraola stayed on for the 2024-25 season, with previous top scorer Dominic Solanke departing for Tottenham Hotspur. He got his revenge against Manchester City, beating them 2-1 in a historic victory, and thrashing fellow Champions' League chasers Newcastle 4-1 and Nottingham Forest 5-0.

Bournemouth's nickname is the Cherries.
4. Rob Edwards

After making their way up through the leagues, Luton Town were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history in 2023, under Rob Edwards. They had beaten Coventry City 5-6 on penalties in the Championship playoff final. In 2023-2024, they had to postpone a match against Bournemouth when captain and defender Tom Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed, and was taken to hospital. The match was rescheduled and Bournemouth came back from 3-0 down to win 4-3.

Luton's season was a wake-up call; they only won six games in all, beating Everton and Sheffield United away and Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United at home. They suffered heavy defeats against Liverpool, champions Manchester City and Brentford. They finished 18th and were relegated. Although Edwards stayed, Luton slid down the Championship table the following season, and Edwards left in January 2025 following four straight losses, culminating in a 2-1 loss to Queen's Park Rangers. He was replaced by Matt Bloomfield.

Luton's nickname is the Hatters, and the picture shows the Mad Hatter's Tea Party from 'Alice in Wonderland'.
5. Eddie Howe

After taking Bournemouth to the Premier League, Eddie Howe's next gig was at Newcastle United, where he replaced the unpopular Steve Bruce as manager in November 2021. Under him, and under new owners, they finished 11th, and in his first full season, they finished fourth.

Newcastle fared well under Howe in season 2023-24, although having to play extra games in Europe led to squad injuries and fatigue. They finished bottom in a particularly tricky group which also contained AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain, although they did at least beat PSG 4-1 at home. On the other hand, they did to Sheffield United what they had done to their rivals Sheffield Wednesday back in the 1990s, beating them 8-0 away. They also reached the quarter finals of the League and FA Cups; the third round of the former featured a 3-0 away victory against hated rivals Sunderland.

Newcastle's nickname is the Magpies.
6. Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank came to Brentford from Brøndby in 2018, and is notable for being one of the very few football managers in the top league who had never played at a professional level. He was also the first manager in Brentford's history to take them into the Premier League, when they were promoted up from the Championship in 2021. By the 2023-24 season, Brentford had established themselves as a solid mid-table side, having previously finished 13th and 9th.

However, Brentford finished 16th in 2023-24. They had to do without goalkeeper David Raya, who they had loaned out to Arsenal (and who became their main goalkeeper the following season), as well as releasing multiple players. The squad also lost multiple players to injuries, including star player Ivan Toney, left-back Rico Henry and right-back Aaron Hickey; however, Yoane Wissa managed to fill the hole left by Toney, scoring a total of twelve goals. Despite the low finish, Frank stayed on at the club.

Brentford's nickname is the Bees.
7. Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag joined Manchester United in April 2022, following interim manager Ralf Rangnick. In his first full season, United finished third, and entered the 2023-2024 season without goalkeeper David de Gea or defender Phil Jones, making this United's first season without any players who had played under Sir Alex Ferguson (at least until the return of Jonny Evans in September 2023). United's fortunes were mixed; they finished eighth, their lowest position in the top division since the 1989-90 season, and were knocked out of the fourth round of the League Cup by Newcastle United, but beat rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final. United also finished bottom of their Champions' League group.

In the 2024-25 season, ten Hag was sacked in October following a string of poor results. Assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy temporarily took over as interim manager until Ruben Amorim joined United from Sporting Lisbon in November 2024.

8. Sean Dyche

Formerly with Burnley, Sean Dyche took over Everton in January 2023 following Frank Lampard's sacking. Everton narrowly avoided relegation in the 2022-23 by beating Bournemouth 1-0 on the final day of the season. In the following season, they made Premier League history for the wrong reasons when they were deducted ten points due to breaking profit and sustainability rules during the COVID pandemic. However, this points deduction was reduced to six following an appeal. Everton then had a further two points deducted for another breach of the rules. Despite this, they finished 15th (and would have finished 12th, were it not for the deduction).

Dyche continued with Everton into the 2024-25 season, but a mixture of poor results and unappealing defensive football left them sitting in 16th and Dyche was sacked in January 2025, with captain Seamus Coleman and coach Leighton Baines managing the team for their FA Cup game against Peterborough United. The club saw an uptake in their results, including a controversial 2-2 draw with Liverpool, when David Moyes returned as Dyche's replacement in (January 2025).

Everton's nickname is the Toffees.
9. Steve Cooper/Nuno Espirito Santo

Although Steve Cooper was greatly liked by fans, having gotten Nottingham Forest promoted to the Premier League after beating Huddersfield Town in the 2022 Championship play-off, 2023-24 was not a good season for him. He was replaced by Nuno Espírito Santo, formerly of Wolverhampton Wanderers, in December 2023 after Forest only won one game in thirteen and were sitting in 17th, where they also finished. Like Everton, they were deducted points for breaking Premier League sustainability rules due to their lavish spending habits, and their appeal was rejected.

Under Nuno, Forest won their Boxing Day game against Newcastle United 3-0 and beat Manchester United 2-1, their first victory against the club in 29 years. They finished on 32 points, six points above fellow stragglers Burnley, who they beat on the final day of the season. Of note, Forest experienced a remarkable turnaround the following season, 2024-25, being one of the few clubs to beat Liverpool at Anfield.

10. Roberto di Zerbi

Roberto di Zerbi joined Brighton & Hove Albion in the 2022-23 season, succeeding Graham Potter. His first game was a 3-3 draw away to Liverpool, with Leandro Trossard becoming the first Brighton player to score a hat trick. Under him, Brighton thrashed his predecessor's new club Chelsea 4-1 and earned their biggest victory in the Premier League when they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 6-0. Brighton also knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup.

Di Zerbi's second season in charge was less successful, not least due to Brighton losing multiple squad members to injury. Although Brighton had qualified for the Europa League, they were knocked out by Roma in the round of 16. They finished eleventh, but di Zerbi's contract was not renewed and he left by mutual consent at the end of the season. He went to Marseille the following season.

Brighton's nickname is the Seagulls.
