Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1949, Canada defeated Denmark in the World Hockey Championships by an incredible one-sided score? What was the final score in this preliminary game?

Answer: 47-0

Even though Canada won this preliminary game forty-seven over nada over the Denmark team and their other first round matchup seven - zip over Austria, they failed to win the Championship Final which was won by Czechoslovakia three to two over Canada. The loss left Canada with the silver medal, who was heavily favoured to win the gold.

The Czechs, who took the gold were considered surprise winners due to the tragedy only three months earlier when a plane went missing in the English Channel with six of their key players aboard.

It was only the third time the Canadians had ever lost a World Hockey Championship and only the second time Czechoslovakia had ever won a World Title. Canada was represented in 1949 by the Sudbury Wolves.
2. At the 2003 Rugby World Cup, this South African nation with Windhoek being its capital city, was obliterated by Australia to the tune of 142-0. Which African nation suffered this embarrassing defeat?

Answer: Namibia

The hint here is the losing country's capital city is Windhoek, meaning the country at the end of this Rugby whipping had to be Namibia. At the time the one hundred and forty-two to diddly squat shellacking taken by Namibia was considered one of the worst blowouts in sports history (it was 69-0 at half time).

The Namibian rugby team, nicknamed the Welwitschias or Biltongboere, have to be given credit for not walking off the field and finishing the game.
3. In the women's qualifying tournament for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, which of the following whitewash matchups secured a place in the Games for this particular European lady's ice hockey club?

Answer: 82-0 Slovakia - Bulgaria

Tunisia and Japan are not countries which are part of the European Pool. England is considered to be a part of Europe but Vatican City does not have any sports teams of any kind due to their neutrality, so that would leave Czechoslovakia, who annihilated the poor Bulgarian female hockey team 82-0.

The Bulgarian's starting goaltender was left in for the first seventy-seven goals, which were scored on 134 shots. Fifty-seven saves is usually an outstanding performance in any hockey game. For reasons which allude any hockey analyst, the Bulgarian coach changed goalies with one minute and twenty-five seconds left to play, and the Czechs scored five more times on their final five shots. Eighty-two goals gave the Slovak ladies an average of one tally every forty-four seconds. Ouch.
4. In the 1940 NFL Championship Game, in which the Chicago Bears and the Washington Redskins played for the title, what was the final score in this one-sided devestation?

Answer: 73-0 Chicago - Washington

Three weeks earlier, the Redskins defeated Chicago 7-3 and the Skins owner made the mistake of calling the Bears a bunch of quitters and crybabies. It was a mistake because the Bear's coach, George Halas, showed his team the headlines in which Washington's owner, George Preston Marshall, had openly insulted the Bears.

It obviously lit a fire under the team because Chicago took it to heart and totally creamed the Redskins seventy-three to zero in the Championship Game. The Bears led 28-0 at halftime and even after coach Halas pulled his starters, the backup players continued to pile it on.

Interesting stats from this one-way whipping included the game being the last one ever played with a player, Bear's end Dick Plasman, playing without a helmet, Chicago pulling in eight interceptions of which three were returned for touchdowns, and so many balls were being kicked into the stands that the refs asked the Bears to please run or pass the ball into the endzone for points after on their last two scores. I think calling the Bears "quitters and crybabies" is a faux pas the Washington coach likely carried with him for a long, long time.
5. Which horse, likely the most famous colt ever, won the 1973 Triple Crown, closing out the three race feat with a thirty-one length victory in the Belmont Stakes?

Answer: Secretariat

Secretariat won the Belmont by an amazing 31 lengths which is almost equal to one-sixteenth (1/16th) of a mile, which is 330 feet or 110 yards. In his short career, Secretariat ran twenty-one races, winning sixteen times, placing three times, and finishing third once.

He only failed to finish in the top three once, that being due to a disqualification. He died (euthanized) October 4th, 1989, aged 19 years, of an incurable hoof disease called lamminitis. The term "all heart" certainly applied to Secretariat as a post-mortem autopsy revealed that his heart was over two times larger than that of a normal horse.
6. My favourite team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, are known for being on the end of some serious drubbings, but on January 2, 1971, they smoked this team 13-0 leaving me one happy fan. Who was the team they wallopped that night by thirteen goals to none?

Answer: Detroit Red Wings

Shouldn't be too tough to pick out the loser here. Cleveland, Kansas City and Quebec didn't have NHL teams in 1971 so it was the Detroit Red Wings who suffered the humiliating defeat at the hands of Toronto. To be fair to Detroit, they hammered the New York Rangers 15-0 in January, 1944. I chose the 13-0 game as I'm a suffering Toronto Maple Leaf fan and remember watching the entire 13-0 game with a large smile on my face. :D
7. Eldrick "Tiger" Woods is known for many gold records and many PGA professional victories. The 1999 version of this PGA major was won by fan-favourite Payne Stewart by one stroke, who sadly died later that year in an aircraft accident. The next year, Tiger destroyed the field by 15 strokes in the 2000 affair of which PGA major tournament?

Answer: U.S. Open

Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open by an incredible 15 strokes, 12 under par (the first golfer to complete 72 holes at the U.S. Open at double-digits under par). Tiger opened the tournament with a 5 under par 66 giving him an opening round one-stroke lead over Miguel Angel Jiminez, then shot a two under par 69 in round two, opening his lead to six strokes over Jiminez and Thomas Bjorn. An even par 71 in the third round opened his lead to ten shots over South Africa's Ernie Els, leaving Woods as the only player under par at minus -8 while Els held second going into Sunday's final round at plus +2. An amazing five under par -5 in the closing round opened his victorious final score to twelve under par -12 as second place Els fired a one over par to leave him with the second place money and a final score of three over +3, making the finishing winning score a difference of fifteen strokes.
8. Boxing history is fraught with early and vicious knockouts. But this 1988 heavyweight fight seems to be the one that comes to mind when speaking of boxing's biggest blowouts. In this match, "Iron" Mike Tyson obliterated this previously undefeated pugilist via knockout in a grand total of ninety-one seconds. Who was it that Mike Tyson dismantled, devastated, and literally crushed in this heavyweight title bout on June 27th, 1988?

Answer: Michael Spinks

Even though boxing 'experts' predicted a fantastic fisticuffs exhibition of differing styles over several rounds, in the very first round of the heavyweight title fight between Mike Tyson and the undefeated Michael Spinks began, Michael Spinks lay prostate upon the ring canvas, out cold after a mere ninety-one seconds. Mike Tyson had annihilated Spinks so badly in such a short time that Spinks would never fight again.
9. This one goes back over a century, but for our esteemed British football fans, it is worth mentioning. In 1885, Arbroath football club pounded Bon Accord of Aberdeen to the tune of 36-0 in a Scottish Cup match. Not bad really considering Bon Accord got invited by mistake to the tournament thinking it was a test match in another sport altogether which they were much more adept at than British football. Which sport was Bon Accord known for being extremely adept at playing?

Answer: cricket

Give Bon Accord credit for deciding to play even after they found out it was a football tournament they had been invited to, when their skilled sport of choice was cricket. Knowing the ability of British football squads in their sport of choice, I think the score could have been much worse than 36-0 for Arbroath. I hope Bon Accord received some type of sportsmanship prize for even deciding to go ahead with what they obviously knew was going to be a one-sided affair for Arbroath.
10. An interesting soccer blowout occurred in 2002 when the team coach for Madagascar's Stade Olympique de l'Emyrne staged a protest that made sure his team would get pummelled by the opposing team, Adema. What instructions did he give his squad that had the game end purposefully in a total devestation of 149-0 for the opponents, Adema?

Answer: told his Madagascar squad to score at will into their own goal

Stade Olympique were playing their arch-rivals, AS Adema, also from Madagascar. This was protest by the coach of the Stade Olympique team, who ordered his team to score on themselves at will due to the coach's fury regarding the very minor-league like way that the referees had been calling their games.

As Adema never scored any of the 149 goals in the 149-0 wipeout, which is a record in a soccer game. The match passed the previous record for highest scoreline of 36-0, set in 1885, when Arbroath beat Bon Accord in a Scottish Cup match.
