Sports Legends Trivia Quiz

The term "Legend" is often applied too liberally. I think this quiz recognises true greatness and not just a flash in the pan. Hope you find it informative and a challenge. Good luck.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Four legends of Formula One. Three of them won the World Championship three times each. But which driver won the World Championship FOUR times?

Answer: Alain Prost

Piquet won in 81/83/87. Lauda won his three in 75/77/84 and Senna won the titles in 88/90/91. The latter's tragic death sadly robbed us of the spectacle of Senna locking horns with a young Schumacher, with Prost and Mansell on the grid to add to the fun and games.

Alain Prost won his titles in 85/86/89/93.
2. Which boxing legend was known as "the Manassa Mauler"?

Answer: Jack Dempsey

Born in Manassa, Colorado, Jack Dempsey was World Heavyweight Champion from 1919 to 1926, a time in which the popularity of boxing soared. He fought a total of 83 fights, winning 66, drawing 11 and losing just six.
3. Which of these sporting greats would use "the flipper"?

Answer: Shane Warne (cricket)

If you were batting and Shane Warne comes on to bowl at you, look out for his "flipper". If you miss it, you will hear the sound of rattling timber as the ball hits the stumps (you've been bowled out), and you will have to go back to he pavilion.

The "flipper" doesn't spin but skids through low and faster than his usual leg spinners.
4. Which horse won the Cheltenham Gold Cup (U.K.) for an incredible three consecutive years (2002-03-04)?

Answer: Best Mate

Best Mate's hat-trick of Gold Cup wins equalled the achievement set by Arkle back in the mid-1960s. To win the prestigious Gold Cup three times running was widely considered to be an incredible achievement, given the quality of the horses that were entered. Best Mate won 14 races, came 2nd in another 7 races, and died on course (at Exter) in his 22nd race.

The record number of consecutive victory's was set by Golden Miller, who won the race five times in the 1930's, although the race was considered less prestigious back then. (thanks to Wildginge (Funtrivia member) for the additional information).
5. What was the nickname of the cyclist who triumphed in the Tour de France for five consecutive years (1991-92-93-94-95)?

Answer: Big Mig

Miguel Indurain (Spain) rode for the Banesto team and dominated on of the toughest events in the world for five years. He had a huge physique which earned him the "Big Mig" nickname.
6. Mark Spitz won an unprecedented SEVEN swimming gold medals for the USA. At which Olympic Games did he achieve this feat?

Answer: Munich 1972

Spitz won four individual golds and three team relay golds. But his fame saw a diversion away from swimming and into the world of the "celebrity" and he never made it to Montreal four years later to defend his many titles.
7. After winning his fourth gold medal in four Olympic Games in the 1996 Atlanta event, British rower Steven Redgrave said on live television, "Anyone who sees me go anywhere near a boat again, ever, you've got my permission to shoot me." Four years later, where was Steven Redgrave?

Answer: In Sydney, winning his fifth consecutive rowing gold.

1984 Gold - coxed fours
1988 Gold - coxless pairs
1992 Gold - coxless pairs
1996 Gold - coxless pairs
2000 Gold - coxless four

And in 2004, he was a sprots commentator ... wondering if he'd have won a sixth gold.
8. 'The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they do not know the game". Which legendary football manager (soccer) uttered this perceptive comment?

Answer: Bill Shankly

It has been repeated many time since but Liverpool FC's legendary Scottish manager, "Shanks" said it first.
Bill Shankly (1913-1981).
9. Bjorn Borg won five consecutive Wimbledon men's singles titles 1976-77-78-79-80. Two American legends fought out the next 4 years but which answer below shows the correct order of winners for the years 1981-82-83-84?

Answer: McEnroe - Connors - McEnroe - McEnroe

Some would argue that this era was tennis at its finest. Competitors respected each other but didn't necessarily like each other. That made it compelling to watch.
10. The British Open Golf Championship was won 5 times during the 1970s and 1980s by which great of American golf?

Answer: Tom Watson

75/77/80/82/83 were Tom Watson's years of Open triumph. Jack Nicklaus won more tournaments but Tom Watson dominated the British Open.
